That is up to the OP -- my answer would be no, it's not the same as racing on a standard track surface, with a burnout box, a drag tree starting light, etc.

Yeah, I think we're going for track times here. You shouldn't be doing quarter mile runs on the street anyway, mister.

i had my echo(i know, not a yaris, but same motor, tranny, and factory HP rating) out at the track last weekend, and have timeslips for my stock echo with full weight and my mini sub in the trunk on freshly paved, not fully seasoned track, where i cracked a 17.373 @ 79.46... will upload timeslip later when i get my scanner booted up and re-installed to my computer...
So who will break into the 13's first?
Wow - I just stumbled across this forum. I am currently racing my Yaris at Mission Raceway - always getting laughed at. So this season I thought I would change a few things on my car.
Best time to date (June 19th 2009) 13.96 @ 95 mph
Getting a lot more respect this season until 3 weeks ago when I blew the engine trying to make it in to the 12 second bracket. Bent a rod, broke a piston and sliced the engine casing between cyclinder # 1 & #2. I can see the rear fire wall through my engine.
I have attached video below of the blow out - note that the camera guy made an error - we were trying to break into the 12's. I was racing a 350z.

Now working on a stronger engine with more goodies.
I will post time slips as soon as I can.

Time slips are at home - at work right now.
Mods include:
Rear Suspension - Boss suspension - full adjustable for daily to track use
24 x 8 x 15 Slicks on light weight front racing mags
Stock rear wheels at 40psi
All seats removed except driverside seat
NOS kit
All engine and transmission - stock
When I tried to break the 12's - We just finished installing 2.5" exhaust from dowpipe back (with cat delete). And boosted the NOS.

We are keeping the quanity and nozzle sizes quiet for now - due to some rival competition that is on the go right now (Yaris vs MKV GTi with modded FSI turbo set ups) so we can keep them guessing.
Nothing worse for the VW guys loosing to a 'stock' Yaris:evil:

I've got 17.54 @ 78.37mph in a bone stock '09 Yaris HB with the 5 speed. It'll be next week before I get the slip to a scanner though. No weight reductions, no mods whatsoever, not even a tach. The 60 foot times were off as I was running the stock rubbers... I'm gonna pick up some slick on wide steelies, and figure out a tach/shift light combo before I head back. Oh and, I don't fall under the "unseasoned" drivers group either.

You were running higher than 50hp shot for sure...
If you did a 75hp shot you got balls! props for that!
I'm helping a friend installing a NX wet kit on his Yaris on the next couple of weeks. But we will use 35hp nozzles for the street and 50hp nozzles for the track only... we will use some high octane fuel on the 50hp runs... just for extra safety...

You know all my engine mods, but I will be trying some drag slicks I got from Art IF they fit over my brakes. I'll get them out and measure them up tomorrow. Probably need spacers.
My suspension is:
Silk Road coilovers
TRD motor mounts
BeatRush trans mount
UR rear underbrace
Tanabe front strut brace
UR 23mm rear sway bar (like that will matter, LOL)

Make sure you turn up the dampening on you rear shocks all the way and put your rear tires at max PSI to try and keep weight transfer to a minimum. Have you been working on your launches?

You need to make them fit..!!! If not get others that fit... or get rid of the front BBK. Like you will need that on the track! Taking your car w/o a proper set torsion tires will be like not going at all. Is a most!!
Is important to dial the right pressure for the drag slicks. I'm sure Art can give you a few pointers as he has experience with the box.
Front: just high enough not to rub the tires. Stiffness Probably some where in the middle. Front suspension should allow for some travel but have good dampening to prevent bounce.
Rear: as high as the silkroads allow and full stiff. Over inflated rear tires...
Leave the rear under braces and sway bar at home!!
Go to the local strip to practice some launches!
Oh and please.... HD video!!!!

Yeah was hoping it would be better, what can you expect from a autobox.
How about a 16.9 from my autobox, NA. I lowered my pressure to 26-28psi on stock wheels/tires in the front. You should get better times that way.

Yah seriously. I think my car would pull off a low 15 if not high 14s (with a great driver). I have no rear seat, 2.25" headerback exhaust, no dynomat/sounds or spare wheel, and I weigh half of his body weight ( lol, ok not really. almost! ). I would just need to get the right PSI set for my tires.
*However, whenever a strip is finally built again in oahu; i'll definately be getting a LSD, lightened flywheel, and stage 2 clutch!

I have an xA, but I'll throw some times out there.
a few years ago, I had a Blitz sc... best with that was a 15.0 (drag radials)
I then added 35HP shot of nitrous... I ran a 14.01 @99
Now I am turbocharged (greddy kit). I pulled a 14.7 on 7.5 pounds of boost (with drag radials) 133whp.
Now I have a built motor, and 3" exhaust, cranked up the boost and a few weeks ago I ran a 14.3 @99mph (on street tires) 171whp.
ps... dyno numbers are on dyno dynamics w/ zero correction
Im going to the strip again this weekend after upgrading my downpipe, and put the radials back on. Hope to break into the 13's!!!

Wait, you're a better driver? Where did that come from :iono:
You're just more likely to pull better times because of the lighter, better shifting manual tranny .
I still think my 16.97 with my n/a auto isn't that bad, it still has yet to be beat.

My car was completly stock at that point and time, just lowered my tire pressure up front to 28psi, and increased my rear psi to 50.
I had at one point a fairly modded yaris though. CAI, Resonator back exhaust with a flowmaster 60 series, SSK, TRD shocks and df210 springs, and I also bought an extra spare tire for at the track. I upgraded my tires to Nitto 205/55/15's and was going to put on 2 spares so I could have reduced drag on the rear.
Never ran it at the 1/4 again, but I ran it at an 1/8th in midland, tx, and it was pulling 9.5's to 9.7's depending on my launch. Don't really know what that would equate to down @ my old track, but I always figured around a mid 15 or so....
Anyways, the car is back to stock now, except for the tires, I'm running those till I need new ones before I go back to the stock 185/60/15's, lol, why waste em?
Anyone want a used flowmaster 60 series?

I don't have a whole picture of my slip because I haven't ever raced on a track before ...
my boyfriend drove the car at the track last weekend (again, I have never driven on a track before so I didn't feel comfortable) and he babied it off the line because he didn't know the tranny would handle being raced (and because I told him not to break anythig since it''s only two months old!)
So, this is my slip which only has the 1/8 mi time, but I think it did awesome especially since the bf weighs 250lbs and I have a big ass sub box in the back + really heavy wheels.
I will be bringing it out again before the track closes for the year without the sub box, spare, and some other stuff just to see what it can do .... but this is it for now. I was happy with the results :)

those are decent times really, I never bettered a 16.8 na. Your traps should be consistant, as they are more relying on the cars power.

hey here is a cool tool I ran across . http://www.race-cars.net/calculators/et_calculator.html
It is good for determining real world whp numbers, et's, and trap speeds. I entered a few numbers and it seems accuate. Our ta tc weighs 2750lbs(W driver ), 550whp and it trapped at 134.8mph.... the calculator was within 2mph. My xa with 190whp ran 13.6 at 104mph.... calculator was super close. This calculator is also good for determining whether the dyno numbers from your dyno are bs.

15.3 @ 94mph (.2 tenth & 4 mph faster) @ 7psi with new set up. 60ft is the issue here 2.50
That was sputtering all down the track. Something was up with the AEM FIC. On the way home I disconnected it & it ran better. Video will be up soon.

The shot I have was awesome, but ended around the 1000ft mark ( because camera was mounted outside on car) the screen blew shut. I didn't bother messing with the camera after that.
I saw many Scion peeps video taping so hopefully footage will arise. Made 8 passes. I was really pushing hard for decent times, but it was difficult because there was ZERO track prep. I spun 1st and 2nd with slicks at 6psi. 1/8th was actually slower compared to my times at M.I.R. with 50 less whp.

I competed in the 12.50 index class at the Import vs Domestics World Cup finals this past weekend. The track prep was so good that in Saturdays qualifications, I had to turn the boost down by 7psi (about 40whp) to dial in for 12.50s. My first pass I already assumed the track prep was great so it was down 4psi, I ended up pulling a 12.2 anyhow ! Part of me wanted to run full boost to claim a 11 sec pass, but I was focused on dialing the car in. I qualified 8th of 30 cars in that class. 700 cars showed up from around the country to run....... It was packed.
Sunday morning I got one shakedown pass, 12.47... a bit fast but I left the boost alone for a cushion. This was the 1st event I did on a pro tree, but I got it down fairly quick.
1st rd. Foxbody mustang, he pulled a .671 light, I pulled a .251....I pedaled before finish line crossing with a 12.57 to his 12.33 (ran out chasing). WIN
2nd rd. Turbo Intergra , he pulled a .309 light, I pulled a .062....I pedaled before finish line crossing with a 12.63 to his 12.67 . WIN .
Quarter finals. Mustang Cobra, he pulled a .095 light, I pulled a .139.... drove around him in 4th gear then pedaled it for a 12.60 to his 12.72. WIN
Semi finals. 69 Camaro, he pulled a .054 light, I pulled a .126.... when I was in 4th gear I had so much speed catching him, as soon as I was pulling by him I let off thinking I was gonna break out..... I made a mistake doing so. He won by .04 sec, on a holeshot with a 12.72 to my 12.69.
I was still happy to get that far, anouncer said my car was a crowd favorite... so that was especially humbling because 10,000 people were in the stands. Took home some cash and good memories. This was a promo video for the event to put in perspective its caliber . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWuiALgcU0A&feature=player_embedded

that is awesome.. congrats dude. sux that you have to let off the a bit to win. haha..
I am not familiar with some of the drag lingo, but what did it mean when you said this?
12.57 to his 12.33 (ran out chasing). WIN
does that mean he is too fast for the 12.50 class?
Blown_xa
11-09-2011, 10:01 AM
I guess the best example .... It is like Pinks All Out (the show). All the cars are capable of running 12.50, so it makes for super close racing. If you run too fast though, you are DQ'd. I decided to sandbag a bit because every once and a while I have a hard time getting in 2nd, so I wanted that cushion. I pedaled it or let off when I was slighty ahead to ensure I wasn't going to run faster than 12.50, hope that makes sense. That mustang that ran a 12.33 was clearly sandbaging, but I crossed the line first anyhow because I treed him... had he crossed 1st, he would have been DQ'd.
ilikerice
11-09-2011, 12:24 PM
thank for explaining it.. I understand the sandbagging part and peddaling it so you dont go TOO fast for your class..
BUT, i still dont quit understand how you beat him in the tree, and you crossed the line before he did. and he still ran faster than you.. My brain is still trying to understand..
quick question may help me, Is "tree" time, how fast your response is when the light turns green to when the car starts to move?
OR, does it just not matter who crosses first, just who gets to point "a" to point "b" faster?
cali yaris
11-09-2011, 12:49 PM
good questions. I've never seen index class racing, so I don't know either.
The "tree" is the light, yes. And the reaction time from the tree is what he is referencing.
It is also called "Handicapped" racing.
You are trying to get to the finish line first without going below your dialed in time, which in this case, was set at 12.5 seconds.
It does not matter who has the faster time - it is who crosses the line first. (Although, of course, the faster the time + the quicker reaction time usually = WIN unless you "break out" / go too fast and beat your dialed in time.)
ilikerice
11-09-2011, 03:20 PM
ok.. I think I sorta kinda get it now.. I'd like to throw in a "what if this happens" question that may help me get to sleep tonight..
If both cars run a 12.45 for example. (highly unlikely i know)
and left car tree time was .555 and right car tree time was .333
right car would win because he would have beaten his tree time.
Another question for BlownXA.. back to the orginal story. Did you win against the foxbody stang because you crossed the line first or because he DQ'ed? I think I may be reading too much into this now..
^ Yep, you got it!
Reaction time + time ran = who gets to the finish line first.
Also, another thought, say you are running 16 seconds and the car you are racing is running 10 seconds - you get to leave 6 seconds earlier at the tree to make it fair. It's all about reaction time and how close to your dial-in you can get.
1st rd. Foxbody mustang, he pulled a .671 light, I pulled a .251....I pedaled before finish line crossing with a 12.57 to his 12.33 (ran out chasing). WIN
He won because the Mustang had a crappy light, so he was trying to chase him down to the finish line (and thus ran too fast.)
BUT - Mustang altogether (with reaction time added in) ran 13.001, xA ran 12.821 altogether, so the xA would have won either way.

yep, that is called bracket racing or ET racing... they had that class too.
I do alot of bracket racing on my motorcycles. We grew up with it as my dad has always had at least one drag car and we went every weekend. Growing up in Ohio has it perks, there's a racetrack in about every town haha. :)

OHHHHHH.. damn I feel stupid now... but yes, this makes total sense. For some reason my brain just didn't want to compute tree time and the fact that both cars do not leave at the same time in some cases

15.0! Was my first time at the track so I think I did pretty well. Only got in one run.
Barely got traction till a quater of the way through second gear. So with a bit of weight reduction, better/deflated tires, dialing in the gain on the ebc (which I'm yet to install) and of course, more practice, I think I'm a chance of a high-mid 14.

Not a Yaris or a 1NZ, but a 1NR-FE and I know there are a few other guys here with 1NR-FEs. Heading to the track and reserving this space for timeslip and modification list. Trying to beat the Motorweek record of 17.4 @ 80mph. Fingers crossed for a 16.999 run or better, but my goal is only better than Motorweek.
***UPDATE***
I managed to get 6 runs in before the CVT was too heat-soaked which resulted in my retirement to go home. Looks like I'll be needing a secondary small aluminum radiator before the CVT to aid in cooling.
In any case, I made my goal to beat Motorweeks best factory time of 17.4 @ 80mph (mostly). I managed a 17.348 @ 79.10mph with headwind gusts of 25mph (pics in comments) and a gradual incline from the line to the traps of around 6-12 feet. Over all, I'm satisfied for a car with 94hp and 89tq and although a 16.999 would have been nice to see, I'm sure I'll manage it at some point in the future.
Thanks to a friend, who managed to record a video against an Evolution X, that somehow only managed a 16.091 @ 97mph to my 17.348 @ 79mph. So here's the vid, with pics and other info.
Modifications - 1ZZ throttle body, K&N drop in filter with velocity stack forward facing on airbox, DC Sports catback exhaust.

Yes Sir! Wasn't my first time at the strip, but it was definitely my first time with any sort of automatic (previously with my supercharged Ep3 running 13.8 at 105mph). Launching in this car is going to require some experimentation as it only revs to 2200rpms and doesn't seem to want to come up to the full 6250 rpm very quickly from a stop. I saw on a few other boards that people lightly let off and slam their foot back down to engage a computer response that encourages a steeper variable gear to be chosen. I don't know though as I've yet to try it. Yesterday morning I also made sure to change a few things including fully gutting both primary and secondary cats (seems like it made a difference, but who knows). Now to install the Camcon, take the backseat out, put my lighter motorcycle Deka battery (made for liter bikes), get some thermal material and see if I can add a gasket between the block and intake manifold, and do a Maxbore port and polish. Then see what it can do in a 1/4 mile run.

Thank you, Sir! I did have a Deka ETX for awhile on my Ep3 and it did have a shortened life of about 2 years versus 5-6 of my previous Red Top Optima battery. CC amps are lower at around 200cc to 320cc depending on the Deka chosen.
