Went to the Mom n Pop hardware store in town asked them to cut me an ilco TR47 key blank.
Cost $2.50.
The look on my face when I saw it actually worked; priceless....:w00t:
Don't spend $12+ on a dealer key if you don't need to.

I could have told you that lol. I used to work at a car stereo shop and am very familiar of the builds of the transponder keys and their builds. Actually, the cost of an actual transponder key is a lot more that $12 so right there that should have told you that a regular blank key at a hardware store would work.

I got one made using an Ilco key as well when I bought the car and keep it in my wallet. Just for those days that I used to forget the key in the car and lock it (luckily it was only in the driveway where I could get the Toyota spare). Then I installed keyless entry which made everything a lot easier.

Thanks for the input:thumbsup:
I had asked a friend of mine who works at that same hardware store if he could make me a key. He went through his catalog and it stated it was a key with a "chip" and that he could'nt do one for me. A Yari brother posted to this forum recently about the key blank number. I wrote down that PN and went back and the hardware store today. The owner's wife just grabbed the blank and since I told her I'd accept responsibility if it was the wrong part, she did as I requested, and it came out just fine.:w00t:
I just wanted to show that indeed what was posted here is 100% proven and correct.
Not to mention I too wanted a spare key without the huge rubber block molded to the end...
About a month ago my Dad shelled out $15 for a 2003 Tacoma key....from the dealer....

i installed a compustar alarm myself and got to look at all the wires dealing with the ignition. None of them related to a transponder, so I found that out the fun way.

I did get my key duplicated with the same blank and apparently the kid working at customer service seemed to think he knew my car better than I did and kept saying it wouldn't work since theres a transponder. $4 later he gave me a poorly cut key that had to be wiggled around to turn the lock and start the car. No refunds or exchanges sucks, but at least if I lock myself out of my car again I have another key

Thanks for posting that information. That caused me to do a search for
ilco and came across this:

http://www.kaba-ilco.com/key_systems/literature/literature_grid_key_blanks.aspx?id=55

look on page 61 of this pdf:

http://www.kaba-ilco.com/key_systems/key_download.aspx?File=2008_auto_truck_cross_refer ence.pdf&Attachment=True

I'll have to dig out the car manual, because I can't remember what the
salesman told me about the spare key they gave me. I have the factory
keyless entry, and obviously the spare key doesn't have that on it.

Nice find!
BTW, the "P" stands for plastic head. Non "P" is an all plated brass key.

why spend $12 on a dealer key? they over charging you? I had a duplicate cut from Toyota (because I locked my keys in my car) by my VIN and it only cost me $3 for the black top key

Mabye they did it cheap for you as a courteousy?:iono:
Cheapest "Dealer" key I ever bought was $4.50 for a '97 Satty SL2.
BTW, the power pkg. has a neat feature that WON'T let you lock the doors when the key is in the ignition. Pretty cool. The solinoids pop open the locks as soon as you hit the "lock" button OR try to manually lock the doors.
This feature can save one from having to buy even more spare keys....

I did not have the power package on my Yaris.... but I am a Commercial Manager at Autozone..... so they probably gave it to me at wholesale price

Yaris's in my region are not made with a computer chip key and I thought it was that way for the whole USA. I got spare keys made at Wal-Mart for $1.16. That little plate with the numbers on it are for if you loose all of your keys. You take that plate to the dealer and they can use that number to re-create your original keys. Thats why they say to take that plate and put it into your wallet or somewhere in your house.

I keep that plate and the key together at home, never used them yet!:smoking:

The guy at the hardware store said it was not doable due to the "chip" issue. He's not a pro locksmith and was just telling me what the book showed.
Dealer parts tech. just took the old OEM key, cut the new one and announced price. They (dealer) never stated it was a transponder key. The key was for my Dad's '03 Tacoma, not my Yaris.
The dealer was Middle Island. They are good, they never jerk my Dad around over any warr. repairs.
I would have bought from them, but they had like one Yari on the lot when I went shoppin'...

Is that the same owners as Atlantic in West Islip and do you and your Yari represent them in shows then?:iono:

i thought this was all figured out already ??

anyways.. all 08+ cars from Canada have a chip. It doesn't matte if it's a 9000$ hyundai or a 50000$ Lexus... it's a law in Canada since 2008, that all new cars are to have a chip in the key.

By the way.. the TR47 is sofa king ugly.... the TR47P has plastic on top of it.. looks more OEM.

They did'nt have the "P" version. The key I bought stays on the key rack at home with everyone elses. It's basicly the "I lost my keys, can you bring me the one on the rack" phone call key.
It fits the bill and has my name on it since we all drive Toyotas (3).
BTW: where did you get that neat caliper keychain?

09's do as an option that is part of the power package (see the exerpt from my car's build sheet below).

When I installed my remote starter, I received the wrong key bypass module, but I went ahead and installed the remote starter while waiting for the correct one. Just for kicks I triggered the remote starter without the bypass module and the car cranked for about 5 seconds without firing.

Power Package: Includes power door locks, .. 1580.00
power windows, power outside mirrors, ......
60/40 split, reclining, sliding, fold-flat .
rear seat, AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA ....
playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, .
