Hocus Pocus... Live performance in 1973. Very tight musicianship. Classical training does pay off.

Nice performance....
After listening to that song, I even browsed around and listened to Sylvia... really great songs....

Heh! Thanks for the memories - I saw them at Reading Rock festival (UK) in 1972, and when they did a live show at the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth later that year. Always great stuff.

COOL! There are other vids of them playing in 2000. The singer is an old fart with a hat now, like me. hehehe Not to mention that I can play the guitar part....just not quite as fast. LOL

Some of you were really lucky to see them in their prime.

I did not realize how good these guys are until I saw this video.

Glad that you all liked it.

I really wanted to put up "Kentucky Woman", which made a good song better but had to settle for "Burn".

Their commercial stuff like "Smoke on the Water" is great but Burn has a lot of classical riffs that make it for me.

Very lucky to have these online.

Emerson Lake and Palmer rehearsing Karn Evil 9. They make it look both very easy and very hard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEPeRBXBDEU

No wonder Brain Salad Surgery took a year of studio work... also notice Keith's bottle collection. He probably needed it after a time, trying to build such a work note by note and gesture by gesture.

Eruption from Tarkus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZquiACzPLY

Greg Lake going it alone, sorta ("Still you turn me on").

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssC6Pun5qzQ

Another Lake ballad.. 1997. Fat old farts who never lost their edge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=570W6DKg_Oo

Note Keith's fluid playing. You'd have never guessed he had ulnar nerve damage and had to have nerve surgery to restore use of one of his hands.

Tarkus. I remember, i remember....
They had one of those Tarkus-tanks on stage at The Oval concert in '72, IIRC. Puny little smoke-shots, but great music.

Deep Purple was my first big concert.

I'm not old enough to have seen any of these guys in concert in their prime (Focus, Deep Purple, ELP, etc), but having a brother who was in his teens in the early 70's (10 years older than me), I picked up on a lot of the music. I blame him for my musical tastes primarily spanning the 60's through the 80's instead of being limited to the late 70's through the 80's... and that's a good thing.

Now, what about Yes and some very early (pre-disco) ELO?

Okay Gene you can stop anytime. Dam I miss those days and music.

This is a great walk down the nostalgia road. The songs remind me of what I was doing way back then..... the good times LOL

The AM radio in the car the 8 track player..... then the AM FM 8 track combo which only weighed 20 lbs when mounted!

I think DEEP PURPLE's " Who Do We Think We Are " is their best release . All tracks rock . Then there's Ritchie Blackmore's RAINBOW . " RISING " is all time classic . The debut not to shabby as well .

Gene, I busted Palmer for solicitating a prostitute charge back in 1998 at a Hilton. lol. Love it. Good times. I still have the report somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Gene, could I merge all of these threads into one and then you could just update it every once in a while? It could be the rock nostalgia thread or something... haha.

GeneW

Chino Charles suggested this idea and it's a good one. We old farts and youngin's who appreciate good music can just put up stuff.

So far I've put up....

Mike Nesmith was still noodling guitar with the Monkees when this music video came out from Yes. So this isn't MTV video quality but I think the musicianship is a lot better than most of their "offerings".

Your's is no Disgrace (about ten minutes long, hope your bandwidth is up to it) It's worth it, I think this is a "live" performance, does not sound like the studio version.

Another Greg Lake ballad from I think the "Concert" tour, which almost bankrupted the group. Keith was determined to "give all" to the fans. Here he plays an.... accordion.

C'est le vie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAMneLKSYnY

I am disappointed that there is no live performance of Karn Evil 9 1st Impression, first movement. Would have been worth seeing. Also would have been nice to see a live version of "Still you turn me on" with full keyboard accompaniment.

I guess we're just lucky for what we get online.

You need some greenery to really listen to this music. It's so much deeper than most of the crap put out nowadays. I took greenery to make music like that as well.

everything now has that 4/4 beat and no arrangement. That's why it was so good back then. You could really get lost in the arrangement....and the greenery helped a bit, but you get my drift
