Just FYI, if you park your Yaris, please be sure to engage the e-brake and/or put it in gear...

wow that sucks hows the damage

The quote guesstimated a little over $4000. I turned it in the 5th of this month (Nov) and they say I probably won't get it back until at least the 25th.

It's times like this that make me thankful for keeping my other car.

I was taught to always engage the parking brake when parked. Is it not good for the car to do that?

I blame it on my job. Shit was hitting the fan. I had to deliver a part ASAP. I was in a hurry. I just wasn't thinking. It makes me sad.

bummer :frown:

I always pull the parking brake by reflex, tough I don't particularly trust it if there's an actual incline, put the car in gear too

I'm sorry. That has to suck. My car did that once while I was working on it, but I knew it was going to happen, just didn't expect it when it did, and the car stopped on a rock... about 2 inches from my foot. Nothing as serious as having 4 grand in damage. Really sorry to hear about that. Glad it didn't make it into traffic though, or hit someone elses car. Could have been a LOT worse. Good luck with the fix though. You going to try to get after market parts in place? I would. Ask and se if it's possible. Can't hurt.

I had this happens to my friend's car once but quite the opposite rly,

It had gotten a flat ...
we were parked on a decline facing down towards a coffee shop.
Friend put the car in neutral, Put the parking break on ...
Went to put the car up on the jack ...
(btw, the back right tire was flat)
And the car rolled down the hill and stopped as it hit the curb right in front of the shop.

needless to say we scared a lot of people that day.

Not sure why it rolled ... I knew we should have done it on flat ground, but there wasnt a flat ground for miles and it was riding on the rim...

whats a girl to do.

haha.

I did this once. I was going into work and must have had a lot of stuff to grab and was running late. While walking to the door I had this strange feeling, like someone was watching me so I turned around to find my car rolling backwards..towards a pond. Fabulous...I dropped everything and RAN...caught her and was able to stop her. Whew..

I haven't forgotten the brake since!

I don't set the brake in bad weather like snow .I saw a guy with his brake froze once at work.

Park it in first when in doubt.

Revsson
11-16-2008, 10:22 AM
Sorry this happened to you. I agree with detroiter that you should leave it in gear
when parking. If I park facing downhill, I usually leave it in reverse. If parking facing
uphill, I leave it in first.

As for jacking up the car, you should always block one of the wheels. I used to carry
a block of wood in the old car, (haven't transferred it over yet), to put behind one of
the wheels opposite of the wheel you are going to remove.

I know some people that don't use the parking brake during the winter months because
they, too, are afraid it will freeze up. I guess there is that chance. Yet, as the car
gets older, the parts rust and the parking brake might not work when you really need it.

Too bad there isn't security cam video from the shop that would show
the "excitement" :eyebulge: that you generated in there. :bellyroll:

$4000 DAMAGE! How far and fast did it roll?

You must be young, you didn't accept blame for not thinking to engage the brake or transmission.

I did. They said no. Insurance is only going to pay for what I had, and since I had no after market parts, they will not get them. Oh well. I tried. :)

Yeah I doubt I will either. What really gets me is when I was running inside I was like... I feel like I'm forgetting something.

About 50 yards or so. Don't know how fast. Nobody saw it. Not gonna lie, I'm pretty sure to see that happening I probably would have giggled. I mean, seriously, how comical would it have been to see a car just roll away lol. Also, it is MY car and I don't let other people drive MY car so obviously it was ME who didn't park the car properly.

At least you didnt total it...I live on top of a mountain and I had left my old nissan in reverse because the parking brake didnt work...I woke up about halfway through the night when I heard a crash to find it flipped on its side against a tree after rolling only god knows how many times down the embankment.....Good news I ran it to the junkyard and got the money off of it to pay the down payment on my Yaris....I shoulda totaled it sooner^_-

I have an automatic and do not use the parking brake. I exercise the e-brake and move it about once a week but here in VT parking brakes freeze up all the time and so do regular brakes when set.

I would almost suggest a chock for a wheel ...........

Since this has happened you WILL NEVER let it happen again. It is similar to a boater forgetting the plug...... shit happens. Glad no body was hurt.

Chalk it up as experiance

I saw this video on true tv. Where the guy just bought a brand new truck. He went to 711 to buy something and left his car running. Somehow it poped in reverse and then started to roll backwards made a loop through the parking lot out through the steet and somehow parallel parked itself in the parking lot across the street and poped back into park. When he came out he thought someone stole his car and then when the police came to watch the survalance video they coudlnt believe thier eyes.

Luckly no one was hurt and not even a scratch on his car.

I had my VW Fox do something like that once - it was the day I found out the e-brake REALLY needed adjusting. Rolled down the driveway and across the road into a neighbor's hedge. Luckily she laughed and just asked me to move my car

I did that with my Yaris right after I got it. Comes with the territory of relearning how to drive a stick car. She will rise from the ashes, no worries.

i always park in gear with the brake up

i think it comes from having older cars where the e brake never really had good holding power

i had an XB back in the day, i parked it on a hill with the e brake up and in gear (mind you this was brand new) and i hear this creaking, and it would slowly start rolling backwards

so i stood there watching it for 10 mins slowly inching backwards

that car had some issues straight from the factory, im glad i sold it

If you don't regularly use the parking brake, the rear drum brakes will get out of adjustment on many cars. Haven't checked the Yaris manuals to see if it's true on this one. But I've been setting my brake in the expectation that it is how it works, as well as for safety.

I once left my 1940 Ford out of gear with the parking brake off, and it rolled slowly across a parking lot into the side of a Dodge Challenger. It didn't damage the Ford, only scratched my parking sticker. Folded in the quarter panel of the Challenger.

dont feel too bad, thats the reason i bought the new bumper from garm, except my little accident (not setting brake hard enough) was in a restarant parking lot and rolled downhill two lines of cars into the wall around the outside dining area luckily it didnt hit the frame hard

I should try that with my new Yaris. Better to know now instead of later.

Both these are good - the other thing you can do is turn the nearside wheel into the kerb so it's touching and won't want to go anywhere. We don't get much snow over here, (if we have two inches the country closes down!) but's it's useful for slippy weather.

Honestly, I'm glad to read that it was an e-brake thing and wasn't stolen. I've come out to where I thought I parked my car and it wasn't there and had been stolen (1998 Honda Civic). Worst feeling ever.
