My big sis want to get an iphone for her xmas gift. She is not att customer. I am. She is currently with Tmobile. The problems is, she want me to buy it for her xmas gift so then she can get it unlock somewhere to use it on her tmobile.
But will it affect the warranty from apple or att? and i heard alot of peoples said that their iphones keep cracking at the back,
My friend he bought a new iphone 3g less than a year and have to return it twice under warranty, problem is cracking.

I already went and got her a itouch, seriously she really don't need an iphone for what, she wanted it because everyone else at work keep telling her to get one.

Yes, unlocking phones basically is against warranty. Apple has been known in the past to "brick" unlocked phones when people mistakenly try to download updates. I don't know if they still do that these days.

Plus, you'll be looking at at least $500 bucks for the phone by itself without contract (and possibly up to $800 if you're buying it already unlocked). Not worth it imo unless you're getting an AT&T contract (with its subsidies that reduce the price of the phone to $200-300).

You must be a rich individual if she's expecting you to buy her one of those for Christmas. My sister's lucky if I spend even $100 on her for Christmas lol.

You can't take an iPhone 3g out of the store without activating an ATT phone line with it, subsidized price or not.

it's either you buy it off of ebay unlocked or activate a line from att or apple store then call att customer service and tell them that you don't like their service and you would want to cancel your account(you have 30 days(i think) of buyer's remorse period, make sure u ask att before signing up those contracts), as long as you cancel it within that 30 day period, you're off the hook and you got yourself or your sister her iphone but u need someone in georgia to unlock it or online if u could find one, to be able to use the iphone for t-mobile!

If you cancel within 30 days you have to return the phone (unless they've changed things in the last two months or so).

i think you're right on this one J...before you could do this but not anymore because they are selling those iphone for a lower price...i was able to get them when they were selling them for regular prices($399 8gb and $499 16gb)...my bad, thanks jkuchta!

anyways, for the OP another thing that you could do is if you know someone who has an att account....he/she could get it for u using their account and of course they have to add all the BS features plan and then after a week or so tell them to cancel those added features...hehehe....or u could just go to ebay and buy them but make sure to NOT buy the iClone! gl!

its easy to unlock the 2g iphone, i upgraded mine to 2.2 before i sold it yesterday. it was jailbroken and unlocked. the 3g requires the turbo sim to be unlocked. its an overlay sim card to fake out the iphone carrier restriction. didnt like the fact that you pretty much have to purchase standard features to make the iphone any good. like buy an app for pic messaging, video recording, voice dial, camera zoom. lame if you ask me. so i got the g1 now and feature wise is totally sweet, android is going to be the best mobile os pretty soon. free apps and open market, its great stuff

i decided, i'm not gonna get her iphone for what, i'm not that rich, i rather spend 600 bucks or so on my car payment, she should understand that.
Beside she know nothing about phone technology, all she know is how to dial and talk. And flash it out in front of somebody. I'm just don't like them women working with her, they all got iphones, and know nothing about it, beside listen to music talking and taking pictures.
I think a person who go out and buy an iphone without knowing to use all their features is just a waste of time, and money. It's just like you buy a corvette and doing 60mph on a highway.
I talked to att CSR, and since i'm a att customer, i can upgrade to 2 years agreement, get an iphone for 299 or 399 depend on 8gb or 16gb, and then i have to sign up for data plan for about 30 bucks a month and if i don't like it i can cancel it after 4 months? but in that 4 months i am have to be the one using it. i mean the iphone.
Unlock or quit using it will not cover under warranty by apple or att. But i think this is BS
Since the new 3g iphone having cracking problems on 50% of their phone, i think it's not worth to buy it.
Thanks for your comments.

iPhone is overrated and overpriced. And I despise the fact that US cell phone companies always make these exclusive deals with manufacturers.

I buy my phones unlocked from overseas so I can put any SIM card in it that I want to. That's the only way to go. Sure it costs a lot more, but I have the freedom to choose my carrier and can get some models that aren't offered in the US.

Here's a link to my current phone and it does everything:
