View Full Version : A stick shift without a tach?

Ok, so maybe the first stick I ever used was a three on the column. Never needed a tach before but somehow it didn't occur to me that my new 08 didn't have one. Must be why I got the deal on it. Anyhow, what is that thing that clips to the front door post that has gauges attached to it? I could just hook up a tach but I'd like it to be part of the style of the car, not something that looks bolted on. I'd also like some suggestions on tachometers if possible.

ya, usdm non-S version yaris hatches dont have a tachometer...

i think theres a how-to/DIY kicking around the site somewhere...

How to put one in:

And I have seen a few Yarii with small tachs layed into the dash behind the steering wheel.

Why do you need a tach? Just listen to the engine revs before shifts, like you did with your previous 3-speed

+1

My last cars was a fast revving Contour SVT and a modded GTO and I never looked at the tach, and never bounced off the rev limiters.

because a yaris with a few mods will make power to redline....helps to know where that is vs bouncing off the fuel cut

Right....it'll make about as much power as my John Deer lawn tractor. This car doesn't need a tach...it's a commuter.

true, but if you listen to the engine/exhaust note you'll know when that is coming up. in first gear my trd muffler opens up nicely around 5500 rpm and i know to shift shortly thereafter or i bounce off the rev limiter......

ya, i find with an intake it has a nice rasp (akin to the one before lift in an xrs) just before the redline....

but stock stock you'd be hard pressed listening...

heads up display FTMFW!!!

i've always had a tach in the xA but before i had exhaust on it i did hit the rev limiter now and then simply because i couldn't HEAR ANYTHING lol.. i came from a mildly loud 1ZZFE so the hampsterwheel was easy to over-rev

Sorry....but I mean, let's be realistic. This car doesn't have any power.:iono:

My John Deere lawn tractor has 25% of the HP this car has stock. :eyebulge:

lol

ya, so?

know whats more fun than 100hp? 103hp.

seriously man, its an enthusiasts site. you can (/will?) spend a lot of time dumping on people if you shit in their cereal every time they mod their yaris...

sorry if it seems that way. I am just sharing my thoughts and opinions man. That is what a forum or enthusiast site is about. I am enthusiastic btw...I love my Yaris. I mean, I did buy one! I am also realistic about it...I don't know, maybe I am just used to driving fast cars or something but 100HP doesn't get me excited.

ya, i know what you mean...my last car was faster too

but i still enjoy the yaris...its zippy enough

but more fun in the corners than a straight line, thats for sure

but ANYWAYS...i like having a tach in an MTX car....but mine was stock!

My Scanguage II has a digital tach built in. I prefer an analog dial for a more realtime response though.
The scanguage tach tends to lag annoyingly.

and it shouldn't..

but banging a hampsterwheel into it's Rev Limit still is bad for it...

thus the 5spd SHOULD HAVE COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH A TACH..

but toyota is cheap as FK...

I think if I put my A/T into "3" it just keeps climbing the rev ladder. I tried it but stopped since it seemed to keep going and going......

Get the part number for the S cluster.
or why bother? ive been driving without a tach for almost a year and i havnt had any problems. The car has a unique feel. the engine smooths out in the high RPM just before fuel cut. or 28-31 mph.

I have had no issues driving with music full blast balls to the wall.

also toyota is not cheep as fk. you get what you pay for. throughout the years mitsubishi, dodge, toyota, gm, all have been putting out cars with no rev limiters and no tachs.

Same here. I can't hear my revs when my system is bumping.

If you can't drive a MT without a tach you should not be driving....Its that simple.

No rev limiter and no tach? What if some retard over revs and blow the motor? Are they gonna cover it under warranty?

Whether you like what he says or not you have to admit that unless you put in some serious mod money the car is a small economical gutless commuter car that will get smoked by just about everything else on the road, its main forte is mpg not mph.

thats the power tapering off when you dont have mods...and that happens several hundred rpm before redline...

he's insane, of course there's a rev limiter on the yaris
