Dirty looks

So I got quite a few today for no apparent reason other than being seen driving a Yaris. It was just like any other ordinary day when I would usually be left alone like all other motorists. I wasn't driving crazy and I don't have anything on my car that would cause negative attention, so I don't know what the deal is. Could be because the moon is closest to earth this weekend than it will be at any other time of this year. Maybe it's causing them to act stupid all of a sudden?

Anybody else ever get this?

I usually get, you drive a yaris! Or laughter when people find out what kind of car i drive. But when people see it in person i get. Wow what kind of car is that. Or thats a nice car. or what! you get how many mpg

Kinda see the benefits of driving a sedan now lol.

Used to get compliments too when I first got mine, but of course that was during the big gas hike early last Summer. Some girls I run into still like my "cute car" and it turns into something good later on. The rest of the time I've been considered equal. There have been no problems til today. Could be that people are finally getting jealous of the Yaris? :biggrin:

I have been asked a few times who makes it (I debadged most of my car) or I get "I thought the Yaris was a hatchback" from time to time. People are surprised that when I tell them that the car style isn't from this year, but that it has been out for a while.

yup . One example : a neighbor's buddy pointed at the YARIS liftback and both laughed while sitting in his large GMC pickup :rolleyes: . This was during summer when gas prices were over $4 a gallon . :moon: holes , :biggrin: . Seems like many people that drive larger vehicles like to tailgate or pullout / backout in front of us :mad: .

Have you ever considered the fact that its a Japanese car from a Japanese company that is of quality and endurance and didn't piss off a nation because it had to be bailed out? Therefore, some people are just jealous?

Never had anything negative said to me, most are just in awe of the gas mileage. I get the cute car thing a bit too, which is fun.

PeterPoop, you just gave me an idea. We should all buy a bad ass full-size truck and drive around with the Yaris in the bed. That way when all the haters see us out and about they'll be too confused to frown. I'll take a Tundra...

Some people cannot stand having a tiny little car pass them on the freeway. They will pass you right back and may even cut you off. It happens quite often. Once while going north on the 5 past SF, a pickup pulling a trailer passed me after I had moved to the left lane and passed him. Later when traffic cleared in front of me, I passed him doing 80 mph. He fought the traffic around him and managed to come up behind me after several miles and passed me doing 85+ mph pulling a trailer. I let him go and he continued at high speed until I couldn't see him.:iono:

BTW, never said I gave a damn what people think of my car, or anything else of mine for that matter. Just found it strange that I've had the car for 7 whole months now but people around town chose just this random ass day to sport the dirty looks. If it continues tomorrow I just might have to roll down my window and give them the "Ice Cube look":

I must say one thing though. My father always said, "You will always need a truck, even if just once in a while". For example, when hurricane Ike passed through and took my fence, I needed to borrow his F-150 to pick up the lumber.

I do agree, most live in an urban area and have no REAL use for a truck. But for us that live in suburban/rural areas, or actually work with our hands, then yes a truck is a useful tool (especially if its partially flooded).

Another thing, for us who work in the Texas Medical Center, we sometimes need a truck to get through the "manageable" floods so that the hospitals remain open.

I doubt anyone here would say trucks are useless. They are just horrid commuting vehicles.

Great point, BailOut. IMO it's the American way of thinking, ..or the lack of it. Even though I still love this country, being the "Land Of The Free" has caused alot of us to become indulgent and impulsive (and I wanna say stupid too) with our money. It's like so many of us are conditioned to think "Hey I'm a person of lower class and I really want to get a big truck to show others how much better I am than them. I'll never go off-road, and I can't afford the payments, but it'll still make me feel big and important". Next thing you know, it's "Dirty Looks Sunday" followed by "Repo Day" a month later. So much for those new 22" ugly chrome rims...

Meanwhile the rest of us are living the smart-n-sensible life with our Yaris's and continue to thrive:thumbsup:

For commuting, yeah they definitely useless.

I commute in my 2007 Tundra....... 2 miles haha, but I do notice that people drive more aggressively towards me in the Yaris compared to my Tundra.

Yeah, i agree with every single thing everyone has said! I usually get people in trucks/bigger vehicles who try to go faster then me or try to pass me at extreme speeds to just make a point. But they get pissed off more when i pass them faster :)

i've noticed that since i've had my yaris (march 08) i have not been pulled over (knock on wood) though i have sped by many cops. always got pulled over in the 3000gt or katana600.

I also find that people drive more aggressively around my Yaris.. or just because my car is small they can pretend it isn't there. I get people cutting me off, making turns right in front of me, and speeding past me all the time. When I drove my lifted V8 GMC Vandura with offroad bumpers on it, no one wanted to mess with me, :biggrin:. They would think about cutting me off, or turning right in front of me or whatever, look at my van, and decide to wait. Absolutely hilarious. Similarly, when they saw my van coming at them in their rear view mirror and not slowing down, they got out of the way in a hurry. When they see my Yaris if they do anything at all its slow down. California drivers frustrate me.

My two cents worth -

In relation to driving larger cars or utes a comparison could be like jumping
out of (excuse the pun) a Jumbo Aeroplane and into a six seater Cessna -
when you drive a Yaris you actually feel the sensation of driving.

My own car is a larger Holden Commodore - but I love driving my wifes car
whenever I am "allowed".

Larger cars or utes have their place if your towing a boat,for work or have
a bunch of kids but for more money in your pocket and blitzing others in
shopping centres for parking - GO YARIS.

People are always looking at mine trying to figure out what it is-There is no Toyota name on it and the emblems were replaced with the Japanese domestic market ones. I even get asked at gas stations what is it. Sometimes I tease them and say it's a Japanese domestic market car, but if I say yaris they are like oh, yeah I've heard of them. Funny how much more people recognize names that the actual look. But no dirty looks-more of intrigue.

I just drive slow as hell and confirm their expectations. I stay out of the passing lane and hardly every touch my brakes on a 20 mile commute.

When you drive the speed limit, you constantly have to brake, change lanes, speed up, slow down. I just have to worry about being rear ended by idjuts lost in the ozone talking on their damned cell phones.

People learn to not be aggressive around me. I grew up driving in northeast cities, and just don't care. If you can navigate stopped Boston rush hour commute traffic, anything down here is easy.

I have no problems jamming on my brakes when people tailgate me. Did it to a moron on a bike, the dude was way too close, boy that scared the crap out of him, I laughed so hard.
Just drive at people like you are willing to die, I have yet to meet someone who won't get scared when you try to run them off the road, no matter what car they are driving. Well, don't literally run them off the road, but I've never had to take it that far, and I doubt I ever will. Yes, people tend to let me have my way.
And just to make sure everyone understands, I don't drive aggressively. I am very laid back, and just like torturing people that annoy me. Let's just say I have a massive sadist streak going.

True, Florida drivers are really bad and aggressive, when we lived in Virginia my husband never had trouble when driving his truck (dodge ram 3500), everybody would just stay out of his way, around FL though, people don't care, even if it's a small car that can be easily crushed, they still cut him off.

Fortunately I haven't noticed any dirty looks towards me, but I'm a woman, so I guess driving a small car is not so much of a stigma. It's fun though when people ask about the kind of gas mileage I get. One time a lady even asked me if it was an electric car, I thought that was cute.

One time I was driving on the Hutchinson River Pkwy, cruising at 70ish in the left lane (keeping pace with the flow of traffic). Some douche in a Prius starts riding my bumper in Scarsdale and stays riding my ass until Co-op City in the Bronx when I stopped the car in the left lane , got out and lit into this jerk about tailgating. (Before I stopped I did the brake tap, the nice hand signal, the less nice hand signal, and the universal hand signal). The traffic all the way down was moving but dense, and me moving over was not going to get him any further than eight more feet.

Find it funny how today this one short-looking douche of a guy was blocking traffic in his mini van right in front of me at a green light. I honked at him to get going, but he didn't budged. Instead he looked at me with daggers through the rear-view mirror like he wanted to start something. I just took it as he was having car problems and he was really pissed about it, so I get out to approach him to see if I can help out. The second I get out he notices how tall I am and how pissed I can look when I'm actually feeling quite mellow. He freaks out, guns the gas, and now I'm walking back to my car wondering what the hell wrong's with him:iono:
