Very nice. I've tried to do some of those tricks with my Yaris. It has too much lateral stability to "drag" around corners and will not "drift" at the speeds I drive. One of my friends was watching me play around on the parking lot one evening and said, "You're complaining because you bought a good car?"

Hah!!! Now THAT is a gymkhana of the old style! Our club had a guy with a Bugeye that was almost that good. Tape the ebrake button down, a good set of worn crossplies, and away you go. Mind you the 2-turn lock to lock steering and a tough gearbox helps... and a Seven, of course. I haven't seen an event like that in 40 years; they seem to have been replaced by 100mph slaloms...

That is what the English call an AutoTest, loosely related to TLyttle's "100mph slaloms" practiced by the SCCA under the title of AutoCross (which in England implies mud)
I strongly suspect that car had shuttle-brakes, too (one hand-brake for each wheel). When used with a LSD, they were simply amazing.

Yeah, we ran "Trials" over here for awhile, using the same stuff as the Brits, ie, Anglia 93Es and minimal body work. There was no timing, just penalties for incompletion or fouls. What a hoot. For an example there was a film from the 60s (one of the Doctor series?) where James Robertson Justice ends up in a Trials, yelling at his passenger to "Bounce, man, bounce!"... worth the price. We called the independent handbrakes "fiddle brakes".

One of the guys took an old Packard and built a trials car out of it; very successful for all its bulk!

I think that "Trials" with James Robertson Justice must have been a hill-climb. Only time I ever saw anyone bounce. I have a vague memory of the film, but no more.

Hm. We ran 10 Sections (usually) in a Trials, of which 3 or 4 were hillclimbs: pick the muddiest, leaf-strewn, tree-covered stream bank you could find, and point 'em at it. Bouncing by the "navigator" was the only way to get momentary traction... Not the best for the local environment, but that was then!
