Y'know, this isn't a bad looking car, and is definitely competing head-on with the Yaris ($10-14k). Much nicer than the last gen Accent. MPG isn't very impressive (35 hwy), but it's a good bit roomier with more standard options (like ~gasp~ a tach). It comes in some nutty colors too, like Apple Green and Tango Red. Here are some photos.

I might actually jump ship for one of these. My father-in-law can get me employee pricing, and if the material quality is anything like my wife's Tuscon, it'll be fantastic. The interior pics look very similar to it.... everything in the Tuscon is kinda' rubbery-firm, with super-comfy seats.

The front is a little bland, but I do like the side profile.

Better watch out, Hyundai has definitely moved up in the recent years. Their service and quality of vehicles is very good and a lot of their the new cars are starting to look really sharp. If the Tiburon GTV6 would have been RWD, I would not be in a Yaris. Laugh if you want, but the little Korean car maker is really making big strides.

you are right Ran about the GTV6 however as to the hatch....yikes....it just screams econo, especially the interior....just my opinion on it.

Yup. Their customer service is ranked second in the US only to Lexus (dunno what poll, just saw it somewhere). The front is a tad bland, but that's what body kits are for.
The Tiburon is freakin' hot. If I was going the sports car route, that's what I'd be purchasing also. Supposedly they're making another new body style for 2008!
fnkngrv, it's funny you don't like the interior... that's one of the things I like about it the most (probably because of my wife's car). To each his own, huh? I like it loads better than the Yaris "tower".

If I couldn't get my hands on a Yaris, a new accent was what I was thinking of buying. They are cool looking... But the Yaris are much better looking IMHO. I actually like the tower console design. It took almost no time to get used to it. It took me longer to get used to turn the lights on though (my Prizm had automatic running lights which lighted up during the day and automatically turned on at night).

I'm actually waiting to see what happens with the dodge hornet concept before I buy anything. If they do build it on a VW platform it could also be available with a diesel engine, and that I would definately buy. Assuming DiamlerChrysler is still even in business by the time they get this to market! The american companies are doing horribly bad right now....
The accent looks ok, but at the same price as a yaris I would pick the yaris. It will hold its value better I think. Plus to get cruise in the accent you have to get the most expensive trim, the sport version, which I think puts it more expensive than the yaris.
it look like old EK9 from side. ^__^;;

I actually saw one today on the road (i'm pretty sure), it was quite good looking. Though, on a straight-side profile like the picture, the rear taillight is outlined by the rear door  it doesn't flow well atleast in that pic.

hehe, i thought EXACTLY THE SAME THING..96-00 USDM Civic Hatch EK...specifically the JDM EK9
Hyuandai is turning a lot of heads. The new tiburon is supposed to be INSANE, I've heard rumors of Supra class V6TT or V8..though these are just rumors from avid Hyundai-philes..

Not really a fan of the accent but I do like the look of the Elantra. Reminds me quite a bit of a Saab. Seems Hyundai has a tendency to make a lot of their lines look like other cars. Sonata's looked like a poorman's Jaguar for a few years. Kind of nice if you can't afford the real thing. Their resale value in the US is still horrible. Can buy a 2 year old Hyundai extremely cheap compared to a lot of other makes.

Hyundai should have kept the concept model styling cues. Or atleast produce a 'sport' version.

Looks like a pretty good car, if you ask me.

Dont mind the styling, like my Yaris styling more.

Dont mind the interior consol or stack appearance, better than the Fits or Versa or Rios, but I still like the cooler look of my Yaris front consol area!
If I hadnt gone Yaris, after seeing this new Accent hatch, I'd have chosen the Accent over the Fit, Versa, Rio, Aveo, etc.

EDIT:
I do like its large (by over half) hatch are space though!

That's always a cool little touch.
The interior is fine on this vehicle, I dont think its anything special or exceptionally attractive.
I really think the Yaris interior is very cool and attractive! I call it that 'techno' look. minimalistic, but pretty... interesting.
i find this accent interior a little plain, not harsh, but uhm, cold? Not sure.... something like that.
That said, i dont DISlike it, and there are many i dislike, say, for example, the Aveo interior! UGLY!
We're got lucky on all appearance fronts with our Yarises if you ask me!

I'm very found of the 07 VW interiors! The rabbit's interior looks SICK! Still love my Yaris interior a tad bit better. Yes its obviously 'more cheap' looking, but it has its charm to me!

Post....is......rez-urrrr-ect-ed......*insert brain-hungry zombie moan here *.
Took a test drive Saturday evening! It was a... um... GS, I think? It's the base model 3 door, whatever the name.
As embarrassing as it is to admit, that car freakin' ROCKED. The salesperson let me give the little sucker an 18 mile test drive around some back roads and I-75. Here are my impressions.
Interior: Certainly not the high-tech eye candy that Honda sports on the Fit, but not a bad layout. Simple, to the point, with a few interesting lines. Materials are nicer than my current car, which cost about $7000 more. The plastics all seem quite thick and sturdy in comparison to Toyota's plastics (well, Yaris and Matrix, anyway). I didn't really notice anything about the seats, so I assume that they must have been comfy enough. There was definitely plenty of leg and headroom (I'm 6' even). The Accent doesn't utilize it's cargo space as well as the Yaris does... the Accent rear seats can't fold down completely flat. Stereo sounded pretty good, but would need to be replaced anyway (preset equalizers are lame! ).
Handling: Steering was very tight, and the car responded instantly to input. This model didn't have the sport-tuned springs, but I didn't notice any crazy wallowing through curves. However, I didn't really push it, and I'm used to my Vibe, which also has a reputation for wallowing, so I'm probably not the best person to ask about that. Gear shifting was very easy with the manual tranny... clutch action was much more predictable than the Yaris. The shifter itself felt a bit "plasticky", like there was a bit of flex in the linkages, but nothing that really annoyed, or couldn't be fixed via aftermarket parts.
Engine: O...M...G. The Accent is a freakin' pocket rocket, up to 40mph anyway. I don't know what the power-to-weight ratio is, or the torque, but it's a blast in town! Above 40mph, it's about like any other tiny car. One interesting thing to note was the 5th gear rpms. All my previous 4 cylinders have turned between 3000 and 3200 rpms at 70mph. The Accent turns 3600, which makes it feel like you're pushing kinda' hard. Even so, it's rated @ 36mpg highway, but I have a hard time believing that.
Noise: I've read multiple reviews that claim the new Accent is noisy, especially at higher speeds. I'm here to tell you, they LIE. At 70mph the Accent is literally half as loud as my Vibe, and while turning 600 more rpms. Throughout the rpm range, the engine is just loud enough to hear what's going on under the hood so that you don't need to constantly look at your tach. I didn't notice any road noise at all.
Summary: The 2007 Hyundai Accent 3 door hatch kicks ass! The only thing that gives me pause is the high rpm count in 5th gear, and the possible effect that will have on its fuel economy. It's a very, very strong contender in this segment, and I don't understand why the press isn't paying more attention. :iono:

I'd say the lack of notice all comes down to it being a Hyundai. Korean cars have had a bad reputation and are still overlooked by the general public today. I honestly was on the verge of getting a Hyundai but the low fuel economy was the killer (was another model). With the way Hyundai's copy other styles, they're a great budget car for someone who can't afford the car it emulates. Though, in this particular case, I think the Accent is just rather plain looking. I guess you could say it lacks personality for me. Though the "S" they're getting in Canada is a lot nicer looking with the bodykit.

Yeah, I've read multiple reviews from buyers complaining about rotten mpg (19-28! ), but a lot of those come from new owners who haven't had the car long enough to break it in. There are other reviewers out there that claim it gets much better after 5000-7000 miles.

I'm not sure how the Accent is on MPG. I was looking at the Elantra hatch and the rated MPG for highway was something like 33 on the sticker. Having that 40mpg really comes in handy right now even though I probably could have gotten a really good deal on the Elantra since my sister in law was working for that dealership at that time (though she was at the Ford business). I liked the looks of the hatch because it reminded me of a Saab's and I've always liked that look since I was younger.

Hyundai does have a bit of a reputation problem... and fugly-ass cars like those won't help!
Though you gotta admit, the Tiburon is a very decent looking machine, and not half bad in the performance department.
Do they sell the Sonata in the US? I saw the latest version on a trip to Korea some time ago, if they're a shape of things to come, I dare say it is a very good looking future...
Yaris Revenge
05-02-2007, 10:08 AM
Yeah, we do get the Sonata here.
I never would have considered Hyundai even 2 years ago, but my father-in-law is contracting with them through the company he works for... doing parts and service consultation. He's a hard-core patriot... served in the military, always buys American, yada yada.
And he convinced us to buy a Hyundai Tuscon.
He was so thoroughly impressed with what Hyundai is doing and the quality of their products that he's changed his mind about them. And it's not like they pulled the wool over his eyes... he's been in the automotive industry for 20 years, in the down-and-dirty part that likes to screw you out of your money. So his recommendation goes a long way with me.
And I have to say, the Tuscon has been a GREAT vehicle thus far. We've had it for just over a year and put around $25k miles on it, and it's performed flawlessly (except for the crap stock radio that can't even pick up local stations, but that hardly matters when you have satellite radio! ).
Hyundai's gunning for the big boys. I'm sure you've all seen the commercials now where they're comparing their vehicles to others that cost literally twice as much. They're REALLY looking good in those comparisons.
~YR
Oh yeah, Sam's obsessed with the Tiburon. He keeps asking what I think about them. They're awesome, just not quite my style... I'm more of a goofy hatch kinda' guy.

I seriously considered Accent as my previous car was 03 Tiburon. I had an AEM intake and Borla cat-back exhaust on it and it looked good, sounded good...just all-around well sorted out car.
But dayam, the gas mileage! I was getting MAYBE 22 mpg in that thing (in winter, in summer w/ A/C on was gas guzzler), plus other things I came to not like about it.
So while I think the Accent (or Fit, or Versa) might be solid alternative I'm glad I traded UP to Yaris!!

While some Hyundai models have had a reputation for quality and reliability, the Accent is not one of them. While most of their models, such as the Elantra, have been improved, it appears that the Accent is still lacking. They have a long way to go to achieve Toyotas reliability. As for value, anything you save on the purchase price and then some will be lost on resale. Can you imagine trying to sell an Accent that has 100,000 miles on it? You probably couldnt give it away.
