View Full Version : cross brace installed [pics]

Finally got around to putting this in. I figure I sell it, I better know what it does first hand. Had to trim my custom audio box back a little, but otherwise it fit well. Didn't use the bottom bar, I didn't see that it did anything to stiffen the system.
This cross brace makes a BIG difference! Somehow, even in straight line driving the rear end "sits down" better over bumps. Didn't expect that.
A few pics for you. It bolts directly into the upper rear seatbelt hole and into the rear seat bracket on the bottom.

Garm,
Is this brace adjustable? Looking at the threads and the nut, I'd assume so.
cali yaris

yes it is, in both angle and distance. Mostly it's lining up the holes and then cinching the whole thing down nice and tight.

If someone wanted to, they could replace the panels if they made the hole in them and put them on before locking it in, just a thought for the potential buyer.

What will a brace like this do differently than mid and rear underbraces on the car?

My guess is chassis and body flex combined, The underbraces are targeting the frame flex
cali yaris

chassis flex mostly -- I think you'll feel much more of a difference with this than underbracing, which basically overlays a single piece underbody anyway.
This can be installed with the back seats in place, I'm hoping Thomas can find his pre-hack pics and post them up.
I'm updating the store now to reduce the price to $399 with FREE shipping included. I have two left.

I think it'd be heaps better if it was welded into the bodyshell.

Don't know. I bought five and they have been sitting for a while -- I know they're pricey but it's a pretty cool mod!

Heres a couple quick pictures of my install , not fully finished yet. Need to trim the interior pieces to clear the seatbelt mounting hardware and make a flat cover out of thin plywood to cover the spare tire hole. Fits good but needed to cut a piece of metal out of the spare tire area to clear the bottom bar . I had an old megan c-pillar bar I added to the top of the "X" for more "mad tight jdm looks" lol . This was able to be installed with the rear seat in place BUT It will not sit all the way back meaning , it won't click into place and might collapse on the back seat passenger in a crash , be warned . It really stiffend the whole car up , its feels a lot harsher on bumps and slides the back out pretty good under tight, sharp, fast turns , I never thought it would make such a differnce. I'll do a full write up with better pictures when i'm done with the install.

nice, nice!!!
It would be kinda ghetto, but you could use some big zip ties to attach the posts of the headrests to the crossbar, if you are worried about the seatback flapping forward...

Thanks Man , the rear seat stays in place , just doesn't lock into place . Doesn't bother me , there is still a back seat if needed and it still feel like normal when sitting it , even though its foward about an inch or two . Its been dumping rain for the last 2 days so I haven't been able to finish the install/ take better pictures .

anyone know if this is better than a saftey21(cusco) 6 point roll cage?
cali yaris
12-04-2008, 10:02 PM
I doubt it's "better". This serves a completely different purpose. It doesn't provide any safety enhancement and isn't for harness termination, it just stiffens up the rear end some.
RacerFreakXXX
12-04-2008, 10:06 PM
well that's what i was going for... because i know a roll cage will stiffen up the chassis i was just wondering if this will do a better job at it
turboyaris
12-04-2008, 11:23 PM
no it wouldn't be better then the roll cage, as that affects the stiffness in multiple directions, the rear cross brace basically stiffens the flex mostly in the rear end making the rear suspension more effective, where as the 6pt roll cage effectively stiffens the entire chassis... and as we all should know.... a stiffer chassis is what we all want, it makes the suspension do its job better... the brace is good for those that want a stiffer chassis, without having to deal with the roll cage getting in the way of the passenger cabin
plus its a whole lot cheaper then a roll cage and diy

$1200? You can have someone make a custom cage, pretty much anything you want, for WAY less than this.

in california everything is cheaper.. it's like 2k out hear on the east coast and the only one who I know who builds them is one of the guys down at e-town. I'd rather pay themoney for the roll cage if it goes around the dash and doesn't require much modification of the interior. However, for the price, you can't beat that cross brace.

ok first of all, ewww... that sort of made me ache in a very deep, very wrong place.
ok, I get the name thing and also if it's less expensive where you are. Plus, they send you all the parts, you just put the thing together -- pretty cool.

finished the install of the cross brace , tightened everything down , enlarged seat belt solts to clear the bars and re-installed plastic covers . Also picked up a nitto rear stb from Garm  fits real nice , just had to trim the plastic strut cap/covers to clear the stb mounts.

wait... so let me get this striaght, you WANT to buy that cusco roll cage? and its 1200$... you do see that that is a BOLT-TOGETHER roll cage, as well as a BOLT-IN... kinda makes it like just a piece of show... The only piece in that that will really stiffen the chassis is the main hoop, which is required to be one piece, and if you are planning on racing, I don't remember the rules, but I don't believe the main hoop is allowed to have seven bends, thats just a little silly. I understand that its there to keep the interior in one piece, but a bolt together roll cage is silly.

travel a little further then e-town and you could talk me into doing it cheaper :)

lol.. as far as I know cusco roll cages are d1 street legal so idk if they would still be legal for track but it does it's job... not as well as something welded into the chassis but i'm not going to be tracking the car too much and not planning on actually racing it.

I'm pretty sure you installed it improperly. cuz when i installed mine last night i didnt need to trim any metal at all.
I mounted the horizontal bar where you mounted the bottom points of the X bars. mounting it this way allows it to clear the metal hump that i am assuming you trimmed.
not sure about trimming interior pieces where the seat belts mount cuz i removed my back seat and seatbelts saved a lot of weight, i can feel the difference in acceleration.

whooppeee, I don't think you can install it your way AND keep the back seats.
Jay got it installed with the seats in place, and as far as I could tell that metal hump will get in the way with that configuration.
