i'm planning to get my self a macbook since i can afford it at the moment.
After couple months getting tired of my dell xps laptop that is so slow for photo editing and getting tired of all this virus and trojan horses....
My friend let me use his macbook the other day and after playing around with it a little bit, i'm sold.
The questions is, is there anything i need to look for when i go and get one? what's the difference between macbook vs macbook pro? is 1gb enough for surfing the net and do photo editing? ....... Should i buy extended warranty with it? what's the warranty for mac now?

Thanks

i have the 2.5ghz MBP with 4gb of ram and 250gb HDD 17" HiDef screen with LED backlight.

I LOVE IT!

dont buy the ram upgrade from apple. Get the ram off ebay.. they wanted 400 bux to get to 4gb on the MBP .. i bought the ram on ebay for $80 bux ..lol

like echo said.. if you plan on doing basic computing 1gb is fine.. but if you need to upgrade just dont waste your money at apple upgrading anything.

i would say you will be comfortable with 2gb if using photoshop cs3 .. i opted to max it out just so i wouldnt have to worry about it .. if i needed it.. lol.. probably didnt need it.

I just recently got a MacBook Air for doing some iPhone software/hardware development for my company. I still primarily live in the Windows world, so I have mine setup to dual boot to Mac and XP. With how thin and light it is, it's an awesome laptop for traveling.

I have an old ibook g3 and a new IMAC, the basic one that you can get and it still pwns all PCs. I dont see anything wrong with my MAC, image wise, its clear and bright. I dont do any image editing though, so I wouldnt know.

Get as much ram as you can afford. It will give you a very noticeable speed increase. Don't buy Apple ram, it's too expensive. But don't cheap-out or you'll regret that. A good reliable vendor that sells Apple certified ram is OWC (http://www.macsales.com/).

....no more virus. thank you

false assumption...you might get one or two but not likely...pc's still dominate the market so not a lot of worm/virus/malicious code programmers will benefit from making one so maybe in the near future, but worms/virus do exist for our platform/OS!

congratz and enjoy!

I hate how people stereo type windows, i use both mac and pc.

Ive been running my xp pro for years now, i dont have anti-virus and i never get virus's

People give computer's virus's, not the other way around. If you have enough common sense you will know what not to click on / download.

The only reason mac's are so called "safer" is because windows is 85% of the pc market so hackers want to affect the most people as possible.

Sometime it's depend on your computer too, i went to the same website on both of my computer, and one got very bad virus, the other seem like got no problems.
i like to download stuffs, music, movies, games....and sometime i gets all this viruses......and sometime i forgot to back up my files, and i ended up i lost it all.
And i do alot of photo editing, and i think mac will suit me on that better.

running windows on a mac can be useful if a program you need to use isnt formated for mac. but most programs you can get either format for now.

save your money and dont buy microsoft office for the mac you can get NeoOffice for free which is better. (google it)

I keep all windows programs out of my mac.

NeoOffice is Open office made for the mac. its way more stable than open office.. i got sick of open office and decided to try NeoOffice (from the same company)

works awesome

5.26.2005 News
Clam Anti-Virus (ClamAV Mac OS X) is affected by a command execution vulnerability as described within the advisory. Details within the advisory claim that when a suspected infected file is handled by the program and is not able to be removed ClamAV may attempt to copy it to another location utilizing the 'ditto' utility in Mac OS X. The ditto utility is called in an insecure manner allowing the attacker to include arbitrary commands in the file name that will would be executed in within ClamAV. The most recent version of ClamXAV is 0.85.1 and is not vulnerable, be certain you are running the latest version of this product.

2.16.2006 News
Mac OS X Virus Alert - Sophos Anti Virus has found the first 'real virus' for Mac OS X known as OSX/Leap-A or OSX/Oompa-A. The OSX/Leap worm or trojan is spread via instant messenger forwarding itself as a file named 'latestpics.tgz'. When launched the worm attempts to spread via iChat sending itself to the users buddy list. The application will also try to infect the recently used applications

arent there like 6-10 known mac viruses and like 10,0000 PC ones?

TinyGiant

the ones for the mac usually work with microsoft office.. so if you dont have office it cuts it down to 2-3 known viruses

The Macbook does not have the same video graphics capabilities as the Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro has a video card, wear as the Macbook's video is integrated. If one is a hardcore gamer or adobe suite user the Pro is Ideal. Many intense games will not run on the Macbook. I currently use a Macbook and love it. Don't ruin it with Windows.

guys i need help again. Even though i got a mac for my photo editing but i'm still use my window at work for stuffs.
I just bought a FreeAgent Go 250gb External hard drive. I plan to use this to copy stuff from my window computer and then use it later at home on my Mac like my little 1gb flash drive i got.
But after reading installation instruction, i don't think i can use my external hd for both computer, since the preloaded software is available for windows only.
Question is i really don't need to install any softwares or application on it,
i just use it to copy music, photos, and Software application from one computer to another like my 1gb flash drive. Is it possible?

TinyGiant
12-04-2008, 01:47 PM
it shouldbe fine.. you shouldnt really need software to use an external drive.. if its USB just plug it in and drag and drop.. then when you are at the other computer you should be able to access whats on it..

i think some of the externals come with filemanager software.. that you probably dont even need.

i tried it yesterday, i copy a whole bunch of music, movies and pictures file from my pc at work, and plug it in mac at home, and i be able to open most of everything, but when i'm trying to copy stuff from mac over my xternal hard drive, mac won't let me, even cut and paste, it's still not working.
