5K maintenance

Okay, I just hit 5K miles and my little maintenance light came on. I presume it's tied directly to the odometer? Anyway, I've misplaced my manual. What is called for at 5K miles and can it be done somewhere other than the dealer and still get the light shut off / reset?

Yes, you can have it done anywhere and the light is easy to reset.

Just as a suggestion. You should have some of your oil changes done at the dealer to allow a set of currently trained "Toyota eyes" to look at your car.

My local dealer actually charges less for the lube, oil & filter than the local jiffy lube/speedi lube....... and my dealer washes my car too.

I don't let the dealer wash my car....that is a scary prospect. when they washed/prepped my wife's Scion they scratched the hell out of it. So much so...I had to go back and have the body shop buff them out.

5K miles should need no inpsection other than stuff that you could easily do visually. Don't forget...this is a Toyota. It'll go forever and unless you abuse it.....you are way early for any window of failure or play in semi-critical to critical parts. Clear the light and keep on motoring!

I dont seem to have this maintenance light on my Cdn 08 Yaris,could it be you are referring to the Check engine light?if so you could be getting a warning of more than just an oil change..It would also be a good idea to find that owners manual and read it as there is a ton of informative reading to be had,at 5k its probably still in the glove box.

My light came on at 4500 miles...anyone else's come on early? And I have a friend of mine that works in the service department at a dealership...so my services only cost me a couple pitchers after he's done....BOMBDIGGITY!!

I did the 5K scheduled maintenance at a little after 3K, to get rid of the original oil sooner. I was able to do it all at home, my husband helped me out and taught me how to do it, it was much easier than I thought. Just changed oil, rotated tires, inspected the breaks and made sure all fluids looked ok, that's pretty much all you need to do at 5K according to the manual.

It starts to flash at start up for about 10 seconds every 4500 miles. After 5000 miles, it will come on and stay on.

This is light is only on the USA Yaris.

Our light flashed around 4500 miles then stayed on. Ususally do own oil changes but since dealer does it for free, took it back to them for this. Of course, they rotate tires and charged 21$ for that. They top off all fluid levels and do general inspection. So no hassel of doing it myself and did not mind the 21$ fees.

The Toyota dealer here was honest enough to tell me that they use bulk oil, even though my 5K oil change was going to be on the house I told them no thanks. Besides changing the oil and rotating the tires at 5K I cleaned my battery cables. Already had a good acid buildup on them, brushed some silicone grease on the cable ends and posts, no more problems now with the corrosion.

What oil should the dealer be using in the cars?

He will probably be using a known brand of non synthetic oil that is pumped out of 50 gallon drum,probably a Castrol product.
You could ask him to put in Synthetic,in which case he will use a known brand from quart containers probably Mobil1
He will probably be using a 5w-20 or 30 weight oil.

...uh, how 'bout Toyota oil, at the Toyota dealership?
Salesman said it sure wouldn't be that, probably figure on it being Pennzoil.

Free? They're trying to charge us 70-80 bucks a pop for their 5k maintenance "special." I feel sorry for the folks who depend on dealerships for maintenance needs.

That's what the salesman told me: bulk Pennzoil

I just think it's really odd that I see nothing but *Toyota* oil when I'm in the parts department, and when I say I'll try some of that when you change my oil, I get told bulk Pennzoil is the only oil available in the service department.
