Hi Guys, need your advice here.
My Yaris is experiencing some weird sounds during braking. A "TOK" sound comes up during stop and go driving (less than 8kmph), This does not happen at high speed braking.
Im driving an automatic by the way
Hope to hear your advice!

Like, TOK and thats it?
Or TOK TOK TOK TOK TOK TOK TOK TOK?
How old is the car? How many miles? How many times have you changed the brakes?

Sounds like a brake pad thats lost its retention spring and is rocking back and forth.

Just one Tok!
Car is 18 months old, 22,000 km. This has been present ever since.

If it is a repeatable problem just bring it in to the dealer and get them to look at it. There's still warranty on the thing.

Have you had your rear brakes cleaned and ajusted yet. Should be done every 10k miles. Or sooner. Otherwise that is your problem. Brake shoe lining has excessive travel to the drum. Clean all the dust and dirt out of the drum and off the backing plate. And properly lubricate the backing plate with brake grease and i garentee your problem should go away.
Notice i used the word garentee and should in the same sentence. =)

But if he said this has been happening since the beginning, it is not likely the problem. If it started suddenly you may be right but i don't think that is the case...

I recently discovered another "TOK" sound.
This happens when i step on the brake pedal and turn the steering wheel to the left it produces a single "tok sound" after that it doesnt produce the sound anymore no matter how many times i turn the steering to the left. It only reproduces the sound when i let go and press the brake pedal again and do the same procedure. The sound only comes up when in total stop.
I also notice that my steering wheel is a tad harder to turn to the left compared to the right.
What can be wrong with this?

Mine's been doing the same thing. I got behind the front wheel with a flashlight and discovered a rock in the hollow part of the brake rotor. I could see it through the vent holes in the backing plate. It only makes noise at low speed because centrifugal force holds it outward when the wheel is spinning faster.
I think I have to remove the brake caliper and pull the rotor off to get it out. I'm not sure how it got in there, but I have a gravel driveway and packed snow may have forced it in.

My Yaris had this "Tok" noise at under 20 Km/hr at braking. The noise wasn't continuous. It only happened immediately the brake was applied. Had a technician checked and found the noise was from the metal part between the brake pad and the calliper. With some lubricant, the noise went away. Just a reference for anyone suffering the similar problem...

Usually this tok sound is due to the brake pad hitting the caliper braket. Sometimes the hardware is weak and there is too much space. Bending the hardware usually works or simply replacing it. Had happend to a brake job my shop had done awile ago. We finally figured it out when i noticed the hardware was there on one side but missing on the other. Allowing excess place in the brake pad. So when the vehicle would roll forward and brake you hear a loud tok. Asumming yours is a simular situation putting grease would take up the slack and act as a dampner for the vibration but would eventually could back. It is strange that you do have this problem on a new car.

i think this is exactly my cars problem :frown:
If i let this continue, will it have any long term negative effects?
What hardware do i need to replace?
thanks!

There really isnt anything bad that will happen just a continuing annoying noise. It is not too hard to do thi syourself. There are several DIYs on this forum that show you how to remove the wheel and brake parts. If you want to try it purchase a brake hardware kit that is the exact name from any local parts house such as kragens autozone, napa auto parts, winchester auto parts, etc. Replace all the hardware and then regrease the components. Put brake lube on the back of the brake pads and on the ears. More than likely this will fix your problem.
If you cant find a brake hardware kit you can try to remove your old hardware and bend it slightly to make it a tigheter fit for the brake pads.
