View Full Version : I just discovered something about the handbrake

So last night, I went to my car to go to the store. I parked in a spot with some snow/ice on it, but it is my spot. So I shifted the car into reverse to get out, and was expecting the auto transmission to move the car slowly, you know, without accelerating. But the car would not move. So I thought, "maybe I'm on some snow, let me give it a little bit more gas" So I was accelerating more, but my car was not moving, and I serioulsy thought that my tires were slipping on the ice. Then I kepted hearing this beeping noise, the same kind that you hear when you leave your keys in the car and have the door open, as well as when you leave your lights on and open the door. So, anyways, I was hearing this beeping noise, which made me turn my heard forward, as I was looking back. Then I realized my hand brake was on by looking at the red BRAKE light. What a great thing to include in the car! I would've never thought an 'ecocnmy' car would have a feature like this! I am even more impressed with the Yaris now.

Now, if only the yaris would have traction control......

So it beeps when you try to run it with the handbrake on?

Gotta try that myself, I don't remember it ever happening to me...

It does. It's annoying when your trying to use the hand brake in a turn. Other than that its useful in case you forgot that the thing was on.

Mine doesn't.

It might, turn down your radio. jk

Maybe it's an 08 and up thing.

LOL. Must be an 08 and up thing. Glad I don't.

off topic but someone also mentioned somewhere in the threads that it will disengage the governor on the engine if you pull the brake up one click. Can anyone confirm this?

My car is an '08 LB and it doesn't do that.

Or are we talking A/T only?

I wonder if it's a power package thing?

I don't have the power package and mine doesn't beep. Do you guys who 'beep' have the power package?

I never use handbreak while in park... unless on a steep hill.

Somewhere in the manual it says to use the parking brake all the time. I use it all the time, even on flat terrain.

Mine also beeps, I found out once when I was leaving in a rush and skipped putting down the e-brake. I always use it, got used to it from driving a stick.

Mine beeps (this car beeps at anything you do wrong!!!) and I have a 08 A/T Sedan with no power package.

There goes my theory. I have no idea. I know for sure mine doesn't beep.

Well let me rephrase that. I THINK mine beeps but I can't gaurantee it. I always use my handbrake when I park but I never really forget longer than the time it takes me to put my seatbelt on so its possible that it could just be the seatbelt beep.

Mine doesn't beep, but it will someday soon. Sometimes I forget to drop the e-brake before moving

Mine is an 08 LB, without power package, AT and it beeps if you drive over 5 or 10mph I think it is. Get cruising down the road and barely pull it up, it should beep at you.

I forgot to add, my GF's 07 sedan AT beeps too if the handbrake is up. So it's not just an 08 and up thing.

^ pretty sure it is, but I haven't tried it. I have to go up to Laurel later so I'll be testing it coming over the Legion bridge

It beeps?
I drove around the first few days with it on because I kept forgetting and I never heard a sound...

I think you're ok as it happens with only the 2008 I believe.

Detroiter, maybe that's it, you have to be at a certain speed. I only noticed it when I was in motion. And the OP was in gear and trying to move and it was beeping as well. Good catch.

I've been going and pulling my handbrake to slide in the snow and mine hasn't beeped at all. At least been going 15-20 mph.
