View Full Version : READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL!!

There seems to have been a rash of threads lately with questions that could have been easily answered by reading the owners manual! I am not going to point any particular issue out, but I am sure most of you know who I am referring to.

So, I just want to throw this reminder out there--especially for those who are newer drivers or who don't have a lot of experience with cars--READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL!

There is a lot of good info in there on how to drive the car and where things are located. The Yaris is not an overly complex car, but it does have some unique nuances about it that are explained in the owners manual. It is not a novel, and I am sure everyone can learn a thing or two by reading through it a few times (you never catch everything during the first read).

And if you can't find your answer there, then by all means ask here; but much like searching the forum, reading your owners manual should be something you do before ask a question.

Cheers! M2

YarisWorld crib notes:

The jack is under drivers seat

No, it's not annoying the speedometer is in the middle

See the stickies in the fuel economy thread if you don't know what DFCO is, no more reposts!

That's what she said

If we throw out everything that can be answered in the owners manual,
then throw out everything that can be answered in a search'
then throw out everything thats been posted before
Whats the point of the forum?

I'm not sure why we want to lessen the amount of forum activity by eliminating questions that people have. I have no problem answering questions I find to be easy questions. Just don't comment on the thread if you don't like it and we will all be fine. :iono:

How many threads can you possibly make about where the jack is? There has to be a cap somewhere. I'm suprised so many people are willing to answer those questions around here - it's nice. But other forums eat newbs alive, and I think rightly so. It keeps the forum clear of junk, and keeps pertinent, fresh, interesting material around.

This forum isn't an interactive owners manual... It's for posting up your projects, mods, tips, etc. about the Yaris.

actually, what might be a good idea is to have a proper Yaris FAQ that covers a lot of these, well, frequently asked questions? Including questions which are not covered in the manual, such as, which is better, the sedan or lb?

I sadly do nto have the time to handle that myself, anybody wanna volunteer to lend a hand?

I'd be willing to tackle this and make a downloadable word .doc or something, or make a good post and sticky it. Put up or shut up I guess. =]

Let's start brainstorming right now. I think we could do this in a funny manner - things like, "Finding your jack and you."

The jack has to be number one.

We could do one on how to shift properly with the automatic.

Talk about warming the car up properly, and why it won't shift properly until warmed up.

The blinking gas light when approaching empty, and the importance of not running empty.

A short word on fuel economy, DFCO, tire pressures, etc.

How to properly use the rear center seatbelt.

How to fold down the seats if you have 60/40, and flipping over the flap.

The rear windshield wiper mod should be thrown in there, too.

What else gets brought up a lot? I only focus on LB stuff because, well, that's what I own. Any sedan owners out there wanna help?

The same people who don't / won't RTFM will also miss the FAQ's and haven't heard of a search engine so get used to answering the same questions over & over ...

Well you see, we need a document to point people to so we can do funny things like that, lol.

Question:

How does one go about starting the Yaris?

Yes, we've had questions that obvious! Read the manual!

Last I checked, the manual doesn't cover superhargers.

Really? Someone mentioned the proper automatic shifting. I didn't know there was a proper way to do it. Hit the gas and go?

The recent thread about someone who drove the car in 3rd since day one and complained about a noisy engine and bad mileage. So proper automatic shifting is actually putting it in DRIVE!! Imagine these people driving sticks!

LOL. Oh my..

i've already seen 3 people on the yarisworld forums who had been driving in 3, instead of D. It happens. I am in the rental car service industry, and many people complained about the same issue as well without knowing that they've been driving in 3 all weekend long. :D

oh my! lol driving in 3? I haven't driven an A/T up until about 4 months ago.... I go to get in my gf's versa and still find myself trying to put the clutch in on an A/T, force of habit I guess....

3 and D are seperated by a slight tap on the Yaris. It's a somewhat common thing for those not used to the car to have it in 3 for at least at moment especially since they aren't used to looking at the dash and don't notice the gear icons there.

The first Yaris I drove was an auto that I picked up as a rental at the Tampa airport one night. It took one glance at the instrument panel to realize there was a gear indicator there. Even driving at night in an unfamiliar place, I had no problem driving it, even downshifting into third to see how the engine would respond.

I can understand maybe not noticing for a moment or two; but to drive around for more than a few minutes without realizing it is beyond comprehension to me. Honestly, it scares me to think these people are operating a motor vehicle in traffic on public roads!

Actually, the way people drive around it, I guess it really doesn't surprise me...

Cheers! M2

maybe your comprehension skills should be the thing that is questioned?

Yeah, let's end the shifter talk. We don't want this thread locked.

I did a search of threads in this forum about reading your owner's manual, and there are quite a few. Before you posted this thread, you should have done a forum search.

Well, if you have been around here for more than two posts you might realize what I am talking about. But you are already proving yourself as probably one of the people this thread is targeting...

1) the fact that a mod posted on this thread means nothing

2) that was before the thread turned into nothing but talking about the person who drove in 3 in their a/t

anything else i seemed to have failed to notice?

ok lets all agree to disagree, there will always be people who will want to have things drop to them from the sky without making any kind of effort and there will be people who look first and then ask. MadMax although i agree with you, i believe you are wasting your time and energy trying to educated some people. just do what you do and mother nature will take care of the rest , if you know what i mean. Now all of you add to my FAQ so we minimize the duplication of trivial question

I think the FAQ is a great idea and from what I've seen it's coming along well

The moderator in question went to bed after posting, but indeed this thread is now pretty useless
