What do you guys think of the VW Rabbit 2-door?
It starts at $14990 and comes statndard with power EVERYTHING. 10 speaker stereo, 150 hp, cruise control, remote entry, 5 year powertrain and 4-year everything else including 4 years of Roadside assistance STANDARD. These will actually be built in Germany too. Not like the Golf of Mexico... get it? Sorry.
The Yaris with Power Package is going to be near $14000 and still won't have half of those features.
I'm sorry, but I may have to start looking at the Rabbit a little more seriously. The Rabbit is a great looking car. Good milage is nice, but features are nice too.

It's gas mileage is rating 25% less than the Yaris. this may be the wrong place to ask what people think about the VW. Some of us may be a bit biased.

More info the dest charge is $630 on top of $14,990, Auto trans is $1075, so for 16,695 I'll take my yaris that was $13,140 with the Auto and I'll roll down my windows.

I was giving a heads up comparison to what I bought, apples vs apples, I don't have the power package but I do have auto. So I am in for $3500 less against the 2 door rabbit. I realize it the rabbit has other options standard as well, but the Yaris fit my needs and price. You may wanna look at the Xa as well it is more optioned than the Yaris as well for a similar price.
I bought the first hatchback I found on a lot and I am happy. For my 650 miles a week, the MPG was the most important factor.
On a VW, you may wanna wait for the 2008's to see if they release a TDI diesel.

To be honest, i do really like VW rabbit, either rabbit or yaris when i make a final choices, It is about $3000 CAD dollars different. But my family has very bad exprience on European car.(my brother's BMW 325i brought back to dealer reset the engine light 3 times and they cannot find out the problem, my uncle drive his Volvo not much but end up the car needs to be replace the transmission. My friends VW and Mini also need to reset the engine lights). Buy a new car it suppost a happy thing, i don;t want to get headache. So I bought a Yaris end up( This is my fourth Toyota I ever got, I am not rich, I can't take the risk, I am very happy with my Yaris.)

the VW is pretty sweet. but i gave up the extra features for having better mpg.
my basic rule was 'buy the cheapest car you can find with the best mpg"
the yaris looked good which was an added bonus.
I like the new Rabbit (price is very attractive), also I am a fan of VW Golf/Rabbit.
Before I made my decision on Yaris I had think about it. But the current Rabbit made me very disappointed.
1. Worse gas milage than the last gen.
The Golf IV having 24/30mpg.. the Rabbit having 22/30mpg.
2. No TDI engine option (if they do, it will be in $20+k range).
In these days, fuel efficient is a very critical factor for consumer choosing their next vehicle. Also think about the resale, few years later. Market will flood with hybrids and more fuel efficient vehicle, who is going to buy a Rabbit with lousy gas milage?
To me I need a efficient vehicle for my daily commute, so I choose Yaris instead of Rabbit.

BTW, VW's are chick cars. Sorry, fellas, nothing wrong with driving one, but I would never own one. Even the name sounds femine. Rabbit? Awwwwe, what a cute little bunny rabbit!

The only VDub that was really awesome was the Sirocco:

or the Corrado:

Granted this was back in the day however I would love to have a Corrado...they were pretty damned fun.

I have only owned fast turbo cars. I bought the yaris simply because of the price and the gas mileage. Also with springs and some rims, the yaris is one of the best looking cars on the road. I never have been a fan of the VW rabbit. They should leave it in retirement...

That sucks, I've just gotten all good props. Mostly people scratching their heads as to what it is. No gay jokes. Don't get me wrong, the only VW's I like are the old school "bugs". That's about it.
Every person that I ever knew that drove a VW was either a woman, or gay. That's just my experience.

I like the rabbit, but if someone is basing this purchase on fuel economy, the Yaris is the hands down winner... besides, the only modern VW I think would be even slightly fun is the R32, and that's just out of my price range.

the new rabbit has a 6 SPEED AUTOMATIC with CLUTCH!!! so..it might not be wise to get the 5 speed manual.\
also, VW's are EXTREMLY UNRELIABLE!! have you watche PINKS!? it didn't even make it 4 times down the 1/4 mile, and THAT WAS A PROFESSIONAL VW BUILDER!!!! I would take a honda civic with integra motor over a VW anyday!!! though, they do seem to have pretty solid doors (Yaris does, too, though)

The problem with the Golf production in Mexico was reliability. The reliability for the entire VW line is worse than any North American producer. VW offers those warranties because of the poor performance of their cars over time, and the reputation that VW's are unreliable hunks of junk.
The VWs are not any peppier - the dealer said the rabbit was 'built like a tank'. The rabbit is 300KG (30%) heavier than the yaris, requiring the additional HP. My yaris is nimble and ziippy and way more fun to drive. It has the additional head room that makes it feel roomy and spacious.
Most importantly, its a Toyota, and is allowed to park in the driveway. :P

FYI... Rabbit is made in Germany. Only Jetta is made in Mexico.
From my past exp. VW's relibility doesn't bother me (esp. the base model with less gadget one.).. but the real problem is the resale, since all the people have the preception of VW is unreliable. That sink the resale.

Well, against my better judgement, I feel I have to give my 2 cents. I'm a devoted VW fan AND a devoted Toyota fan. I feel uniquely qualified to weigh in on this debate since I own BOTH the Yaris and the Rabbit (as well as the new GTI). I bought my daughter an '07 Rabbit two weeks before I bought my Yaris.
To be frank, there is really no comparison between the Rabbit and the Yaris. The two cars are at opposite ends of the automotive spectrum in almost every respect except size. I don't think VW gave a crap about Yaris when it designed the Rabbit and I don't think Toyota gave a crap about the Rabbit when they designed the Yaris.
In my opinion, the Yaris is the ultimate commuter. Its mileage numbers alone will ensure its success in the USA in the current market. It's well designed, tightly built, and well refined for such a small car.
The Rabbit goes after a different market segment. It's much heavier. It feels much more solid on the road than the Yaris. Intuitively, I think it will hold up MUCH better in a collision than the Yaris. It's much better equipped for the money. Its gas mileage SUCKS compared to Yaris. It will no doubt spend much more time in the dealer's service bay... (trust me, I know what I'm talking about here, I've owned VW's since the mid 80's).
As a matter of personal preference, I'd pick the VW to drive on the hwy for a trip of 100 or more miles. I'd pick the Yaris for everything else.
Both cars are profound winners. If the Rabbit got 40 MPG, I wouldn't own a Yaris.

now that vw doesn't make the tdi for the n.american market, one would think that they would design the new rabbit more for fuel economy (at least the entry level versions),
that is what people want in a small car, not something that gulps the gas like a bigger vehicle,
but this design is already 2 years old for europe, so fuel economy wasn't such the big issue then as it is now.
perhaps that is why vw isn't doing so well economically. bad decisions.
they are really nice looking cars though, especially the gti.

It only happen if they give us Rabbit TDI. However, they stop making TDI for 07

The TDI was an awesome fuel sipper (51 MPG hwy)... but talk about quirky... lots of little annoying problems that would nickle and dime you to death. Then there was the $900.00 timing belt change at 80K!    Even if they still sold TDI's here, I'd never own another one. For maximum MPG, I'll be sticking with the Japanese from now on.

they should get on that, i see about 5 yarises a day now here in canada when i'm out and about, people are buying this car, big time! if vw had something comparable (price and fuel-economy wise), they would probably be selling like hotcakes.
a few days ago i went on a daytrip and i saw 9 yarises! 8 hatches, 1 sedan.
are you guys in the states seeing more on the road now? i was in boston for a week last month and only saw 3 (2 sedans, 1 hatch) and they were all in the city itself, i didnt' see anything smaller than a corrolla on the drive through new york state.

Funny you should mention seeing more on the road... I just came home from a trip to Costco and I saw 2 Yaris sedans in the parking lot. I drive 126 miles per day commuting and I'm seeing more and more Yaris' everyday. Weird thing is... in the States, it seems to be the reverse, I've only seen two other hatches on the road. I've seen at least 10 sedans.

Yea, the VW Rabbit is all made in Germany, EXCEPT for the engine I believe it was. That is still made in Mexico.
I just test drove a VW Rabbit on Friday. Its was a very nice ride, it looks fucking PIMP on the outside and REALLY fucking tight and phat on the inside. It has A MILLION base features. EXCEPTIONALLY impressive from that standpoint alone for like 20,000 for a 2-door (plus taxes and freight of course).
Yea, I think if you're looking to repair the VW Rabbit, you're gonna wanna more likey than not taking it to an actual VW shop to fix, and thats gonna run u more in repairs than fixing our Toyota Yarises
I agree, No VW is a threat to toyota....
BTW, VW's are chick cars. Sorry, fellas, nothing wrong with driving one, but I would never own one. Even the name sounds femine. Rabbit? Awwwwe, what a cute little bunny rabbit!
Must say, the ONLY comments I really get about my Yaris is how "cute" it is. Idont mind though. I like the fact thats chicks dig it... i dont need masuline and powerful cars. Doesnt appeal to me.
The Rabbit FEELS sturdy as hell, looks less "unique" and has more HP... i'd say its much more masculine based on those factors alone.
also, VW's are EXTREMLY UNRELIABLE!! have you watche PINKS!? it didn't even make it 4 times down the 1/4 mile, and THAT WAS A PROFESSIONAL VW BUILDER!!!! I would take a honda civic with integra motor over a VW anyday!!! though, they do seem to have pretty solid doors (Yaris does, too, though)
The new Rabbit should be WAY more realiable than the Golfs. They are entirely made in German except for their engines.
The doors on teh RAbbit are a million times more solid and heavy feel than teh Yarises. I was so shocked at how heavy the fucking doors were when i got into the drivers seat!
The problem with the Golf production in Mexico was reliability.

I agree, the rabbit does freaking feel like its truly built like a tank! HEAVY as hell. The doors feel exception think and solid. the whole ride feels solid. I like the nimbleness of my Yaris better though.
FYI... Rabbit is made in Germany.
Yup. Wolfsburg, Germany (except for the engine as i said above)

The dealer is trying to rip you off.. There is nothing special for changing the timing belt on a TDI vs. the Gasoline engine.. It should only cost you around $500 to $600 if you do it in an independent VW garage. And I agree, the TDI timing belt recommand to be replaced more frequent than the gasoline one.. since they have bigger torque.

Why buy a two door car because it has 10 speakers. I'd rather have my Yaris with 4 doors and 4 speakers, and get 10 more mpg on the highway. I have the winter package and the power package in my 4 door Yaris sedan and Love it.

Okay, lets do the math.
These are rough numbers... don't post a zillion replies correcting me because your numbers are a bit different. I know this.
Say you drive 15,000 miles in a given year. That is about 40 miles a day.
A Yaris owner would get about 34 MPG average. This means that he/she would use about 440 gallons of gas in a year. At a price of $2.15 a gallon, that is $950.
A Rabbit owner would get about 24 MPG average. This means that he/she would use about 625 gallons of gas in a year. At a price of $2.15 a gallon, that is $1,350.
$400 a year just in gas, and these were conservative numbers.

Hopefully a diesel is comming. They're confused between 2008-2009 because the new blutek diesel they get from mercedes failed california/new york emissions by something like 4ppm.
How's that.. Just because the hippy's have too much power in a few states, we all get screwed out of the diesel that would make the rabbit a real competitor for yaris buyers who were on the econo-small/highend-small fence. More choice is always a good thing.

I think the Rabbit is a good buy but not compared to cars like the Yaris, and FIT based on gas and price point. In the past I read some forums and it seems the gas mileage in the Rabbit is like a large SUV (14mpg-22mpg), which is unacceptable for a car in that class or even that small. But otherwise its a good bang for your buck if you were comparing more to to the Corolla, Civic as far as features go. The new GTi is nice, I saw one on the way to work.

In Vegas I see a Yaris about once every quarter (3 months); this is an Escalade town. I do love the Rabbit! Someone talked about the Polo, I was looking for a Lupo before I found the Yaris. I have a Jetta too, no problems yet, but I am just waiting. Toyota/Honda is the bomb.
Perhaps in the States, you're able to compare the Rabbit vs Yaris. But here in Canada, the Rabbit is noticeably more expensive. I've got a loaded 5dr Yaris Le which is similarly equipped to the base Rabbit (however, the Rabbit gets side airbag and 6-way adjustable seats) and given similar options, the Rabbit is still $4000 more expensive.
If fuel consumption wasn't a priority, I'd still drop the extra $4000 to be in the Rabbit. It's too bad the Rabbit couldn't have the 1.9L turbo diesel, but I here they'll be coming out with a 2.0L diesel which can adhere to the new emission standard. but, I'm leery of all the extra emission devices that's going to be very costly to maintain.
