Roof Strength

Random question, can I stand on top of my car without denting it?

Crash test regulations says that roofs have to withstand at least 1.5 times the weight of the car without collapsing into the passenger compartment for rollover protection. But the roof is basically sheet metal(?) that can dent.

Seriously, just because the car is designed to take that much weight doesn't mean the bodywork will! I don't think there are many cars out there that would take the concentrated weight of an adult without causing damage, much less econo-boxes like our beloved Yarii!

Yes it will cave but the overall weight of the car will be supported so the passenger compartment will not collapse and crush everyone inside......

How much do you weigh? Off topic -- There were some idiots celebrating A Rockies victory last year by jumping on the hood and roof of a cop car. A local TV film crew shot the event. Long story short, when these people got arrested they felt like real victims.

Good question, I wonder how much weight exactly the roof can take? It must be listed on the yaris site somwhere, or atleast youd think it would be.

the roof rack i have on my sedan is rated for 100lbs(according to yakima), but that may be just them being careful. the exact same set-up is rated for 165lbs. on other vehicles so take that for what you will.... also, the rack is supported in four different spots to help spread that weight out so it's not all concentrated in one area. like you said, i'm sure the roof will support the car's weight in a roll-over, but i can't imagine other components of the car taking that weight(ie. suspension, tires, etc) right-side-up!

If you ever decide to test the roof strength by standing on it, please do all of us readers a favor and take a picture for us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You may end up changing your roof design !:laugh::laugh:

The strength of the roof is most likely along the edges as this is waht's most important in a rollover (think of a roll cage), the center of it would be kinda soft, except where there are the cross-members.

In other words if you want to stand on your roof, spread your feet out to the edges and there should be no dents :biggrin:

ok, here i is weighing in on the issue, since i do get on the roof to wash/wax that part of the car... the center does cave easy.. iv done it.. it just gets a big indentation.. but i was able to get mine out when i did it last time.. though i still dont recommend standing on it.. like they said earlier

i just lay on it to wash it cuz im short so its easier for me to open the door and climb up the seat to the roof.. i usually lay out flat to keep my weight out of one area...just because it says it wont affect the cabin, doesnt mean it wont damage the roof panel...

sorry Art, i like washing my own car now.. every time i go to a car wash.. i feel the need to rewash it.. or like my sister, spend an additional 3 hours detailling it cuz they do a shitty job.. you'd think for $50/hr they charge(like $10-20 for a 20 minute wash...) they would do a damn better job!
