Has anyone fashioned brake cooling ducts for the LB?

I have a set of LB foglights that I recently purchased but now instead, I am toying with the idea of fashioning cooling ducts for the front brakes via the foglight shroud. This would be to support track days should I ever start racing the road coarses.

1. Has anyone built cooling ducts themselves and have pictures of how they did it?

2. On rainy days, wouldn't ducting from the foglight area potentially spray water droplets on your front brake area? That can't be good.

Your brake rotors get drenched every time you go through a puddle, it's not a big deal. (well, it CAN be a big deal if you're on a race track and get the brakes REALLY hot, then hit a puddle... that could crack a brake rotor... but not an issue for street driving)

I thought I posted about this somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it... oh wait... the forum crash. Yeah.

Anyway, I ran 3" dryer duct straight back from the foglight holes, cut a hole in the fender liner and the results were very good. I ventilated the foglight covers, and the ducting is held in place with zip ties.

I used to get a lot of brake fade at the track. Now I don't.

Thanks Loren. On the third picture, it's hard to tell from which angle you shot the picture ...behind the left front tire? Was there much thought as to the aiming of the duct or was the thought just to get any forced airflow onto the rotor?

I also assume that one needs to take care to route the hose so that water does not collect in the tube.

Third picture is in front of the RF tire. The end of the duct is cut at a slight angle. I did orient the duct to point just to the inside of the tire tread when the wheels are straight. The point was to cool the brakes, not the tire tread. :smile:

It's an aluminum tube, I'm not worried about water collecting in it. Never gave that any thought at all.

I'll be doing the same thing once the foglight shrouds get here from Canada. The pilot shop at Brackett Field (in Pomona) has high temp ducting (the orange silicone stuff) by the foot if anyone is interested.

Now, I just have to sell the LB foglight kit I just bought.

FWIW, I didn't use the dremel on the foglight covers. Just used a utility knife and somehow managed to not cut off my fingers. It's soft plastic, cuts fairly easily. A high-speed Dremel is going to have the tendency to want to melt the plastic and make a mess.

The Dremel I have is variable speed -- shouldn't be a problem.

Don't waste your money on the silicone stuff until you perfect your tube routing. If your rim or tire hits it, it still gets destroyed.

Get the RV waste tubing in the RV section at Wal Mart. It is a few bucks, and one tube will probably do both sides on a Yaris.

I have to replace it occasionally on my Cobra. The cheap tubing holds up to the temperatures just fine. I have no need to go to the expensive stuff.

largeorangefront-how is the tubing held in place in front of your brakes? is that a custom bracket you made?
