View Full Version : Best synthetic for HOT weather?

Well, with my Yaris turning 8k km yesterday, I guess it's time to start getting ready for my incoming oil change.

The dealer schedules an oil change every 10k kms (6213.71 miles), and I'm wondering if at that mileage I can make the switch to synthetic, or if it would be better to go with a synthetic blend for now, and then switch to full synthetic?

Also, I'd like to know which oil would be best to use in a country that averages ~35°C on a normal sunny day. Brand recommendations are very welcome, but since I probably won't have engine oil shipped from the US to Panama, I'm most likely to go with the best brand I can find locally.

Thanks in advance =)

see the posts below for reference , such as REASON TO CHANGE FACTORY FILL SOONER , PENNZOIL Platinum : U.O.A. for '07 YARIS , Q.S synthetic thread , SHELL synthetic post or others . Many different views on this subject . I would stick with a 5w-30 , be it conventional ( regular ) , a syn-blend , or all synthetic . GOOD LUCK

I'd keep it stock oil.

Is it too early for a switch to syn?

depends on how much a quart of oil cost in your area . What brands are available ? A syn-blend or full synthetic be fine at 5,000 miles or > . I'd stay at 5w-30 due to high temps and humidity . Do you do quite a bit of city driving ? Stuck in slow moving traffic , stop and go driving ? Then a good all synthetic engine oil would help that situation .

I'm very happy with Motul 300V 5W-30 here in Socal weather and traffic.

I drive like 90% city driving. LOTS of stop-and-go (never live in Panama, traffic is HELL) with about 25mph max for a couple min, then stop.

When traffic is lighter, I rarely ever go past 65mph.

AMSoil 5w-30.

Check your MANUAL for recommended change intervals, NOT the dealership, the lowest denominator typically works behind the counter...

Here they do not recommend going lower than 30... right now I am using 5w-40, heck the workshop wanted to put in 5w-50!

I asked the dealer to put synthetic in on the first oil change(8000kms),he happily complied and the car is now on a permanent diet of Mobil1.

Thanks alot for the input guys =)

I'll be on the lookout for 5W-30. The brand debate is everywhere else in the forum, so I won't start another one here

BTW you MPG looks low - is this all city S+G driving? You should be seeing 30+ with a average driving style.

Tell me about it... to top it off I have a 1.3 yaris instead of a 1.5 like most of you guys, I really don't know what's up with that.

Using amsoil 5w-30 high performance fully synthetic oil. Cost me nearly 60 bucks for 4 quarts of oil and a K&N oil filter.

OUCH! I paid only $38.75 for 4 qts of the AMSOIL HP 5w-30 and the AMSOIL EaO09 synthetic oil filter.

If you want 2 EaO09 filters, cheap, pm me.
I'm not a dealer, just a guy that got a good deal and has a couple of filters on the shelf.

no harm . If you want you could use a synthetic blend ( 20% syn or greater ) and then go to a regular oil . MOTORCRAFT and TROPARTIC synthetic blends are supposed to be about a 60% conventional / 40% synthetic mix . Then go to all conventional motor oil of your liking . If you look at the back of synthetic oil bottles or go to oil companies websites you'll see where it states synthetics can be mixed with a regular oil . Think about it , the case where you can't go back to / mix a conventional with a synthetic , then there wouldn't be synthetic blends .

these too have close to 40% synthetic as a blend . KENDALL GT-1 syn-blend and PHILLIPS 76 Super syn blend . All mentioned here and above are products of CONOCO PHILLIPS . Here's their website , www.conocophillips.com/products/consumer/lubricants/index.htm , click on BRAND SITES on bottom of page for more input and then you could call their toll free tech lines ( very helpful ) or/and look at PRODUCT DATA SHEETS of their oils .

Did you locate the hyper 5w-30? I think that's the only Eneos 5w-30 that's full synthetic. I was using Eneos 5w-30 but switched because it wasn't a full synthetic. Box said full synthetic, but bottles didn't, and website didn't.

No, I was just gonna go to a local shop to pick it up. But after reading the reviews (UOA's) on it on various forums, i am changing my mind. I have been using redline in my WRX, and love it. Wanna try it in the yaris.

Y'know a lot of people bash on M1. But it is a good quality oil. Since i switched to redline i really like it. Amzoil is good too, but i don't know about zero weight. Kinda scary, i used to run it, but felt it was too thin.

A.U. , we use REDLINE MT-90 ( 75w-90 , GL-4 ) for the '08 5 speed manual liftback . Since I changed it , the shifting is much smoother in the cold and when going into reverse . No more clunk . I'd go with it for motor oil if was cheaper . May use the AMSOIL MTG ( 75w-90 , GL-4 ) gear oil at 50,000 miles or so .

here's a new Used Oil Analysis for REDLINE 5w-30 , www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1317221&gonew=1#UNREAD . Used for 2000 CELICA GT-S . This true syn-oil seems to take abuse quite well . Be good for hot weather driving . Tempting ain't it ?

How's that UOA compare to the Pennzoil Platinum?
I used Redline in my last car, but stopped using it because I was getting it locally and paying too much for it ($14.99 per qt)

gid

for the money I'd stick with the PLATINUM . The REDLINE does a bit better , but not worth the $7 > 10 a quart more . Especially if doing the 5,000 mile oil change intervals under warranty .
