Tell me about stupid drivers you encounter in your day..

for me, it was last night... the weather wasn't all that great, and everybody was driving at 60-70kmh in a 70 zone. Since everybody driver fast in Quebec, i drove at 80kmh on the left lane because others were going too slow on the right lane. Then this Dodge Ram arrived behind me and kept tailgating me. So after ~1km going faster than all the cars (at 80kmh) of my right, i finally managed to merge into the right lane. Then the Ram floored it.. to tailgate the car that was infront of me...

It was damn stressing.

Some people have a different concept of "until I had room to merge back in". If you see a slot with a three second lead time, pull in, let him pass, and resume passing others.

65 mph is the limit on CA 99, with most people going 5-10 over that. I was in the middle lane with traffic and observed in my rear view mirror a car darting in and out of all lanes. He was coming up quickly in the slow lane and moving into congested traffic. I anticipated that he would probably cut me off and sure enough, did so. He continued is own little road race for about another mile before exiting. In all, he gained about 15 seconds on us all the while putting everyone at risk. Unbelievable idiocy.

I sure should have brake checked him... but it was very stressing to have someone on my tail. So, i was simply busy trying to not go faster than 80kmh and it was a bad time to damage the car.

Ready for this? I got punched in the face the other day for driving a Yaris. Truck full of 6 guys pulls up next to me and my friend and they talk a bunch of shit. They follow me onto a sidestreet and we get out of the car. Nothing else I could do. I'm not a fighter... I took the punch. I clocked one person when I was a lot younger and lets just say I have the utmost respect for what an adult can do with one punch. I'm not rotting in jail on the account of some kid that decided he wanted to punch me because I drive a little Toyota and might have voted for Obama. In the end I walked up to the truck, leaned in his window, made sure to bleed all over his car and told him to get his friend back in before I changed my mind and stomped his head into the ground. Two of the five in the truck got out and dragged the moron back in and they took off.

At least they didn't hurt my Yaris.

Glad that you are ok. It sound like it could have been much worse than it was. Did you get a picture of their truck on your cell phone? License Plate? The driver? Did you call the cops? As I have got older in life, I have zero tolerance for punks out having fun at other people expence.

There has been a few recent cases of deliberate rear end accidents where the driver then got robbed after getting out of the car on a side street. My wife has been instructed not to get out of the car until the cops arrive. Although I practice defensive driving you never know who is going to run into you. Thats why when pulling the trailer with the truck I am always packing heat.

To the O.P.

No offence to ya, but if you are in the left lane and people are tailgating you, that means you have to GTFO from the lane ASAP, no matter what the conditions are. Who knows? His house might be on fire. His pregnant wife might be in trouble. Etc etc.
I know you were going over the speed limit to justify the fact that you were already going fast enough on fast lane, but to me, and to most of us, the left lane is a "passing lane," not "fast lane."

Greater Vancouver has been under heavy fog for the past week. I noticed that people are generally not slowing down and even going faster!

Is the fog giving them a feeling of flying blind inside the clouds???

Might not be long before we get the news of a pile-up on Hwy. 99 or along Knight Street!

Our highways have a keep right except to pass signs posted. A few years ago the state beefed up the law under a road rage section. Tickets can be written. It has little effect.

Yeah keep getting people who want to switch lanes with me completely parallel to them. As they are about to get into my lane with me in it, I go Meep Meep and then they realize my lil Yaris in the lane, and back off. Need to change my horn and get a spoiler maybe then people will notice my car on the road.

That crap only happens on TV. This is what we have police, fire and ambulance services for. On the .000001% chance someone finds themselves with a legal reason to speed I would agree with you, but the rest are just impatient a-holes that think they own the friggin road.

You are right about one thing, the left lane is a passing lane, the problem is that these types of drivers seem to be in a constant passing mode and never leave the left lane. So the very people you try to defend as in their right to tailgate you in the left lane would seem to be the worst violators of the "passing lane" concept.

they should make highway training a mandate before getting a license

i believe 90% of drivers don't know what the most left lane is really for.

i once had a tailgater tail me(about 2 feet close) on the RIGHT lane(going 10mph over speed limit) for like 5 minutes+(with clear lanes on the left). I just let go the gas pedal and let the speed drop - sure enough the driver violently changed lanes and sped away.

People in Ontario hog the left on the highways for sure, but I'm usually in the centre lane because of that stupid 50 over garbage now, anyway. Where I get aggravated is in Quebec, which I drive in a lot. Only 1/5th of Quebec drivers seem to know what a signal is. But that's not my main problem. I don't know how many of you have driven the 138 between Quebec City and Baie-Comeau, but I have many, many times. The limit is 90 most of the time, one lane each way. I like to cruise at 110-120. So, I'll always eventually come behind someone going 90-100. There's only ever a second passing lane every 20kms or so. Usually I just wait till then, but as soon as the passing lane comes up everyone going 90-100 all of a sudden finds their gas pedal and goes 140-150!!! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???!! So freaking annoying. THEN when the passing lane ends, they slow back to 90-100. This happens at every single damn passing lane. So I start tapping into my car's power and pass them on a broken yellow.

Some freakin jerk in a Yaris sedan once tried to keep me from passing him... Went over the broken yellow, left it in 6th to pass, hardly gassing it. Then, I heard his car gear down form my open windows and the engine was buzzing really fast. I just looked at him like "what drug are you on??" and geared to 4th and floored it. Now generally, when I come to those rare second passing lanes I just go up to about 160 and everybody gets out of my way. I usually flash a bunch too so nobody comes out in front of me.

Generally, Quebec is fun to drive in cause everyone does go fast and the cops don;t seem to care. I passed highway patrol at 120 on the MET before...40 through MTL. Didn't do anything. My fiance lives on St Laurent so I'm in that area quite often. I've seen people street racing close to there, like really going at it, right in front of cops and they never even bothered to chase them, lol.

Driving in Nova Scotia has to be the most annoying overall. The limit on most of their main highways is 110km/h like New Brunswick, but in NS the slow lane goes 95-100 and the passing lane 105-110, and no one moves over for anything lol. Cops are also really strict there. A guy I work with who used to live in Sydney got a ticket for 103 in a 100 zone before...2 demerit points for 3 km/h over, lol.

So innocent until proven guilty means nothing to you? Obviously 50 over in heavy traffic or surface streets is retarded, but I've been on the 401 out in the east suburbs around 2-4am many times and hardly ever see another car there. Cruising 150-200km/h at times like that wouldn't really put anyone at risk. Wouldn't even have to change lanes to go around somebody if you stay in the left.

Actually, it puts our wallets at risk, because every time someone smacks a guard rail going 200 km/h and gets killed, taxpayers fix it. I'm sure there are other expenses I haven't covered, too. Yeah, I'll get technical to argue against driving that fast.

Look, I've done my share of stupid stuff too. Last summer got caught 155 in an 80 bombing around on the NS mountains. By my grandmother's nieghbour no less.

I just don't like the fact that just because a cop wants to, they can pin you for this (including stunt driving which can mean ANYTHING). Even if you win the case in court, you still have the towing and impound fees (about $500 if you're lucky), and have the suspension on your license for 6 years! How fair is that, if you're cleared of the charge and you still have to pay???? I've been pulled over before for accidentally chirping my tires a tiny little squeak taking off from a light, and the cop said he could have charged me with stunt driving if he wanted. Which has the exact same consequences of 50 over.

I'm with alhope34.

I think the highways should allow the cars to go as fast as safely possible. Granted speed kills, but you're probably more likely to get yourself killed while crossing the sidewalk on McCowan Rd then doing over 50+ on the 400 series while in-between cities (assuming you're a responsible driver and know how to handle the speeds). It sucks when you require 8hr to do a trip when your car can easily do it in 4hrs. If going fast was such a problem, why don't we freaking get rid of all the cars and go back to bicycles. (in which case, I'd have the fastest bicycle around and would be in awsome shape....I'm all for it)

While you make many good points, I drive the majority of the time between Markham rd and Mississauga Rd and see my fair share of people driving well over 100 km/h. If people had the common sense to use their signals, not pass on the right etc etc you could have autobahn conditions on some stretches of the 400 series highways, but I'm don't agree that you can safely assume people here could handle that kind of responsibility.

McCowan Rd , you got that right.

IMO, it's not going fast that's a problem, it's the inability for people to judge when it's appropriate and how to handle their vehicle at different speeds. People going even 1 km/h over the speed limit during rush hour on the 401 on the stretch I drive is unacceptable. I am a fairly good driver and confident in my abilities, but I still would never speed or drive too fast for the conditions of my commute because I do not trust the judgment and abilities of other drivers.

If people want to go 150 km/h or any speed which is too fast for the conditions and then want everyone else to accommodate their dangerous driving style, they're completely selfish, self centered and a danger to everyone. The sad thing is that drivers like this usually kill innocent passengers, pedestrians or drivers of other vehicles. Most accidents on our roads are not accidents, but purportrated by negligence and taking peoples vehicles away when they are breaking the speed limit by a minimum of 50% should be the least of anyones concerns if they truly are a responsible driver.

That would be sweet if the made the infrastructure for more people to ride their bikes. If it was safe I would ride my bike to work 52km each way.

All your points above are valid, but I think imposing an unrealistic speed limit is not the solution. It's not going to put a dent into the death toll. The suicidal/crazies and speed demons aren't going to care about the rules. Creating a situation on the highway that allows both fast drivers and slow drivers to coexist is the only good solution.

Enforcing an autobahn style of driving in our 400 series highway would be easy. Simply impounding the car for hogging the left lane or using the right lane to passing. Then we can get around to increasing the speed limits for fast flowing areas on the 400 series hwy (e.g Napanee area on 401) would be a good place to start. In the case of the 401, in the GTA area, speed limits should be lowered...too many cars and too many stupid drivers.

I agree. If they could enforce different speed limits for different lanes etc. Zero tolerance for passing on the right or going too slow in any lane for it's assigned limit.

If we had German style law enforcement and discipline here, I'd still be driving my BMW to work, as you could actually safely drive it to it's abilities under those conditions without fearing for your life at least once a day.

you really just need to make the roads more dangerous and take off the speed limits.

ever driven thru montreal on that lifted highway? do more than 90 and its scary sh!t....concrete barriers are RIGHT there....

problem is the MTO designs highways for 120km/h in shitty conditions (i know, i worked on the report for the lane widening of the 401 from woodstock to kitchener)....so the roads SUPPORT speeding.

make the roads with more blind hills and sharper turns and thatll slow people down.

you dont see too many people running down the old highway 3 near lake erie at breakneck speeds....why? because its more dangerous....

its our PC, safety-first society, imo. design the roads for safer, faster travel then impose and a speed limit that isnt enforced. what do you expect to happen?
