View Full Version : What's your opinion on Exhaust Tips?

I was wondering what your guy's opinions were about different styles of exhaust tips. Dual tip? or single? I don't have the money for a full-on exhaust system, but the exhaust tips add a nice look to the car. I was just trying to see what kinds would look good on my 08 LB (I know it is personal preference, but maybe I can get some ideas from seeing yours). Post pics if you got em! Thanks!

If you don't want to spend much on a full exhaust system, then the tips are good alternatives. They look nice and don't make farting noises.
Just a quick question though. Are these exhaust tips "universal"? I've seen a couple of decent looking ones at places like PepBoys, AutoZone and Checker's Auto parts, but wasn't sure if they'd fit over the twig-like exhaust pipe on the Yaris.

I agree on the "farting noises" :bellyroll:
I'm not sure if they are universal or not, that is why I want to see what other people did.

I got the toyota one and it mounted with a stainless steel hose clamp. I would say "most" are universal. The Yaris has a small stock tailpipe.

I've also seen people advise that you drill a hole on the underside of the tip so that water doesn't pool up inside it and cause it to rust / corrode. The universal ones at those local auto stores are pretty cheap compared to the Toyota branded tip and they look decent enough.
Anyone know if these exhaust tips really are universal (ie. just slide and bolt on)?

most are universal as Bob stated, they come with an adjustable semi-circular clamp that is inside of the tip

while it sounds good in theory, drilling a hole in machined metal will create another impurity for oxidation/rust to occur. if it's stainless steel, you shouldn't have to worry about rust for a long time.

Remember that there is significant heat there even at the tip so water should be "cooked" away.
Do not get a tip that uses set screws at 3 or 4 points..... they do not last as long as a hose clamp

I have the genuine Toyota one for the Yaris hatchback. Its actually made by Borla. It is oval shaped with an angular cut, that matches the slope of the rear bumper. It clamps with a stainless steel hose clamp, no drilling, or screws to puncture the tail pipe. Makes the back end look a bit like a Mini Cooper.

It was regularly $90, but I got a discount and paid $70. Still pricey though. Its really good quality.

I can post a pic of it on the car if you like. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. My wife, who doesn't notice any of the things I do to pimp my Yaris, noticed the exhaust tip right away and said it looks great.

That's a good question. The Toyota tail pipe is less than $100USD. I bet it woild cost much more to get a shop to do that.

The exhaust tip cost me $99.00 NZ (about $64.00US)
and the pipe work, connecting to the orginal toyota muffler cost me $90.00NZ
(about $61.00US), that's the total cost ($125.00US)

There used to be a good thread on tips, and this was considered one of the favourites:
You can actually get it at Walmart for about $10. It's all stainless steel, resonated, and super easy to install. It fits the YarisHB perfectly without any modification, and it stays in place securely. I've had one on my car for more than 2 years.

I went the same route...WalMart! Not only is it cheaper (by a great deal), but it looks just as good as the Toyota one. I don't like the ones that have hose clamps or screws in them, this one has clamps inside the tip that grasp the tailpipe. It is a much better fit and looks just as good as the one from the dealer!

My exhaust tip is one from Toyota (Belgium). It's made specially for diesel because the pipe is pointing down a bit and this way it's pointing straight backwards. (I don't like pipes pointing down)

I'm a "less is more" person when it comes to tailpipes. I like my Thunder muffler's tail pipe, but I dual center exits, so long as they're not too big.

Those are bolts for the bracket that holds it to the pipe. I was talking about the cheap ones with one or two screws that hold it to the pipe...

The Yaris's muffler is big and bulbous which makes it very noticeable. I know this goes beyond just exhaust tips, but what would be needed to replace the big, bulbous muffler with something sleeker and less noticeable?

You need to clean the muffler first. Then, use heat paint specifically designed for that purpose. Your local auto parts store should have it, and I believe I saw some in Home Depot the other day.
The tip available at Walmart doesn't look like some cheapy crap. It's stainless steel and resonated, and actually looks very good!

Is there a DIY for removing the muffler?
1NZYaris1
11-02-2008, 06:15 PM
theres no need to remove muffler, but if you want to it is only a matter of undoing ,
the bolts with springs on them , (the ones above the axle).
as for paint just tell them you are painting excaust tail,
hope this helps .

Is this heat paint a spray paint? So it's safe to just spray paint the muffler w/o removing it?

Remove the muffler don't half ass it (it takes like 5 minutes) Just get spray paint with ceramic in it. Go to any auto parts store and find black spray paint designed for engine blocks or brake calipers. Either will work fine.

Stopped by Wal-Mart and saw this $12 tip you guys mentioned. Looked pretty good, but it was too big, long and kinda heavy for my taste.
So, I went to Pep Boys and found another tip by the same company (Pilot Motorsports). The Wal-Mart tip is around 8.5" long and has a round, slanted tip. The one I got from Pep Boys is only 7" long and has a square, slanted tip. This tip cost around $27 though.

I have installed it already, but it was dark after I installed it so I'll post pics. of it installed later today when the sun is up. The slanted tip follows the rear bumper's curve nicely. I like this tip much better than that Valor / Toyota brand tip I got from my dealer for my '07 LB.

The Walmart tips are also by Pilot Motorsports. At 8 1/2", the round slanted tip is certainly not too long. Fit it tightly up against the muffler bracket and tighten. It will sit under the edge of the bumper by almost 2".
