What do you think would be the most influencial car movie that brought you to love everything about the sheetmetal that can roll down the road at 100+ mph?

It may be hard to believe, but for me growing up it was Grease...they had some phat street rods and roadsters and I loved the roar of the big v-8s.

def in todays world of modifying , Fast and Furious no question , it brought about car modding more as a fashion than a way of life , which is good for sales , but not good for us car heads , as it makes everyone look like fashion heads rather than true max tunning guys , do i make sense?

Immediately afterwards, I took automotive shop and repair and anything else I thought that I could take to make the car faster. 240SX Fastback with a KA24DET and a huge spoiler? Yeah, that was me about 5 years ago. I won't deny it. I've grown and learned sinced then, but there will always be the little ricer inside of me.

LeMans- Steve McQueen is a god.

Bet nobody thought of that. The Late Night Drive In on Speed shows it every once in a while. Work night or not, I'll stay up 'til 3 to watch it- again.

There is nothing that comes close to hearing an old Ferrari GTB or old school Porsche LM screaming down the backstrech of the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Okay it was never really a movie (maybe a spoof or one that was crappy rip-off) but Knight Rider...I know you're shocked and wonder if this has to do with my user name:laugh: :bellyroll:

But its my favorite 80's show (yeah I know not a movie!).
Although they did a movie version early 90's but I don't think it was approved by Larson (Knight Rider creator) and its sucked badly...okay, okay Knight Rider was a sappy poorly done show but that's the beauty of 80's shows like this one, that's what makes it great!! And David Hasselhoff! Need I say more?

Back in the 70's it would have been Corvette Summer followed by Smokey and The Bandit. That 'Vette in CS just blew me away back in the day.

Now that I am older, it's Ronin. Any movie with an Audi S8 can't be bad. :)

Smokey and the Bandit 2.
There was a second one!?! LOL .. I didnt even know! Ive got the 1st one on dvd ... has the 2nd got same characters?

Anyone seen TAXI? NO... not the crappy remake with Queen Latifa, but the original 3 FRench Films by Luc Besson starring a heap of Peugeots at really high speeds ? AWESOME movies-- especially the first 2, the 3rd one is a bit far fetched as the car grew wings and could glide. LOL

Another recent lot of films i enjoyed were The Transporter 1&2 -- More Euros belting around at high speeds!

There were three, actually. The 2nd had the same characters, the 3rd didn't. I was kidding, in any case. ;)

I'll have to say Bullit because it was the first car chase I remember seeingm. My dad was all excited about it when I was little (early 1980s).

Other than that, the original Italian Job is still an amazing car movie.

Finally Duel is a crazy movie. Influential? No, but a great movie nonetheless.

Bullit, yes... it had to be part of the influence to buy a 66 Mustang. Though I bought a coupe not a fastback.

Corvette Summer influenced me to want to go to Vegas, yeah I know the car was atrocious, but who knew that then?

Ronin pretty much compelled me to buy the only BMW I've owned, a black 325i.

Two Lane Blacktop, love that primered 55 Chevy.... and the GTO too.
Canonball run had that great opening sequence with the Lamborghini Countach driving in the desert.
As a kid watching TV, it had to be the Dukes of Hazzard & Knight Rider.

Now this is the kind of thread that I was hoping for when I created it...a lot of variety. As for me I would also have to add Smokey and the Bandit as others have as well as American Graffitti.

American Graffiti! Good one! I love the scene where he throws the ticket into the glovebox full of tickets.

Sorry if I'm not making much sense (a few too many). :drinking:

If we mean "influential" as in influencing the world of cars and tuning, then definitely the Fast and the Furious, which basically turned the whole underground street tuning to be very much above ground.

In terms of influencing myself, well, not quite a movie, but the Initial D animes (move was OK...), the original french Taxi movie, Cannonball run, original italian job (gonna get a classic mini at some point in the future... just hard to find here), and so much more!

I think the very first movie that sparked my intrest in cars was Cannonball Run. As a kid I day-dreamed about the Countach pretty much daily.

Does anybody remember The Wraith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wraith)?

I’m showing my age here but for me it would have to be The Graduate. Dustin Hoffman buys a little Alfa Romeo from the cash he made screwing his girlfriend’s mom - GREAT friggin movie! I fell in love with small cars right then.
Since then I’ve owned a Mini, a TR6, a Dodge Colt, a Miata, and next a Yaris! (I’ve also owned a couple of big cars in there but who cares about those?)

I remember when the Fast and the Furious came out. Within a year afterwards I had convinced my girlfriend's mother to buy her a MKII supra, had dumped 2 10's, a head unit, a TV, a playstation 2, full components, and 3 amps into it, and crashed it into a tree...

It definitely isn't well put together, but you can't argue that movie's influence.

True, even if it did take the import scene down a road that a lot of us pre-F&F import fans didn't want it to go.

Its kind of like politics... I have to learn from the mistakes of my generation. At one point, your car was cool for having a giant intercooler or the loudest exhaust... its finally coming around again where things like performance, function, and daily drivability are in again, and thank GOD.
