View Full Version : Transmission Question
This may be a stupid question, but my old car had three drive gears (1, 2, and D). My LB yaris automatic has 1, 2, D3. It almost seems like there is a D gear, but I am not sure. Can someone explain the "D" vs. the "D3"? It seems like the car is struggles more at higher speeds with the D3 than what seems to be the D. I just want to make sure the D3 is what I am supposed to be using. Sorry for the stupid question, but my previous car was a 1991 so it was much older. Thanks.

When you are going up hill and you find the transmission constantly searching and shifting into D3 it is best to leick it left and leave it there until you top out the hill.

Next time get a stick, so you can decide which gear you want to run with

hihi try going uphill in 5th , a moonwalking squirrel will beat ya lol
Not if I hit it first before he starts at the bottom
Thanks a bunch. To get this straight, for most of my driving (highway and not passing), I should be in D, correct? The D seems so odd since it is right down from N.

That would have made things easier! I only just starting learning to drive a stick so I did not want to get a stick until I know if I would like it. I actually have to admit, I eat breakfast in my car so shifting would get in the way.

Each has it's merits, but I prefer manual transmission if I can get it - same as jojo - I like to tell the engine what to do, not the other way around. :)

Just put the thing in "D" and drive the car. The automatic transmission is a brilliant piece of work and it knows exactly what to do.

Thank you for you words of wisdom :P. On the automatic, there is no "D" labeled: only D3, 2, 1, etc. My last car only had 1, 2, and D (no "D3" labeled).

For the one with 3D, there actually are left and right.
Left is 3 and right is D.
Maybe it's the other way if your handle is on the right side.
I don't know but if it is, then it has D on the left and 3 on the right?

It is not D3!!!!!! It is 3 - D... which quite simply means that to the left is 3rd gear and to the right is D for drive... which is 4th gear. Try moving the shift lever from left to right when you are in the 3 - D position, then you may catch on to how it works. Or, return to the dealer and ask the service writer to show you how the transmission shifter works.

It is actually a very unusual setup and salespeople should review this with customers.

Easy...because not all of us have time if we are working full time and going to school. I was able to read some of it, but did not read the whole thing.

I know how it works, I was asking the difference between the D and the what I thought was D3. My old car did not have a 3rd gear.

The D is on the right and the 3 is on the left which I thought was a weird set up. It's very different from any car....even my grandmother's old toyota.

I like the set-up, it makes sense as it allows for easier downshifts with the auto.
And I don't see how tough it is to figure out, all you have to do is run the shifter through the gears to realize how it works. Heck, I also work full time and am going to grad school, plus I have two young kids; and I found time to read the owner's manual. It's not like a 500-page graduate level book on the history of military deception (which I am in the middle of reading)!

Pretty simple 4 speed automatic,no matter what they call each gear.
Each gear has two options lower or higher.
They are made in a way to prevent you from over shifting and slamming the car into reverse,or another unwanted gear.

Why don't people just answer a simple question without dragging it out and insulting the person asking it?

While I haven't seen it before, I'm surprised some people had this much trouble with it. I'm far from an automotive person, but, just looking the gear selector it lays it out pretty plainly.

3 is beside D. There is no 3-D3 there's a 3-D you can slide the shifter left and right there, so one could (should) be able to conclude that 3 is on the left and D is on the right.:iono:

When you put the car in 3D all of a sudden everything turns Blue and Red, and things jump out at you. You'll need a special pair of glasses to drive correctly

Most automatic toyotas I have seen here are exactly like that... you're in D, need to downshift, just tap the lever to the side, very convenient..

if u did that in any auto car.....anywhere it will case damage. some cars alot faster then others but its not good for your tranny. i was told 3 drops like that in a dodge and its time for a new tranny. i was a stupid kid and on my moms high-ish milage camry (200,000km) i did it a few times and a few reverse drops (go in reverse as fast as the car will go and slam it into drive and slam the gas)..... the car still works..... but the tranny needs a bit of work now. lol, after a few times i oculd definatly feel the difference.
as for the OP, your old cars DID have 1, 2, 3, and D. (unless it was a really old auto that only had 3 gears..... if tht was ever built) the only difference is on the shifter only 1, 2, and D were shown, the 3 was the little o/d button.

I know for a fact the car will not go into Reverse if you're moving forward at more than 13km/h. But I'm not sure about going from reverse to Drive at that speed. I don't think I've ever gone backwards that fast. Plus I don't have an Slushbox to try it.

i have put a chevy uplander minivan into reverse gear at 50kmh forward...
let me tell you.. it GOT into gear and actually tried to reverse..
result was locking the wheels... and it almost felt the transmission was going to fall off. lol
