View Full Version : DIY sealing the hood.
so many asked so you had me out in the rain today. nissan part#66830-50Y00 this only comes with 11 clips the white one's in the picture i am sure you can order some more i used a total of 17 clips. the strip was a little long so i cut it down to 42'' after i had it attached. drill holes are 3/16'' i didnt really space the holes any special way just how i thought it would hold the best,i did one hole at a time and snapped it in place as i was going along. you will have to respace the clips make some new holes in the rubber, but is is pretty simple just dont make the holes to large it will stretch over the clips.

May I sugget that everyone use tape where you drill to avoid any blistering of the paint, just as a precaution. Good luck everyone, nice job indeed
i thought about tape but my drill went through that bumper like butter.

looks better and if you got a cone filter it keeps water from going in during rain and being sucked in to your airfilter.. with the air and everything...

what's that license plate holder thingy doing there?
the strip was cheap i dont remember i used to work at nissan, the extra black clips were off another seal i had laying around.
the license plate thing was something i made when i was bored.

Nice clean job... But, there are plenty other ways water gets under your hood. Are your going to seal those up to?
i have custom under panel i am just trying to figue out the lights.

Anyone know if they make white rubber strips like this?

Also, people could use this if they don't want to drill. It has 3M double sided tape to hold it in place...

It's actually truck tailgate seal and can be found for about $30 a roll (probably 2-3 Yaris hoods worth). The density feels about the same as the factory rubber seals around the doors. I keep a roll around as you can use this stuff for lots of things...

Wow, they actually make kits for this:

Not sure what "fender beadings" are, but they come in different colors:

Does this affect closing the hood? Do you have to use a bit of force? Are you able to reach the latch when you open the hood?

The Yaris is the first car I ever owned that didn't have a front hood seal.....another corner cut by toyota.
Anyway, sealing the front of the hood should keep the upper enginer bay a bit cleaner especially if you drive alot in inclement weather.
I have an idea about using something that will be a custom fit, will fill the gap and be real easy to to install.
I will keep Y'all posted about this.

Can't you also use garage door bottom seal?

I'd like to see what you come up with, but aren't the other posted methods in this thread already easy enough to do?
Here's another thread about sealing the hood:

There is always a better way.
Picked up a long strip of weather stripping, sealing stuff, whatever it's called at Advance Auto Parts today, cut it down and its working great. :)

Just a word to those who will listen:
Omitting the long story that goes with this knowledge:
Make sure you use a non-porous material. If it is any kind of spongy it will cause rust. :frown:

That looks really nice!
My idea did not work out and I definately want that.
I like to keep a clean engine bay and "sealing" the hood will help that.
I will order it as soon as Garm list it.

I'd be interested in one of those MicroImage kits also. I've only had the car a few weeks and it's already looking pretty nasty under there from rain and whatnot.

I'm having a hard time trying to find the sealing strip thread w/ the 3m adhesive back, and the vendor here who sells them.
Darn rocks keep chipping the leading edge of my hood & this mod should remedy that problem for me. Thanks.

Use door seals, they use the same type of clip. Trim it to lenght. Itll be super cheap at the scrap yard and take it off a echo or yaris, 2 doors would be best. The clips are mostly under the door trim. I think you will have enough lenght. If you cant find any other options, id try that.

You should be able to find some kind of generic hood seal to cut that has a sticky side to it. I purchased the one from micro image and that's all it was.....probably came on a spool and they just cut it as needed.
