Can't help but feel sorry for the man too.....
He is in one of the toughest economic periods of US history. We're on the brink of a recession. Inflation is almost guaranteed because of continuous Fed liquidity increases since 2001, and huge increases this fall.
Obama has committed the US to implementing the Kyoto treaty. He promises to be 'tougher' than anyone else. At the very same time he is promising to end Outsourcing of manufacturing jobs to areas of the world which are not under Kyoto restrictions. Businesses instead will go bankrupt or find loopholes to permit outsourcing.
Obama has promised a middle class tax cut. He has promised to fully fund an aggressive expansion of AmeriCorps. He will do these things during a recession and inflation?
While initially campaigning as a "peace candidate" Obama has since committed to increasing troop deployments in Afghanistan. He has also promised to aid Israel if it is attacked. Where he will find the money for these things I do not know.
I call Obama Jimmy Carter with a tan. That may sound mean but it's not far from the truth. I expect him to serve for one term, and to end up defeated and disillusioned like Mr. Carter.
Enjoy your celebrations. Me, I voted for Bob Barr and did not have a dog in this hunt. Still, it's gonna be an exciting two years until the 2010 elections.

Geneas usual, well put Gene, continue to keep your chin up
I can see the LP coming out stronger after a botched liberal controlled government. After carter dropped the ball Reagan picked it up proclaimed "government is not the solution to the problem, government is the problem" a theory many of us still hold dear. Perhaps the gov't getting bigger, then not delivering on the promise of hope/change quite the way the Obama supporters have hoped for, then getting knocked down a few rungs will get more people to discover this.

I'm serious, I like to look at the ignorant side of the U.s voter who decides to waste their vote and not vote for either of the two "domineering" parties....
I also voted for Barr, I knew very well that my vote didn't matter, not because I was voting 3rd party, but because I live in Illinois, Obama's home state that has a long history of voting dem (thanks Chicago)
if you determine that I wasted my vote because I felt the candidate that I supported was the best fit to pass my beliefs as to how the country should be run, I ask you why? just because I know my guy isn't going to win this election I should just stay home? or should I join the crowd and vote for who I think will win? maybe I should pick the lesser of two evils? perhaps the better looking candidate should get my vote?
the only vote that was thrown away is the ballot that was not cast
something tells me that "the ignorant side of the U.s voter" did what they did for a reason, not just a hollow campaign promise and a good marketing scheme.

Cynicism is what happens after despair is over. I'm more amused than despairing. I've just watched a presumably decent man making promises he can't keep to people who don't understand the situation get a job he's not quite ready to do.
I've been through this shit before, in 1976. I remember how Jimmy Earl, all folksy like, was going to "heal America". In 1975 it was "Jimmy who?" and by 1985 it was "Jimmy who?"
By the time Carter was out of office we had twenty percent plus interest rates, a roller coaster stock market, gasoline lines (which are clearly a manifestation of price controls), and a paranoid Right that was on the verge of a Sagebrush rebellion over Carter's use of the ATF to strictly enforce paperwork violations under the GCA of 1968.
We also had Soviet supported rebellions in Africa and latin America and a full blown invasion in Afghanistan (which we started under Carter).
We didn't have Kyoto nor the Department of Homeland Security to contend with, nor the kind of intrusive data mining technology we got today.
Enjoy the circus, Malaya. Your man ain't ready for this shit and even if he is, you ain't. You'll realize it the first time you're in a gasoline line.

Even if the LP doesn't cut it, the ideas might work well. Many recent Nobel Prizes in Economics were awarded to Economics who were sympathetic to Libertarian ideas. Especially Hayek.
Liberals aren't into business and generating wealth. They're into controlling shit. As a consequence they're already behind the eight ball for the next two years. They cannot blame Bush while slapping on regulations, Card Check and Global Warming bullshit that kill jobs, on top of a recession and heavy inflation.
I'm glad that someone from Chicago is voting Libertarian. Considering that your town hosts one of the best Economics Schools in the World one would think that Libertarianism is a acceptable to some there.

I've never watched an election so closely before. I'm glad that he won. I'm sorry, but the Replublicans put us into the mess we're in now along with their not so fearless leader, Bush.
I'm looking foward and hope that Barack does in fact stay true to what he has proposed.

Congrats to the new President of the US.
Remember each and everyone of us will be watching you. The ones who are not starstruck will do so with clear sight. I hope and pray that you are the type of President who will "get things done" without harming the US.
To those of you that are celebrating- There is nothing to celebrate now- the road is ahead of you, the path laid out. Navigate the way then celebrate.

Something Gene said caught my attention. Why does the U.S. have to keep supporting Israel? I never understood why it's a such a big deal to most Republicans to support them.
It seems like they are just as crazy as the Palestinians. I say let those crazy people sort there own mess out. Just my two cents.
Obama is better than the alternative considering the Libertarian party has a way to go before they are taken seriously.

I think that the current administration and most of the house and senate are traitors and should be tried as such. This is because when they take office they swear an oath:
House
"I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."
Senate
Same
Presidency
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Note that these oaths do not state anything about undercutting, violating, or otherwise ignoring/harming the bits of the constitution with which they do not agree.
Obama will get my support if he begins acting like a real president. Using his veto power when anything in violation of the constitution goes across his desk. He (and the house/senate) needs to realize that the federal government is a special purpose government created to perform only a few, very limited (in scope, not necessarily magnitude) tasks, and that they cannot simply ignore that charter, without violating the oath that they swear upon taking office.
The president is the chief executive, it is his charge to execute the laws of the United States FAITHFULLY, that means, NOT enforcing laws which are in violation of the constitution just as much as actively enforcing the laws which are constitutionally sound. Many laws made by congress overstep the bounds of the constitution, and they are void. United States v. Lopez 514 U.S. 549.
This man has an incredible opportunity, a president with a true mandate from the people. I hope he uses it well.
In closing
"Well I didn't vote for him, but he's my President now and I hope he does a good job."
-John Wayne, upon learning that Kennedy had defeated Nixon.

In the movies, John Wayne was a hero. In real life, he was an alcoholic, a womanizer, and an abusive father. Who really cares what John Wayne said or thought? He really was profoundly uninteresting.

Regardless of who you guys voted for, I feel like I should commend each and every one who voted. I followed the election and didn't read about too many voting problems and almost no riots. Considering that this has been the biggest US voter turnout in history, I would say your government did a good job this time around!
I sincerely hope that the US gets a better reputation internationally with Obama in power. Judging from what I've read from people in different countries, he's already on the right track.

I am so proud of my country today, but what Obama said in his speech last night has resonated. This was step one on a long road, and to everyone who avidly supported and/or volunteered for Obama... our work isn't finished. It is time to step up and do something. Serve your communities. Enter the military. Do something to legitimize this enormous movement we have created from the ground up.

Voting for someone that doesn't have a chance doesn't mean you threw your vote away, It shows your idea of a who a good president would be. You don't vote for someone based on if they will win or lose. z.B. "I will vote for Obama/McCain because I think he will win."

You're going to have to be more specific here, Malaya. If you're referring to the Aquino overthrow of Marcos please give credit to a US which refused to support their favorite bastard in the Phillipines.
Are you saying that you, personally, participated in the Aquino revolt, and if so, how does this compared to a simple election?
Incidentally, I was peripherally involved with the Contras in the 1980s, still regret it to this day and it's one reason that I despise Reagan and Bush. They and we were used.
been in much worst situation than this, this is going to be a walk in a park for me.
what's great about history is that, you learn from it!
Patterns repeat, but they're only patterns. Think about it.
You haven't overthrown a dictator here. You participated in an election. You haven't changed the System either.
If anything McCain's defeat ends the rule of Neo-Cons. The remaining GOPers in the Congress are more Conservative, including my own Rep.
i'm more ready than you will ever be gene, experience and time are on my side...keep your head up and never despair old champ!
I'm not worried at all, save the possibility of some irritation from someone calling the Police to report me for illegal guns - I don't own any but such abuse happens from time to time.
Then there is Card Check. I don't like to think about that one, it enrages me to the point of violence. I cannot imagine why Unions insist upon this one, it's suicidal for them in the long term. They must know that they're going to lose because Card Check is a dirty trick.
Aside that, I work for a living, don't use drugs and keep to myself.
I pity the people of Color who are expecting so much from Obama. He's not going to deliver it. He can't, and that's my point.

Last night was the culmination of a hard-fought long campaign for both sides. This election was one for the books, more people voted, more people donated, volunteered, turned out for rallies, wrote their congressmen/women and most of all I think we should be proud that the system worked... none of the popular vote but not electoral BS, I know its the system we determined but this time there is no mistaking who won. Polls closed, votes were counted, and I'm exhausted. My day didn't end at all close to early and somehow I still managed to make it to my 8:30 class without sleeping through it!
My county was overwhelmingly red 55,597 for McCain and 23,603 for Obama. We fought for each and every Obama vote and despite the nasty things people do locally to Obama supporters and yard signs, I can honestly say we (Bay Democrats) ran a clean race and did the best we could.
Looking forward to the next four years, as a Democrat and only being 22 my entire involvement with the executive branch has been in opposition... just an odd perspective from now, but certainly welcome!

In the movies, John Wayne was a hero. In real life, he was an alcoholic, a womanizer, and an abusive father. Who really cares what John Wayne said or thought? He really was profoundly uninteresting.
I was indicating that that was my sentiment. Not that the speaker was some great person. I simply believe in citing sources.

ok, while not all black Americans or other races voted for Obama simply because he's black A LOT did...they were all over the news....the vindication for slavery, etc...I really don't care that Obama is the president, anybody who got this term is going to have a very TOUGH road...but I think even Martin Luther King himself would have been disappointed...for it was he who wanted to be judged by the content of his character and not the color of his skin....and I'm quite sure he meant that whether he was being judged badly or favorably..just because of his skin color.
This statement is so stupid, racist, & insulting, I almost feel embarrased for her. This gal is hopelessly & utterly clueless. Where is she getting her "statistics"? Did a lot of white people vote for McCain simply because he is white?
Millions of white people cast their ballot for Barack Obama, (college educated whites voted far more for O than whites who are not college educated) as did millions of blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc. etc. I think people wisely voted for Barack Obama for several reasons, including his character. He's a brilliant man, and he ran a PHENOMENAL, masterful campaign, always staying on point, never wavering from his message. He was unflappable. Obama's message for change deeply resonated with people, after 8 years of the worst administration in our history. After 8 years of Bush, and the country being in a financial meltdown, were we to expect that logically the best choice would have been to elect yet another Republikkkan...one who voted with the current administration over 90% of the time?? I certainly don't think so, and obviously neither did the American people.
McCain floundered badly. He WAS George W. Bush, & no matter how hard he tried to distance himself from that train wreck, he simply couldn't. A 90% voting record with the Bush administration is not something a candidate in 2008 wants to highlight...it's a fact he ran from in shame. McCain thought Palin would be the perfect ingredient in getting him elected, and it looked like it was working at the beginning...until she opened her mouth. Then, we all realized he'd picked a know-nothing...an arrogant know-nothing at that. She did well on the campaign trail, and energized her crowd, but on the rare times the McCain people allowed her to be interviewed--to be herself, not reading from a campaign speech--she flubbed badly, and it was obvious that she was in no way ready to be Vice-President of the United States. While McCain kept changing message, he tried to create a new "non-troversy" (my word...a 'controversy which is made up, and meaningless') each week, hoping to get American's outraged & angry enough to vote against Obama. Nothing stuck because American's had seen this before, and weren't buying it this time, thankfully. If anything, they were angry & outraged at Bush/Cheney/McCain.
Obama won because he's a smarter man, and was a better choice and a better candidate. He represents hope for our future. McCain represented the failed policies of the past.
Barack Obama's meteoric and historic rise from obscurity to the Presidency is nothing short of a phenomenon, rarely--if ever--seen in politics. Barack Obama's journey is the living embodiment of Dr. King's 'I Have A Dream' speech, and if Dr. King could possibly see what has happened, he surely would be beaming.
Barack Obama is a transformational figure, a man destined to lead. He was--by far--the better choice for this country at this time. That's why he won.

bobby you can apologize for your remarks. Sipngas was posting exactly what the news reported earlier.
Breakdown of demographics reveals how black voters swept Obama into White House
Yesterday, 140 million Americans - a staggering 65% of the registered electorate - cast their votes to make Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States of America. Here we show how the results break down...
Black Americans
95% of black voters went to the ballot for Obama and only 4% for McCain.
Obama has succeeded in mobilising African-American voters who, although strongly Democratic, have in the past been apathetic in turning out to vote.
Yesterday's surge in black voters, however, only boosted black turnout by two percentage points from 11% to 13%.
As in previous years, more black women turned out than men.
Whites
55% of white votes went to McCain including the notoriously hard-to-win white working class vote, but Obama stunned many by taking an impressive 43% of total white votes, cutting the Republican lead compared with 2004.
Hispanics
66% of Hispanic voters turned out for Obama - the best ever result for a Democrat.
McCain only took 31% of the Hispanic vote, despite courting them heavily in his campaign.
Obama used techniques such as Spanish-language adverts to win the Hispanic voters over, many of whom had grown disgruntled with the Bush administration.
Women
56% of the female vote went to Obama, exceeding the usual Democrat advantage.
Many consider that Obama's appeal to women has been key to his electoral victory, while McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate, failed to help him secure the support of America's women.
It should be noted that while Obama won the female vote overall, he lost the battle over white women by 7 points.
Men
The male vote was essentially tied with 49% voting for Obama, thus evening the score on the male-heavy Republican advantage in 2004.
41% of white males voted for Obama, making him the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter to take more than 38% in this category.
Under- 30's
66% of under-30's showed their support for Obama - far higher than in any previous election - compared to 31% for McCain.
A staggering 54% of young white voters also went for Obama.
Overall, this also helped Obama secure a high number of first time voters; 71% of whom voted Democrat.
McCain only managed to secure 29% of first-time voters, compared to 53% for John Kerry in 2004.
Obama's youth - at 47 he is one of the youngest ever presidents - appealed to and energised many of those who were voting for the first time.
Catholics
Nearly 25 per cent of U.S. adults - about 30 million - are Catholic and 54 per cent of them voted for pro-abortion Obama as opposed to 46 per cent for McCain.
Observers say the economy became the key issue for many Catholic Americans, which, along with issues such as the Iraq War and health care, eclipsed abortion.
Extras:
Asians
63% of Asian voters went to the ballot for Obama and 34% for McCain.
Jews
78% of the Jewish vote went to Obama. Jewish support - which made up 2% of the overall electorate - has, in recent years, been overwhelmingly Democrat; with Al Gore receiving 79% in 2000 and John Kerry 74% in 2004.
Suburban/Rural voters
Were split 50-50. A key area in Bush's victory four years ago, suburban voters make up half of the total American electorate. McCain also lost ground on rural voters, with the votes split 51-47 in his favour.
Single voters
Obama won this category by a landslide, with 66% of single voters going to the ballot for him, compared to only 32% for McCain.
Married voters
51% of married voters supported McCain and 47% voted for Obama. This was a drop from 2004 for McCain compared with Bush's 15 point lead in 2004.
Senior Citizens
51% of over- 65's voted for McCain - including veterans - and made up 16% of the entire electorate. They were therefore not dissimilar in influence to the under- 30's on the overall result.
High earners
53% of voters who earned $200,000 or more in 2007 voted for Obama.
McCain - who was expected to triumph amongst the wealthy, succeeded in polling only 45% of these voters.
73% of white evangelicals backed McCain and 25% backed Obama.
This was a boost of 4 points for the Democrats from 2004, who traditionally struggle in rural areas, where many of this category live.
84% of Democrats who intially voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries voted for Obamas.

This is what I found most interesting...Chris Matthews or Chuck Todd (political analyst for NBC News) stated this last night... to the Obama Campaign..
"Great!, you won, but then again (pause)...you won.." So much said in so few words
He has a long road ahead of him....I am a Republican Obama supporter. I voted this way because I felt my party let me down.... the McCain Campaign would have had a good ticket, had they picked someone other than Sarah Palin. If it were a McCain/Romney ticket, or a McCain Giuliani ticket, they would have secured my vote. However, the camp made a hasty decision trying to swing the "let down" Hillary Clinton supporters.... But there in is the problem, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin are too far across the aisle to even be comparable, be it their Pro Life/ Pro Choice issue differences or the simple fact that Palin has nowhere near the executive experience that Hillary has, or their Foreign Policy experience. I won't ramble any further, I'll just say that the Obama/Biden ticket was the better choice on ALL of the issues.
I am open to criticism....I can take it, I am a big boy lol

I also voted for Barr, I knew very well that my vote didn't matter, not because I was voting 3rd party, but because I live in Illinois, Obama's home state that has a long history of voting dem (thanks Chicago)
if you determine that I wasted my vote because I felt the candidate that I supported was the best fit to pass my beliefs as to how the country should be run, I ask you why? just because I know my guy isn't going to win this election I should just stay home? or should I join the crowd and vote for who I think will win? maybe I should pick the lesser of two evils? perhaps the better looking candidate should get my vote?
the only vote that was thrown away is the ballot that was not cast
something tells me that "the ignorant side of the U.s voter" did what they did for a reason, not just a hollow campaign promise and a good marketing scheme.
we go into the election as a herd of cattle the popular vote is not what decides the election (as seen in Al Gore's case) so I stand by my decision to call voting for anything but the two majority parties a wasted vote UNLESS:
DISCLAIMER!!!!
The non majority party (libertarian/green whatever) is in a position where they will garner a significant amount of the vote /have a chance of actually winning....

Wowo........you guys know the world owes no one nothing......we as individuals only gain or lose based on our own hard effort. To think a President in America has the power to take away anything is foolish.
We gained a great leader last night.Either candidate could make a great leader in fact.
another fact.....Bush had the entire United states behind him after 9/11.......and most of the world......and yet he made so many bad decisions that he will be known in the future as one of the worst presidents ever.......when he should of been known as the Greatest President in history......
I look forward to our new President.....a breath of fresh air......I watched and read about him and everything for over 18 months and his statement has not changed. He is a good man and a good leader. He has good ideas.I do not agree with all of them......but honestly I do not agree with every idea I have in my own head.
As a country we need to stand up and stand behind our new leader. We need to work hard to make our lives as good as possible. We need to change the view of the world of us by showing them we are good people and we can at least behave among ourselves and solve problems.
What a neat opertunity we all have in America now.......a chance to move forward.......hmmmmm .....divided we fall........enough said.

I have never EVER felt so proud to be an American as I was on election night. After 8 loooong years of the very worst administration in the history of this country, it feels like a huge weight has been lifted, and the nightmare is coming to an end. (Is it 1/20/09 yet?!) The whole world is celebrating! Imagine, we're going to have a brilliant President, one who is articulate, and able to speak English properly!
I frequently travel to Europe, Asia, and South America. No longer do I have to feel embarrased about my President, or have to explain—forcefully—that I didn't vote for Bush, and many many Americans did not either. I am so proud to call Barack Obama my President, and so proud of this country right now.
My hat's off to you, President-elect Obama! You ran an amazing amazing campaign. You did not stumble, you did not waver, you stayed on message. Your ascent to the Presidency is nothing short of astounding, and you have the respect of the nation. You have a huge Katrina-like mess to clean up. We wish you only the best for a successful Presidency, and we hope for the best for this country.

Gee, that's pretty sick alright ("sick" in the dictionary meaning), about 75 years behind the times...
This has been a fascinating thread: I wondered what would happen here. As a Canadian, the US election affected us a lot, along with many other countries, most of which were hoping, even praying, for Obama. The last ...person... was an incredible failure as a leader: look where he led the US, and because of his policies, the rest of the world!
I figure that if the US can get out of the habit of starting wars, your country's deficit could disappear in a short time. Can Obama vanquish the Hawks in the US? We'll see...
The one stat that struck me was regarding Obama's speech in Chicago: 200,000 people, and the cops reported on 9 (nine) incidents. In a crowd that size? In Chicago?? Yes, folks, times are truly changing.

My turn.....For anyone who has been in the military as I was.... we swore to defend the United States against all ememies foreign and dosmestic..... follow the orders of the people appointed above us and the President of the US..... When I started out in the Army Nixon was still sitting in the White House....... I survived through many presidents including Clinton. It changed nothing in the daily lives of a soldier. It taught us a good way of life.......
I think Obama is smart and will surround himself with smart people. I refuse to pre-judge how things will come out...... I can only hope.
TLyttle.... the USA is not in the habit of starting wars..... we are just strong enough to step in when needed and not just stand by and watch. Not many people will try to stop a fight.

All of the nonsense that is being thrown about in the last two days doesn't serve anyone well. All of the doomsday prognosticating and the "get ready for this" or "this should be interesting" type comments only betray the arrogance of voters who have refused to acknowledge that they are:
a) not in the majority
b) mostly not expert political analysts
I'm not saying "you lost, get over it" but I am saying that we all have an obligation to put aside the negative spirit of this campaign season and do our part to help America get back on track. They absolutely do. I think for many Republikkkan's a leader who is bright, articulate, well-educated, & a critical-thinker is seen as 'elitist', whatever that really means. They see intelligence as a negative, deserving of scorn & derision. They mock brilliant leaders, and treat them with disdain.
Republikkkan's are happiest when their leader is intellectually limited, and speaks like an inarticulate cowboy. They love his 'it's our (the United States) way or the highway' attitude, and feel that this stance has been extremely productive in our global relationships.

bush and his neocon posse took your country in such a radical direction, so yes, things will inevitably be different.
i dont' disagree that our countries' governments serve the corporate interests first,
but obama as leader will not be concocting a web of lies to start wars to line the coffers of the bechtels, the carlyle groups and the halliburtons.
will he live up to every promise?...highly doubtful,
but no doubt his government will take things in a very different direction.

Palin was particularly perfect for the Republikkkan's...she knew nothing.
Here's Palin's answer to which Supreme Court decision--other than Roe v. Wade--she disagreed with: :iono:
But she was cute, you betcha! <giggle>

Lots of people hope so, the current direction leads to catastrophe. I recently heard an internationally-known economist predict that, unless the US changes direction, and soon, it could become a 3rd-world nation by 2020. Now, THERE'S a thought for you!
And on another site, someone posted a picture of a smiling, very smug-looking Bush with the caption, "So Long, Suckers"...

I've got a great idea, empty out the prison population.
Push them out of a plane over iran with an ak.
The national debt could be wiped out in a number of years in savings housing the gangs and our enemies could have mansion and his buddies as neighbors.

I'm closing this thread because it sucks. No more politics. We win.
