do these eyelids come off easily? meaning could someone just go up to your car and yank them off? if so then i think ill go with the vinyl..cheaper and i wouldnt have to worry about getting off work on day and its missing....damn vandals!
Treyz
12-17-2008, 07:27 PM
not really. But then again, I guess it also depends on what version you have. No one really steals these to begin with and most people who modify our cars are on here. I have v2 which still have a base to them. I believe it's v3 that have that part eliminated.
tk-421
12-17-2008, 07:58 PM
do these eyelids come off easily?
It is NOT easy to remove the eyelids, as long as you use the 3M tape that I recommend, which is designed to bond with the plastic parts of your car. Then again, if someone tries to pry them off, they may damage the eyelids, which means that at least that idiot won't be able to use them for anything.
I have v2 which still have a base to them. I believe it's v3 that have that part eliminated.
The difference between v2 and v3 is essentially just the base, as Treyz correctly mentioned. The base may help a bit on this issue, but not really. The upside of not having the base is that the eyelids are much closer to an OEM look, and there's virtually no rubbing when opening/closing the hood.
So, in essence, the eyelids are as secure as any other "add-on" body part that is attached to your car (be it a spoiler, rocker panels, etc). Obviously those parts will be more secure if they are drilled/bolted in place as well as taped, which is something that cannot be accomplished with the eyelids.

Guess I'll jump onto the eyelid band wagon. Ordered up a pair from Garm today. Next I need to order the paint and probably some clear coat. He recommended AutomotiveTouchUp.com for the supplies. Looks like $19.95 for the spray paint (12oz) and $7.95 for the clear coat (12oz). They make it real easy to get the right paint. Total shipped to my door is $36.23. Just paid for those items too.
I'll post some before and after shots. It will probably be in January before I can get it done.

Once I got mine, I test fitted them over and over sanding down what ever was needed. Got the gap even on both sides so that there is no rubbing.

So if I get these I'll have to probably paint them. Does anyone by any chance know what the color "Blaze Blue" is known outside of Toyota? I don't want to mess up the color and have to repaint it.
Oh and how much would it cost to have these painted?
Edit: Sorry hadn't noticed someone went over price already. Either way, if anyone actually knows what Blazing Blue is known as to the rest of the world, it'll save me some guess work (and possibly some money). heh

Received my eyelids yesterday, thanks Garm! Just waiting for the paint. Looks like that will arrive sometime next week. I'm not sure how quickly I'll get to paint them. May need to wait for drier weather.
Question, those of you with them painted and installed, did you paint the underside too? Any advantage or disadvantage?

Just follow the instructions on the can. I don;t know exactly where Roseville is in Cali, but if you are in southern Cali, should be no problem as long as the weather is over 50 degrees and there is low humidity. If not, then I would suggest indoors then.

Thanks Treyz. I'm in northern CA, near Sacramento. Did you paint the underside of the eyelids too? It would almost seem that the rough unfinished surface of the eyelid next to the headlight would hold the doublesided sticky tape better then if it were painted. :iono:

There is no need to paint the underside of the eyelids. The 3M tape will be able to stick to both painted or unpainted surfaces just the same, though.
Just make sure to paint the edges in order to make it look like it's painted all over.

Here's a teaser...the weather was warm enough over the past weekend that I made a lot of progress on getting my set painted and clear coated. The Flint Mica came out great! However, to my rather discerning eye, there is a little too much 'orange peel' in the clear for my tastes. A buddy at work paints motorcycles as a side business and he's going to take a look at my work so far and make some suggestions. Based upon my description today, he thinks that perhaps gentle wet sanding with some 1,200 or 1,500 grit sandpaper might do the trick, then spray on another coat or two of clear to finish it off. I'll post up the final pics when they are ready. Stay tuned!

Wow, it's been awhile since I bought them but they are finally done! The color match was perfect! I used 3m double sided molding tape, cut to fit using a razor blade, then applied to the back of the eyelids then carefully attached them. Now my little guy has a more aggressive look. I'm very happy with the way they turned out. I hope you think so too.

Thanks much!
Yeah, my buddy who paints motorcycles was quite impressed. The key is to do many 'lite' coats, giving about 5-10 minutes between them. Wet color sanding with 1200 - 1500 grit paper makes them nice and smooth. I did the wet sanding between the paint and applying the clear coat. I'll let them cure for a few weeks, then I'll do the polish and wax thing to seal 'em up.

The way I would approach that would be to get an unpainted set (http://shop.microimageonline.com/product.sc?categoryId=5&productId=67) and CF wrap (http://shop.microimageonline.com/product.sc?categoryId=6&productId=30). Those two items are available on the MicroImage store.

that stuff is real CF, but in a convenient adhesive-backed form.
You could take the eyelids to be CF-wrapped, but it'll essentially be the same thing, though with maybe a more durable/glossy finish.
BTW I took my old ones out of storage, I think it'll soon be time to disable the ugly starship LEDs on my headlights and return to the mean look

If you still need pics I'll hopefully be splurging on eyelids within the next month..... Well, it's all about perspective. The way I look at it, my car mods should last a lot longer than any vacation I take. Plus, you'll spend a lot more than what's needed for tint+ lids anyway.
Thanks for the offer to take some pics. I could really use some more LB ones!

I like that look, kustom play! Thanks for the pics.
Paint fade is one of the reasons brand new parts don't match the car. Honestly though, I am pretty sure it had more to do with how much paint actually varies between countries. I need some paint samples from the actual car it's going to be installed on in order to get a perfect match.
Just out of curiosity: Did the white even out with the rest of the car over time?

Any reputable shop should be able to match your color without issues. Just make sure they use enough flint to match your color just right.

There's no DIY per say, since the process is very simple:
Clean the areas with rubbing alcohol and let dry
Stick one side of the 3M tape below each piece
stick the other side on top of each lamp
press firmly on both eyelids and let them set 10-15 mins
Done!

I can't tell you how many times I've taken mine off and put back on .. no problems at all. I'm running with version 2 of these eyelids which still has the base which was later eliminated for version 3.
1. Initial install

3. Removed for winter '08/'09

5. Removed for trade in of '07

You can easily do it yourself. Check out www.AutomotiveTouchUp.com for the supplies. Back in December I paid $19.95 for the spray paint (12oz) and $7.95 for the clear coat (12oz). They make it real easy to get the right paint. Total shipped to my door is $36.23. Color match was spot on. Look back through this thread for some of my other posts around the December, January timeframe. I have some pics posted and how I prepped them.
Good luck!

Heat is the trick to making the double sided tape easier to handle. Either do it on a hot sunny day, or use a blow dryer to heat the tape up and carefully pull them off slowly.

No problem. I think the hardest part was to figure out a way to hold the eyelids so you can paint them and let them dry. You only need to get to the top and edges, the bottom can be left un-painted. I ended up using papertowel tubes, no papertowels on it of course, and taped them to the underside of the eyelids. Once they are secure, find a spot that you can set the tube down (standing it upright) and paint. Maybe stick a screwdriver into the ground and put the tube over it. Start the paint process by holding down the button on the spray paint can before you get to the eyelid and continue with the paint until after the eyelid. Hold the can about 8 - 10" away and move the spray can back and forth smoothly. Don't try to cover it in one or two passes. Be patient and follow the directions on the cans. Many light coats are better than 2 or 3 thick coats. Follow the same process for the clear coat, making sure the actual paint has had plenty of time to cure. Again, check the clear coat spray can for when it's safe to spray the clear. You can do it!

Use a blow dryer next time to strech the vinyl out so you don't have the folds/crinkles. You will need to pull off the headlights to be successful in that.

Yeah, in this this case, Vinyl would be the best case, but you need to see what's translucent. But the tint should have contoured better with the heat though no?

I mean the headlight assembly without the yellow side markers like you can get for 07-08. Adding eyelids to an ugly headlight just draws attention to the bad styling.

07-29-2009, 12:54 PM
^ Most states require that amber reflector. Toyota put them in the head light because if they put it anywhere else then it would have been "BAD" styling. If you take out amber reflector you will probably get ticketed for it alot. But if it really bothers you that much then bake your head light, pull them apart, and remove the reflector.

Check the first and second posts in this thread for pics on white cars.
As far as the improvement thing, I think it sets the car apart from all others and makes it look more aggressive, which is something the Yaris could use more of, if you ask me. If you like that idea, then try them out. It's not like they're super expensive... You can always sell them here if you change your mind too.

Your car looks great.
How about painting the eyelids black to match your black hood line? That would look sweet.

The hood is actually carbon fiber. I was going to have the eyelids wrapped in CF but after a test fit with them painted I decided to leave as is. I feel that leaving them painted really breaks up the carbon look while still looking agressive and clean. I used my blackberry to take that pic, will take a better one with the real camera soon. It really looks awesome in person.

Yes I've quoted myself, lol. But I found a couple good pics to share showing the eyelids better, and I painted the grill BACK to black (stupid body shop assuming I wanted the galvanized wire look)

They don't come painted for one reason is because there were some issues with them matching exactly to the cars paint. Mine did, but I got mine a while back from tk, and had to modify them to fit right. I had mine recently repainted after the accident because there were some rock chips and the dumbass shop spider-cracked one of them trying to pull them off. I kinda covered the ENTIRE underside of the eyelid with 3M heavy duty emblem tape.
