The Toyota Alessandro Volta is a concept car developed in the collaboration of the Japanese manufacturer Toyota and the Italian design company Italdesign Giugiaro. The concept vehicle named after Alessandro Volta, the Italian physicist who invented the battery, was officially unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show and it is a study of a hybrid-powered sports car.
The car was built on a carbon fiber chassis and features a four wheel drive hybrid powertrain of the Lexus RX 400h which combines a 3.3-litre V6 gasoline engine with two electric engines. The gasoline engine is fitted behind the rear axle and there are additional two electrically powered engines, one on each axle. The combination develops a maximum output of 300 kW (408 bhp), which enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 4.03 seconds and reach the top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The car seats three people abreast and features drive-by-wire controls. The concept never materialized as a production car due to high costs involved.

Looks very similar to the new LOTUS EVORA.. a Toyota powered, mid-engined, two-plus-two sports car. The Toyota 2GR-FE dual VVT-i engine: 276-hp, 3.5 liter V-6; estimated 0-60 mph in less than 5-seconds & a top speed of 160 mph.
Projected to go on sale this spring in Europe & be launched in the U.S. at the end of 2009. Lotus Evora..$65,000 est.

This is a concept. ANd not to be a downer its not coming out. But I believe its a precursor to the LF-A concept/supercar. It was name after an Italian who pioneered batteries. I don't remember the whole backstory. but anyway this is old!! Since Toyota and Subaru are putting the RWD coupe on hold I highly doubt this is coming out. Considering the economic conditions. I don't know if its confirmed but its rumored that Toyota scraped the LF-A supercar. :thumbdown::thumbdown:

Not really scrapped on the LF-A. It is a test mule for future cars right now. Heck, they have a few race versions for LeMans and possibly Super GT next year.
