Highlights of my late night commute back from the city... I did go a bit faster than usual for the purposes of this video, but I do always enjoy screeching around onramps if they are clear of traffic

Very nice video Thomas. You have pretty good street there. I hope I can go that fast. Here, in Venezuela I have to be looking at the street trying to avoid hole, our street sucks!!! Hole everywhere. Can I get all those hole in my GPS? LOL.

So, is there a speed limit or are you ignoring it the way you're flying by everyone else? lol
That was neat. I didn't realize your steering wheel and driving were on the other side of the road. =) I saw more big cars than I exptected...not sure WHAT I was expecting, really! It's very cool we get to see that...some of us wouldn't otherwise.

How fast were you going? And the ride looks a little brutal. Do you visit your chiropractor a lot? LOL.

Ah the highways are pretty smooth, different story for surface roads
So, is there a speed limit or are you ignoring it the way you're flying by everyone else? lol
The official speed limit on that highway is 80km/h (50MPH). Maybe one out of 50 cars actually follows that  I do normally drive around 100-120 (60-75MPH) but I wanted to show off a little for you guys
There is sporadic radar gun enforcement, but not in the middle of the night...

Pickup trucks are probably the most common "big" cars here, they're cheap a there's less tax on them.
damn, thats a rough lookin suspension/wheel setup...
Hahahhaha sure is  Which is why I really wanna get some 15/16" wheels soon...
How fast were you going? And the ride looks a little brutal. Do you visit your chiropractor a lot? LOL.
Max I reached in that video was 160km/h - 100MPH
Cool video Thomas, thanks for sharing your commute with us.
What camera mount are you using?
Gorillapod wrapped around the upper seatbelt holes in the seat  that's why it's not soooo solid!
you crazy Frenchman you're on the wrong zside of z road!!! cool vid Thomas!! very nicly filmed. btw you have a warning light on
That would be my driver's side airbag warning light, as I no longer have an airbag there
sure -- Google mosh!
What's the rightmost red gauge doing? looks like it's moving up and down a lot -- beginning of the vid.
narrowband A/F ratio... not quite as accurate as a wideband one but does give some interesting information (at WOT, it stops dancing and stays pegged around 12:1-11:1, and in DFCO is just drops to maximum lean and stays there)
Hey Thomas... I like your location for your GPS... I'm stealing that!
I stole that from cleong, it's really ideal! though it does expose the unit to the elements when you open the door...

What the heck happened at the end?! My head started tilting to the left as if trying to get the camera to straighten up...

too much G forces man! My head unit has an accelerometer, and if it is not inaccurate I often get up to 0.95 lateral G's there

Welcome to the unofficial autobahn
Let's make it clear before anyone complains, that I do not condone speeding and driving dangerously

fine, I'll go drive on the right side tonight then and see what happens
Gotta find the charger for the camera and I'll take an opposite video: hypermiling 101

Actually..... if you point the video to the rear and shoot it with a mirror to the front it would be correct.
Screw Hypermiling 101....... it's not as much fun and you know it!

Thomas, how big was the original video file. I'm playing around with my camera mount and am trying to make a video.
It was recorded on a MiniDV camera, I have very little experience with those, but when I transfered out the original footage on my hard drive, it came to a 7GB uncompressed AVI file for about 16 minutes of video
That being said, recompressed to MP4 (h264 ftw!), at 640x480 resolution, the final 9-minute video was a little over 100MB
in-car video recording is addictive
LtNoogie
12-21-2008, 03:15 AM
Thanks. I filmed a short 3 minute video on my digital camera which is stored as an 640x480 AVI file. I'm guessing that there's little compression because the darn thing is 141MB.
Once I transfer this to YouTube, I'll try to recompress to MP4 to see how much smaller it can be.
Do you know if YouTube FLV keeps the same level of compression or do they compress?
eTiMaGo
12-21-2008, 03:44 AM
Well, they took a pretty darn long time to process the video after I uploaded it, so they certainly recompressed it.
This should be good reading:

Thanks, that was a good read. I just uploaded a 28MB MP4 version of the recording but when I played it back on YouTube, I did not like the quality. I'm uploading the 141MB file right now and will compare the two before I post my own thread.

12-21-2008, 03:56 AM
hmmm I just noticed there's a "watch in high quality" link below my video, loading it now, wonfer how big of a difference it makes...
edit: it's about as sharp as the original uploaded video

Nice vid! How'd you get your tach lights to pulse like that?
eTiMaGo
12-21-2008, 04:42 AM
I think it's just some kind of interference with the video refresh rate due to the PWM dimming, they're quite steady to the eye
