View Full Version : feeler thread - shifter extension
cali yaris

We (meaning NST & MI) are thinking about offering a shifter extension. Race cars often have longer shifters (the knob is closer to the steering wheel. I've also noticed with our stock seats so high up, the shifter could be a little higher.
A shifter extension combined with one (or both!) NST short shifter kits might be the perfect shifter set up for our cars.
So, here's an interest poll to see if it's worth pursuing, female thread underneath, male threads on top, easy and removable extension to your stock shifter.

I do think 2" would be a modest increase. I fear 3" or 4" would hit the A/C controls. Heck, right now my middle knuckle is close to the A/C switch when I shift to 3rd gear.
cali yaris
01-11-2009, 11:27 PM
My thinking is to pair this up with one or both NST short shifter kits, so your shifter would not hit the a/c controls.

I personally don't see this catching on. You'll sell 5 and it'll trail off after that.
I'd personally like to see an aftermarket replacement for the whole cage. I think the stock pivot point on the shifter assembly is a little low.

Just may be me, but I think the 4" extension would be redundant. Just buy two 2" extensions, screw em' together with some lock-tite, call it good. So, voted for the 2" extension. What's the drop caused by the in-cabin SSK BTW?
cali yaris
01-14-2009, 11:48 AM
the in cabin SSK from NST doesn't drop the shifter at all, it just reduces throw (25%).
This is different from the TWM type shifter which is the whole thing and does lower the knob.

I put a 3" one on my car today. WOW is all I can say. The knob is now in a natural position for all-around and performance shifting. This is one of those "why the heck didn't I think of that a year ago" mods. ESPECIALLY combined with the NST short shift kit.
If you don't have the short shift kit, consider getting both of these items as a package, you will be really glad you did!

an "s" curved one would have to be made in such a way that it tightens at exactly the correct angle. I'm not sure how easy that is to engineer?
ddongbap
01-16-2009, 06:41 PM
You could just include a nut. Put the bolt on first, put the then the extension on. Angle the extension the way you want it, then reverse twist the nut, till it tightens.
Thats how the Skunk2 shift knobs go in the Hondas. Since the Skunk2 was metal, and theres no extra play, like the stock shifter has, the extra nut would tighten the shifter where you kept it. Hope that made sense.

I got the 3" nominal (3-3/4" total) shift extender.
It feels like I'm driving a semi because it obviously makes the shifts longer, but on the other hand, it is less travel for your hand to get from the wheel to the shifter.
The reduced effort is crazy, it's so effortless to shift now :)
I do recommend the shorter one for Echo's, or at least RS's (with the better lumbar seats) - sometimes my elbow gets a bit bunched up when shifting into 2nd.

viperoni,
that is why you get the short shifter kit. I did the 3" extender and the MI under hood SSK and the throw is about stock again. you still get the same movement on the x axis but the y axis is much reduced. basically from 3rd to 4th is a lot beter. I have actually given thought to getting the in cabin SSK to make the throw even shorter. still thinking on that one.
the big rig feel was funny at first but then just got annoying to me. SSK all the way
