View Full Version : A bad start to the new year :(

So I had my first major accident with the Yaris this morning... I left the office to drop by home, so I needed to make a U-turn. Normally I would keep going down the road to an intersection where it can be done safely, but there was nobody in the incoming lanes, and a check of my mirrors showed nobody behind me. Or so I thought. As I'm halfway across the road, BAM, and I see someone sliding across my hood, I just got right in the path of a motorcycle carrying two people, which I honestly didn't see coming :frown:

Thankfully, the two riders only had pretty minor injuries (sliding on the hood probably helped a lot actually, and they were both wearing helmets, which is a rarity!) but went to the hospital for x-rays and a checkup, then the insurance guy came and we spent a few hours sorting it all out...

But boy do I feel bad about this, I always try to drive in a courteous and attentive manner...

So yeah, the front corner of my car is pretty bashed up as you can see in the pics... and my steering's way out of alignment, 20 degree toe-in is not very easy to drive with... Tow truck's coming tomorrow, then who knows how long until I get it back...

Moral of the story, pay attention!

Absolutely, I am extremely thankful for that, hard enough being a foreigner involved in an accident here.

Actually on a closer look the top mounting tab snapped, but it can probably be epoxied back on :)

"E".....very sorry about this and hope things turn out well for all involved. Mine (accident) was more serious and I think about it everyday. You will also. Best of luck and I hope to see the car up and running in the same glory it was before. Notice I said glory instead of the same as it was because I know some changes will most likely be made.

Just wondering, are U-turns legal there?

have you gotten an estimate on the cost of repairs? Sorry to hear to hear this Thomas, these things are nothing but an inconvenience and always come at the worst time. But I am very glad everyone is ok. Just goes to show everyone that even if you think you are a very good driver, accidents can happen to anyone. I think this saying fits very well in this situation....."Shit happens".

Sorry to hear this but my experience on Monday was a bad one as well....

Well....here is my embarrassing moment of the year. I get the week between Xmas and New Year's off from work as the plant shuts down. Now....one day the temps rose quite nicely so I threw another coat of sealant on the car. The car looked really, really nice and SUPER clean. So....I really didn't drive it all week. I came outside Monday to get into the car and the whol entire driveway was a sheet of ice....I am not exagerating. When I got near the car to get inside, I slipped and fell on my @$$. Now...this is pretty funny for all of you reading....I must admit and actually, even I can laugh at myself BUT the twist to this is that it wasn't just a slip and fall so that my pride was hurt. This fall happened as I was about to get into my car sooooo.....yes, there goes my knee BAM, a perfect 90 degree smack into the rear panel and as I was going down, my wrist/hand also hit a bit higher up on the panel. NOT GOOD!!! I was extremely pissed off because the panel was dinged in two places! I now have to bring the car to the dealership to have the dent magician remove the carnage. Not good at all.....

I am going to snap some once the car is clean....I have road salt on it now. I am going to wash the car before taking it into the dealer and take some before and after pictures. I was NOT a happy camper that day and very disappointed with myself but hey...ice is ice. I know a lot of people had trouble's with cars sliding and some other people had stories of falling. None of which though, damaged their cars.

That's a riot (in a painful way) - I washed mine on the same day and glazed my driveway as well. While washing mine I found out why the rear wiper doesn't pull off the window.

I snipped the tab to allow mine to fully pull off and it makes washing a lot easier. I was washing the rear left bumper and as I came around the back I stood up and took the corner of the wiper square in the eye. I still have a black eye from it and I am dang lucky I didn't poke my eye out. From now on safety glasses are standard equipment during washes...

DOH! Holy $hit that sucks too (and if funny in a painful way)! Man....

I am going to start a separate thread for the work done by dent magician so as to not hijack Thomas' thread here. I have been thinking about trimming the rear wiper cap but after hearing this story...maybe I'll leave it alone because I get into a zone when washing the car and I'd be a PERFECT candidate for poking my eye out when washing the car. Glad you weren't seriously hurt....:smoking:

Not really any legal trouble, but well, let's just say in cases like this it's easy for some people to see a foreigner as a big walking bag of cash

Thankfully it was right in front of the office so my Thai partner came over to help negotiate, as well as the insurance guy, plus the guys on the bike were pretty friendly and not toooo pissed off, so in the end I was extremely lucky.

Similar thing happened to my mom years ago, she was turning in to a parking spot and a dumb lady on a motorcycle was trying to squeeze past, of course ran into the side of the car. Girl got off the bike and told my mom "you give me 3000 baht (about $80)". Lucky there was a cop right there, basically told her to f*ck off

Well I went to visit my baby at the hospital this afternoon... Been over a month and it's not quite done yet. Suspension, bodywork and paint is done, they still need to change the windshield. But the biggest problem is the wheel that got hit is bent quite a bit. It's still in one piece, but if I get on the highway with it, it's gonna vibrate and wobble like crazy. Insurance will only cover the equivalent cost of the OEM wheel, which they quote at about $50

So, I think it's time to accelerate my plan to get some 15" wheels, but I'll need to sell my monstrous front brakes, anyone interested?

Anyway here's some pics, they also fixed up the scuffs, dents and scratches I accumulated over time, so the bumpers are out drying from their fresh coat of paint

19112

naked ass pic :laugh::

19111

You can also see my new front suspension lower arm, the original one got bent pretty bad (guy at the garage could not believe a motorcycle impact caused that much damage) and they also changed the wheel hub, apparently the bearing was busted too:

19110

So, if they can get a new wheel in time, I ought to have the car back Saturday
