View Full Version : the 20 dollar rear shock tower brace.
getting bored and was looking for a rear shock tower brace.the only one i found that i like is the c-one brace but to expensive .so i went to sears to see what i could come up with,to see if it is worth spending the dollar on one.
i bought some nuts and bolts, washers, aluminium and the bar you see.
well i have to say even though this only took 30mins,it works its harsher on bumps but more secure at speed on the highway and on and off ramps can be taken at some speeds we should not talk about.i think i will keep this on for a while and save my money for some power.that zage turbo kit is looking better everyday.

Aren't there some cheap ebay ones that would look a bit nicer?

Brilliant, except that you're bolting to the top of the shock, and the shock is still mounted in rubber at both ends. A "brace" with 1/4" or more of flex at it's mounting points isn't much of a brace, is it?

You could have those plates welded to the chassis.
Then paint the plates and bar... and it would look good.
Just a thought.

I think his end plates are aluminum, they wouldn't weld well. But, yeah... that IS a good solution. Weld or bolt a steel bracket to the CHASSIS, not the shock. Then you've got something solid to mount a brace to.
And I don't want to come off like I'm bashing anyone. I think it's great when people try to come up with cheap and effective solutions. It CAN be done. But, in this case, the cheap solution is a copy of what was a poor design to begin with.
You should have spent alittle more...Here is my rear brace that I made up.

^^^ Those bars look great!!
I like how you can still maintain the rear cargo space.
Are those solid mounting points on the back?
I just had a vision... Since I roll with out back seats... I could use a bar like that one and then add some kind of a net from the bar to the floor. So I don't have all my stuff running around the back..

Great looking bars, TKO!
Do you think that a similar design could be accomplished for the Yaris? That way the rear area's functionality would be retained.
I'd even go the extra mile and weld some extra hooks in there just for hanging bags and such...

Sure...I used the mounting points for the slide out cargo cover. The weakest point at this moment is the spacers I had to fab cause, I need to bring the pocket that the cover sits in out flush. I'm still messing around with a few different options on filling that pocket.
This is the pocket I'm talking about...Yaris has one right?

Same but with the spacer in it...

if you take that rubber bushing out then you will see that there is metal inside which extends out the bottom that keeps it in position in the chassis.so side to side it is pretty stiff, the rubber mainly absorbs up and down movement for ride qaulity. an extra brace on the body would not hurt though.

You are forgeting 2 important points.
1 The shock is still mounted in rubber at the bottom
2 A shock by definition is NOT a LOAD BEARING member of the suspension. Bracing it, even if solidly mounted does NOTHING.

The Yaris only has the rear bolt exposed. The one right behind the rear seat is covered up by plastic paneling, but I'm pretty sure the bolt is pretty much in the same area as yours.
I'm getting really interested in this mod all of a sudden. Is there any chance that you'd like to fab a few of these for fellow YW members?

What the heck. how did you make those. Come make some for me =).
I got the steel from a metal supply store. Think of it as a home depot...but all they carry is metal. And to bend them I used a harbor freight tubing bender.
I could make them...But I don't have a yaris to use to fab it up. But, most likely, I have one before summer next year.

The both of you always tend to do this. I know you are not "intentionally" trying to flame but the end result is, you are. Throw a tension gauge on and I'm sure that the flex is much less with, than without.
Great job on the brace kou:clap:

Toyota already gave us sedan owners a rear strut tower brace. It's call a rear window deck and has features like speakers holders, rear seat back latches, rear glass, etc, already integrated.

paint it black and it will look better. Looks cool though. If you feel difference, what more could ask out of $20??

I believe the C-One rear strut brace is the only brace I've seen that mounts solidly to the chassis (from the ones I've seen). You do not use the rubber shock upper mounts when installing this bar. It is designed as a solid mount with a machined cup that fits snug in the chassis hole. This design will help reduce chassis flex.
It can also be argued that this design is also flawed since it doesn't allow for side to side play or twist in the shock shaft which can lead to premature shock wear.
Notice the end cups at either end of the brace:
