View Full Version : Seat belt buzzer is silenced

I seen this thread on the before hack days. But don't see it now.
I was really annoyed by that stupid seat belt buzzer when I take off my seat belt. I wear it all the time, but pulling into my neighborhood, or parking lots, I would release my belt. Then came the Buzz from He&&. I went to my dealer to get my free oil change,( I get free oil changes for a year) and I asked my service guy if the mechanic can disable that darn thing. He said, sure not a problem. I left the dealer with my seat belt off, went up to 55 mph and no buzzer. Light still blinks, but silence.
I seen in the old discussion how someone went into the console and nuked the buzzer. Or how a dealer said it was not a changeable option. In the owner manual, it even says the buzzer can be disabled.
I am happy now, no buzz, buzz, and more buzz.
So if this is posted elsewhere, buzz me and move it.

Dude!
Please let me know how your dealer did this... Mine refuses to do so, on the grounds that disabling the buzzer might disable the whole airbag assy (stupid, I know).
Welcome to the forums!

The mechanic hooked up his laptop to the yaris, went thru the menu and disabled it. In the owners manual in the back, there is something about customizing the buzzer sound option. This will not disable the airbag or anything else. Your Dealer is pulling your leg.

Well, I know it can be disabled (some members have done it in the past), but those guys at my dealer don't seem to know which code to punch or something...
It would be awesome if you could figure out the steps involved (through your dealer) so that I can let those boneheads know.

From what I understand of the situation is that the seat belts have a pre tensioner in them to help stop whip lash. These pre tensioners are linked to the airbag control system. In the event of a crash the pre tensioner in the seat belt and the air bags deploy.

Great thread.
I hate the seatbelt alarm. My dealership won't shut it of. I've even contacted corporate about the manual and they said they changed their policy for US owners. I won't buy another car from that dealership or any dealership that won't do what I ask to my car. Safety my ass. There's no law requiring an alarm.

I just wear mine so have no issue with that sound.

Fyi, I could not stand the buzzer anymore so I decided to shut it up, heres how to do it easily. remove the snap in trim around the cluster and radio. unscrew the cluster, 2 screws, unplug the 2 harnesses attached to the cluster. when it's free turn it upside down and carefully remove the back cover, a couple screws and some plastic snaps hold it on. When you remove that cover you will see a small round black module (buzzer) with a hole in it, carefully pull or pry it up, it is plugged in to the board with two prongs, once it is removed replace the cover, reinstall the cluster and harnesses and enjoy the quiet. No adverse effects at all.

Except that you lose all alarm buzzes right? I sometimes leave my keys in the car or the lights on and bad things would happen if I lost that alarm altogether

I had the dealer do it after threating the salesman with a bad review. At first they said it couldn't be done but then I showed then a page from http://www.etimago.com/yaris/repairmanual/ Meter section page 11. There are 4Customize Parameters that can be changed using their intellegent tester. One of which is the seat belt buzzer. This helps when my old fat dog rides shotgun.

Is it totally silent, or does it buzz when you first start the car and drive off, then goes totally silent?

It beeps 5 times than is quiet. There is no noise if you take off while the car is running.

I wonder if I hook up the Code scanner from Autozone if it will allow me to change that setting myself? My Dealer refuses to disable it as well. A$$hats!

That would also disable the whole airbag assembly, since you would be disabling the seat pressure sensors. Not a good idea.

If I choose to disable my seat belt alarm, that should be my choice. I am a grown man and do not need an annoying reminder to fasten my seat belt. That is the problem with the auto industry; too many federal regulations that force them to put insane "safety" devices on American cars. Surely there is a simple solution to silencing this horrible beeping alarm. I should not have to dismantle my car and drill holes for a switch and cut wires to bypass the damn thing. The web is a vast knowledge universe.....isn't there someone out there who can chime in and offer the simple solution? When I drive around my acreage, I do not wear my seat belt, as I do not drive fast. I always wear it when on public roads. I should have the ability to turn off the beeper, permanently if desired.

I finally got rid of the beeping! My solution: Go to another dealership. First they were reluctant, but then I showed them a printed sheet of page 11 of the Meters section of the manual, and they finally accepted.
Looks like they don't have the code in their own manuals, but they tried it out and it worked. So my advice is to just tell them to try it out for themselves and see.

Great job! Armed with the proper information and a take no for an answer attitude a person can get the dealer to turn off the *&##@! alarm.

Since so many people tend not to put on their seat belts, they need buzzers and beeps. I put it on right away and the beep stops. Just buckle up immediately.

I drive way too much and just throw my things in the passenger's seat. I've always wanted to know if there was a way to disable the seat belt beeping! Once I get my car back, I'll be sure to have the dealer plug 'er in. Good to know it's possible! Thanks!

I just cant believe how some Dealers treat their customers. Some bend over backwards, others are the horses behind. I have a toyotas dealer 2 miles from my house, they are the horses behind, so I drive 45 minutes to the one I have been with for 20 years, and 5 vehicles.
If the service guy says no, tell him you want to talk to the service manager, if this fails, go above him to the general manager. It is a silly little buzzer, that annoys me to no end. I pull into my street, or into a parking lot, and off goes the belt. I want silence when I do this. My dealer did it, no hassle.
If All I do in life is pop my belt loose, then thats my crime, and I can do the time.
So go to the dealer, be nice, smile and say who is above you untill you reach the owner, or it is done.

Great Job Billk! If a dealer wants a long term relationship they should do this one simple thing.

i'm not so good in english so excuse me.what i did is just take out the sensor in the seatbelt lock near your seat.it uses a magneet to activate.so i just put a peace of magneet(the ones you get at a audio speaker)tape it on and viola,no beep and no lights any more.just make sure you put it at the right site, magneets has a site without the power.hope this will help you out.
I had to re-adjust my passenger seat mod today, got rid of the buzzer again. thing is so annoying when I have stuff in the passenger seat...

Sounds interesting... Although you need to be careful if that mod also disables the airbags!

the mod is not going to effect the airbag,it only telling the sensor that the seatbelt is fasten.while it is not.airbag's on off notification for passenger work normal.

To the people who got a dealer to do it, what if anything did they charge? I work in reverse logistics/e-commerce and ALWAYS have 25kg boxes riding shotgun setting off the alarm at random intervals (the people at the warehouse call me "small car" lol).
I would like to get it professionally disabled but am just wondering what it costs to get this taken care of... safely!

Hmm, I wonder if there's also a way to turn off the door-open alarm when the key is still in the ignition? I like to hang out sometimes with my radio on and the door open--but that's just plumb impossible with the ridiculous door-open alarm.

my last car (ford zx2) had this handy little thing where if i was driving with the seat belt off and it started buzzing i could push the release button (without the belt hooked up) and it would stop it from buzzing again until i turned the car off. it was pretty sweet while driving around campus at school. i have no idea if it was designed like that or someone did it (bought used... had quite a few thing done to it when i got it). i would do it to the Yaris... but my electrical knowledge is about as in depth as coloring with crayons. could be a pretty cool how to for some of you smart fellas out there.

Couldnt you get a replacement belt buckle from a wrecker and plug that end in if you wanted to cruise without your seatbelt? It wouldn't be the best looking mod but would work without doing anything electrical?

No. It is a parameter that is stored in FLASH memory in the cluster's ECU.

For anyone's info around me I just took my 08 yaris into country hills Toyota here in Calgary and the rep told me $50 to disable the speed sensor seatbelt option. I said forget it I will do it myself and he just smirked saying I needed techstream.... his jaw dropped when I said I could buy techstream on eBay with the cable for less than than $25 shipped so thanks but no thanks and I will even program my own key too with it for less than $20 (new transponder key $10 and cutting from a key cutter $4) I love sticking it to companies that wayyyy over charge.
