rattlin door speakers

i think my front door panel speakers are rattling a lil more than i want, will putting some cilicone sealent around the outer edge do anything? or unscrew it a bit and put some where it meets the bare metal of the door panel? :iono:

depending on what the rattle is sound deadening might help. most of the time someone comes in and tells me they have a rattle its usually from the speakers being over playing and blown.

rattles from a car can either be two or more parts hitting each other, OR 1 or more parts resonating to the sound and essentially becoming a one note speaker themselves.

As stated above... if a speaker is played beyond its limits it might start making weird noises. If a speaker starts giving off a rattling/scratching sound.... well, its most likely time to replace it as it will probably die soon (usually a voice coil going bad, or a spider torn).


Silicone can keep parts from hitting each other (not so good at resonating parts)
Sound mat can reduce the amount that parts resonate to the music (does a moderate job at slapping parts).

here is what I would do:

disconnect or disable everything but one speaker in the door you are looking at.
Use a track with a slow sine sweep (better yet connect a function generator and change the frequency by hand). Have the volume control in the lower third (not to loud!)

You will hear, during the track, different parts of the door start to rattle. Now you can pinpoint the exact location and fix it. (use your finger to press on some points and see if the rattling stops.. this way you can differentiate between door or metal - bowden cable rattle).
Do this on all doors - panels.

If the noise comes from the speaker you have a different problem.

I do not recommend using silicone in the car, since it evaporates corrosive gas during curing (acid). Use a polyurethane or acryl based one.

Do you have aftermarket speakers? I had mine installed at best buy and when i removed the door panel the speaker fell out. Needless to say i found the reason for the rattling. And had to reinstall them the proper way.

Fukkin best buy cuts corners like no other. Nah my speakers arent having that prob. I just put my speakers in the stock speaker enclosures and screwed them back to the doors. It soudns beteer now that the interior is back in lol

are the stock speaker enclosures you are talking about the actual cheasy speaker basket? seems alot of people are ripping out the cone on the stock speakers and screwing their aftermarket speakers into the factory speaker basket.

if thats the case...all i can say is...look at how thin the plastic rim on the basket is. then look at the 3 cheap rivets holding the 1/8th of an inch or less of plastic to the door. after that...re-evaluate what could be rattling in this situation...

then either find a pair of stout speaker grills, pop the mesh out of them, and use them as a spacer...or actually go to a car stereo shop, and but $9.99 worth of spacers(sold in a pair), and pop the 3 rivits holding the factory speaker cage in place and install them differantly than bogus-buy would.
