DIY: Liftback Hood insulator install PICS

Well, it arrived today along with some other stuff.
Here you see the "box" (a folded over piece of cardboard).
Close up of part #.
Baggie of hood clips, you need 5, I bought 6.
Insulator was $58USD , clips about $1USD apiece.

Top and bottom of insulator, it's about three feet long or 94cm.

Pretty foolproof, no skills or tools required.:thumbup:

So it appears this part is readily available in the USA, BUT they are'nt in any of the LB's sold there. There must be a big pile of these things in a warehouse somewhere.....:thumbdown:

2 purposes....

1. hold ambient heat from engine in from escaping through thin sheet metal of hood

2. partial sound deadening.....yeah.....

Keeps inside cabin noise down, protects paint from direct heat of engine, "insulates" like the pink stuff, and may help contain engine fire.
Oh, and did I mention it just LOOKS GOOD too?:tongue:
My old twin cam Saturn had an insulator, my single cam Saturn did not. That used to bug the heck out of me!

It's not a cheap mod for what it is, but it gives a real nice finished look.

Perhaps, but it was bugging me that something was "missing" on the car.
Kinda like when you sit in a car and see all those plastic plugs in all the holes in the dash where all options would have gone....glad I sprang for the power package!:headbang:

All the same reasons I came up with when I changed mine. Main reason I got mine was to maybe help the 3m clear film to last the 7 years its supposed to last, stay adhered and not discolor on me.

I know, it's like a pressed thin piece of fiberglas insulation. It will protect the hood paint and should keep the engine toasty in winter.

Thankfully Sparks Toyota in the US will supply and ship one to me for $US118.00 still exspensive but worth it, if it close's the gap on top of the AFE intake.

Have you noticed much difference in noise level now that you've had it for a day or so?

I think it's quieter, but I installed my AFE intake a day before so now it's tough to comment on that matter.

It works fine with the AFE, no rubbing issues here.
Be advised that insulator comes in a folded piece of cardboard taped shut.
Hope it survives it's long journey.
Don't forget to order the pins too! 5 needed.

doubt it would cut down on noise, it probably does insulate heat more in the winter, and probably more then you'd want in the summer time.

I really hated seeing that bare painted steel subframe under the hood. This seems to streamline a lot and give a nice finished look.
I saw it on a EU owner's car and then I HAD to have one!:bellyroll:

Before installing mine I darkened it by spraying black engine enamel on it. Soaked it right up and looks great I think. You could use other colors too if you liked. There's also a depression beneath the hood right below the one with the hole in it where the hood support fits. I duplicated the hole of the upper on the lower one which holds the hood wide open. Great for repairs. Obviously comes this way in other markets.

I should add that in my 2012 Yaris SE hatchback, the local mice tore off most of this insulation material to make their nasty little nests with, including on top of my cabin air filter just behind the glove compartment. So, I'm reluctant to spend $100+ just to buy them some new bedding material, those rodent bastards!

Yes! I discovered that the VW Golf has nice little mouse apartment behind the strut towers. I was rustproofing the engine bay and discovered the abandoned digs. It was complete with bedding (fortunately not from my car), a peanut shell and other small trinkets. Rodent bastards must be banished!!!
