I am curious to know if anyone has any experience with a lightweight race battery in their yaris. In particular I've been looking at a lithium phosphate based unit from http://voltphreaks.com/. I figured that weight reduction would be the easiest performance boost to my '09 LB. Also if anyone has relocated their battery would you mind giving any tips, advice, or just throw up a guide on the board that would be cool. I have a healthy respect for electricity.

Saving weight is good, but...

The Yaris battery doesn't weight "30-50 pounds", it weighs about 20-22 pounds. And, holy fuqu! A $1200 battery???

Try searching for an Odyssey PC680 industrial battery. It's about $100. It's not 5 pounds, but it's about 13 pounds... which is still a significant weight savings. Added bonus: It should last 4-5 times as long as a standard wet-cell automotive battery.

PS: Relocating the battery means adding 5 pounds of wire. Unless you're building a race car and relocating the weight for improved balance is super-important, it's not worth it.

I have also been considering a battery from braille (b106c) http://braillebattery.com/index.php/batteries/b106/ which can be had close to $130. I am on the lookout for another manufacturer of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries that would be a bit more reasonable than voltphreaks.

I sell Braille and have one in my car. The B106 you linked to is really just for a race car, there is no reserve in that battery at all. I have the 3121. Expensive but works great!

I'm going to go weigh my stock battery, I swear it's more than 20 pounds.

[edit] My Furukawa stock Yaris battery weighs 33.5 pounds.

$1200?!?!? IMO, go with Braille.

I sell magic fairy dust for $300.00. That makes your battery and engine weightless.

why is everyone looking at the $1200 battery? they do have one for $899 too ;)

In all seriousness get a braille support a vendor and use the rest of the cash on bitchin mods.

I live in Minneapolis, MN so it gets pretty cold here. It's been below zero at night about ten times already this winter (about -15 has been the lowest so far). I have the Hawker 545 in my car. Installed it about 5 months ago. It has started the car on the first try everytime even at these low temperatures. It's about $100 with shipping, maybe less if you search around. Weighs 10.6 pounds. Stock battery is just over 33 pounds.

Odyssey batteries are very good aftermarket batteries - you can't go wrong with those.

Or you can go to your local Sears and purchase a DieHard Platinum.
Same thing as the Odyssey, only change in sticker.
Great batteries. See them a lot in Audio applications too.

The Sears battery in question is made by Odyssey. It is not "the Odyssey" that we're talking about. It is a full-sized AGM battery. Good battery, I'm sure, but it's the same size and weight as a regular wet-cell battery. Probably great for an audio application where more power is needed without concern for saving weight.
Example:
Sears: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02850090000P?mv=rr
Odyssey: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1500t.htm

The Odyssey PC575 (http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc545series.htm), PC680 (http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm), and similar are all dry cell batteries that weigh about half of a normal battery. This being the "performance modifications" forum... we're all about saving weight.

With that being said, braile would be the best choice imo..

Cali, whats the price on the Braille? Is it a direct swap? What's the warranty and what's the process for replacement if there is a warranty issue (any local retailer support? i'm not into mailing batteries back and forth across the country).

I'm looking to upgrade my stock battery and I want something good. I've had many DieHards and have gotten stranded by more than one so Sears and their horrible customer service is not an option for me...

how are you guys mounting the smaller batteries?

also found that a sears battery is too tall for the stock battery tie down.

We went with an Optima Red Top simply b/c we needed reliability before weight savings and it was the right height for the stock tie down (using the supplied spacers). (that and we needed it Immediately). :)

The Braille batteries come with a rubber tie-down kit. Don't know about the other brands

DUDE it doesnt take that much voltage to charge the car. Try putting together a Flux capacitor, gerbal, Exercise wheel, AAA battery and 6" of wire and your good.
