View Full Version : LEDs to replace interior lights: Which ones?

Ok, so I'd like to replace these lights with white LEDs:
- The ones up front above the rear view mirror (you push them to turn them on).
-
- The ones in the center of the roof that you can set off, on or on w/ the door.
-
- Thinking about replacing the LEDs in the three console knobs as well (AC recycle air / fresh air, AC temp., AC strength), but not sure how it would look with the all amber lighting Toyota has put in these '09 LBs.
-
- The light in the trunk / hatch area (driver side I think).
-
- The parking lights in the headlight housing.
-
- The rear license plate light.
-
I'd like to order from HiLEDs again: http://www.hileds.com/products.php
Which bulbs and sizes do I need from them to replace all of the above lights I've listed?
Are there better (quality / price wise) LEDs / companies than HiLEDs?
Also, my dealer drilled license plate holes into my front bumper even though I told them not to. They've offered to fill the holes and repaint the bumper, but lately I've been toying with the idea of putting white LEDs into those license plate holes and tying them into the parking lights.
To make it easy for everyone who might find this post useful, just quote this post and add the link to the specific bulb and list bulb's size and quantity needed next to each "-" under the corresponding light I've listed above. Thanks everyone!

I replaced all those lights you mentioned with white LEDs. The white color I use is a 6500K, which is a cool, bright white, with a very slight hint of purple. Also called Super White or Hyper White. No trace of blue.
To do the console control knobs I ordered 3x Super White Neo Wedge Based LED Bulbs (30% brighter) from www.autolumination.com Make sure you get Type B.
http://autolumination.com/74.htm

http://autolumination.com/74.htm
http://superlumination.com/images/auto_bulbs/74_3led_w_wm.jpg
For the map lights (next to the rear view mirror), I used a 194 replacement bulb from www.vleds.com. I ordered 2x V-LEDS HID WHITE 11 SMT LIGHT BULBS. These will also work for the parking lights and license plate (which I will order later, because I wanted to test the fit and color before I ordered more).

I cannot begin to tell you how great the bulbs are from VLEDS!!! The customer service is good. The quality of their bulbs is amazing, price is affordable, and output is so bright. Most importantly, each of the VLED bulbs are the exact same color, so your interior will match perfectly. The accessories for the VLED blulbs (the wiring and festoon blanks) are all interchangeable.
I will take pictures of my interior lighting modifications.

I also soldered LEDs into the driver side door window switch, and the center door lock switch near the parking brake. I forgot which LED bulbs I used for those (I can check into that if you are interested).
No more GREEN for me!!!

Rear is a 36mm festoon. I crammed a 42mm festoon in there, and it holds my 30LED light board in there perfectly.

No, that festoon-dummy is a 31mm. If you went with the 48 LED for your cabin too, that kit comes with a 31mm and a 42mm, which you could then mix and match interchangeably.

Marty, just to make sure everything is correct I'd get these for the map lights (the ones next to the rear view mirror that you push to turn on or off), the parking lights that are in the headlight housing, and the license plate light for total 5 bulbs (3 sets):
http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/4835704/
Then I get one of these for the cabin light (the one with the switch for on / off / door):
http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/5217649/
Finally, one of these for the trunk / interior hatch area:
http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/5168718/
OR these
http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/5217649/
Did I get all of that right?

Sure. I'll wait for you to come over so you can install them for me.
By the way, were you able to find out if there is a new part number / new version of the TYC tail lights for the 5-door LBs? Also, will the mudguards for the '07 / '08 LBs fit the 5-door LBs?
You do work at a Toyota dealer right?

WOW you were able to get a 48 M-SMT LED board in the dome light area?? Man I should of went with that instead. Thought it was going to be too big so went with a 30 M-SMT instead. But I guess I can put that in my hatch area and get a 48 M-SMT for the dome
Can't image how bright the 48 M-SMT is because the 30 M-SMT is already super BRIGHT!
I can vouch for VLEDs as well. I also have the 11 SMT 194 bulb for the parking, map and license plate lights and they are really bright. Excellent quality and affordable price.
JUST DON'T GET THEIR CHEAPER LED LIGHTS, THEY SUCK. Had to replace all my cheaper LEDs because the light output on them was pretty dim. Pay the money to get the SMT bulbs. They are worth every penny!

Thanks for all the input guys. I've ordered the 48-LED light for both the cabin light and the interior trunk / hatch light. I'm going to see if I can shove one of these 48-LED boards into that hatch light area.
Still looking for bright, white LEDs that will fit into standard license plate holes in the front bumper. I need to find some that are water-proof.

All you need is 2 x T10 with the LED's of your choice as the number plate light
is weather proof .
I am already running 2 T10's with 4 Flux LED's on each. works and looks great,

I'm not talking about the light for the rear plate in that post. My dealer drlled holes for the front plates even though I told them not to. Now I have two holes on my front bumper. The holes are thr standard size for license plate screws here in the US. I want to put a white LED in each hole and wire them to the paking lights.

Been googling screw sizes for license plates and it looks like American cars use 1/4" screws and I've been seeing 6mm and 6.3mm for Japanese (Toyota, Nissan, etc.) cars.

Guys, the 48 LED board will NOT fit into the trunk area!!! Check my orignal post.
There is only 2cm x 4.5 cm worth of space. I cut a cardboard template of each light board before I ordered, based on the specs supplied form VLEDS. The 30 LED board is rectangular and will fit the trunk light housing. The 48LED is square and impossible to fit. The 48 LED board fits perfectly into the cabin light area, which has excess space to spare with a 7.5cm x 4.5 cm housing (approximately).

Some late night photography! Sorry for my crappy night pics... no tripod. Picures can only show so much. These lights really brighten up the cabin. I can actually see the floor and back seat area, with no shadows or ugly yellow. The white color is consistent with amongst all VLED lights, for all cabin, map, and trunk lighting.
Interior map (2 x 11 LED 194 bulbs) and cabin (1 x 48 LED board)...

Yes, the 48 LED board fits into the DOME light (that is the one that goes off and on with the door opening). Naturally the board doesn't fit into the bracket where the festoon was. You have to run the dummy-festoon and wiring to the power clips, then mount the LED board somewhere in the plastic housing of the dome light.

For both, you will need a very small flat head screw driver.
The map light covers can be removed by placing the screw driver in the center gap, in between the pair. Then press towards the outside, away from the centre. Each of the covers are on 2 small pop-off hinges, located at each corner nearest the center. It might help if you move the screw driver towards one of the hinges, while keeping it in the center gap, then apply the pressure towards the outside, as mentioned.
The trunk light is held on by a plastic clip, under the grey plastic of the interior. Itcan be popped off by inserting the screw driver on the front edge of the light housing and lifting upward and out.

If you're careful, it shouldn't scratch. Good idea about the credit card, but I am not sure how much leverage you can get from that. Plus, I am not sure the credit card is a Genuine Toyota Approved technique (inside joke!).

If you get the bulbs I mentioned on Page 1, then the light is dispersed and even brigher than stock.
