I bought mine last October and my first tank i got 36.5 mpg the second tank 40 mpg.

So far this winter i have been averaging 36 to 37 mpg but most of my commute is highway.

The dealer filled up the first tank when i purchased mine and saw 37mpg. The second tank which I filled to one click netted 39. Now I get between 41 and 43 mpg but I drive slower (65mph average) and 80 percent on the Hwy.

That is exactly what I got. 32-33, and it has pretty much stayed consistent since. Went up a touch.

Averaging 32-36 here, and I'd bet that's the norm; those here claiming to get up to 50 mpg must be yanking our chains, LOL. If these cars regularly got 40 mpg (or more), the stickers on the windows would be touting that claim. Kind of disappointing, since my old car got 40, but the Yaris is so darned cute!

my first 3 tanks were all around 36... once I started using DFCO.. it jumped to 40. Slowly over the next 4 months it went as high as 44. Most of the change is due to driving habits.. there might have been as much as 3mpg due to break in & synthetic oil... the rest is due to warm climate & driving habits.

1st tank filled by dealer(s) for both '08 automatic sedan and '08 5speed manual L.B. averaged litte over 43 . Drove those very conservatively for the break in period of 500 miles . Drove different speeds and tried to keep under 3 r.p.m.s as much as possible . Don't think we've duplicated that yet , close but no cigar . That was with the conventional factory oil . Use syn for both now . Sometimes ponder if they would get better mileage by going back to regular oil . :iono: . Just stick with the syn. Lot of short trips . Less traveling with winter weather .

Drove mine home from the dealer the evening of August 1, 08. I threw the first tank out because the dealer filled it; it was 38.18 mpg for 336 miles. The 4 tanks after that averaged 42.1 mpg (41.22 – 42.74). Mileage jumped a little and the next 14 fill-ups averaged 44.6 mpg (42.92 – 45.63). I also go the ScanGauge at this time so that might account for the jump. I fill-up once a week and average 330 miles/week. The last tank, with just over 6,500 miles on the odometer, might have made another jump. Out of nowhere I seem to be getting better MPG numbers, set 3 straight days of record high mpg on my 30 mile commute. I did not change anything about my driving to warrant it and the weather was not much different than the previous weeks. Last tank was 315 miles and calculated to 46.91 mpg. I was thinking maybe I filled up inconsistently (less gas due to pump shutting off earlier or something) but this week I am still getting higher than usual commute mpg numbers. Current tank as of this morning the SG2 reports 46.7 mpg average. It has been very accurate about mileage (distance driven), tank mpg, and gas used after the first few fill-ups were used to calibrate it.

Now, I’m working for these mpg numbers not just driving. No engine off coasting or pulse and glide techniques… yet. Just driving with a really light pedal, using momentum for the hills, 42 psi in the tires and using the brake pedal as little as possible. I do have two sections where I can take it out of gear and coast for about ¾ of a mile but that’s about it. Most of my driving is in traffic so I do have to go at least the speed limit. I can see where people are getting over 50 mpg with flat terrain driving, taking it easy on the skinny pedal and using advanced hypermiling techniques. They are working for it but it is possible even with the 1.5 gasser we have as our only engine option.

The EPA estimates don’t reflect the high mpg figures some drivers are getting because they drive a little differently than ‘regular’ folks. I operate my motor vehicle with safely getting the highest possible mpg as my priority. I don’t drive with getting there as fast as possible as a priority. My commute takes me 5 minutes more each way, 10 minutes a day or about an hour a week. Time well spent as I am more relaxed and much more aware of vehicles around me on the roads.

I'm currently on my 5th tank of gas and so far have been getting 37-38mpg per tank consistently, regardless of driving conditions.

I got mine last week and got 38.94 mpg on the first tank. Should do better once I remember to take it out of 4th gear. Coming from a Scion XA forth gear feels like my old 5th gear. I do mostly highway to and from work.

I have a feeling drt1120 is talking about putting on 5th gear instead of 4th of 5-speed manual and otterhere is talking about putting on D isntead of 3 of 4-speed auto.

Second tank 40.9 but still forget to take it out of 4th. After going 105k miles in my XA it is going to be a hard habit to break.

how many of you guys are doing city or highway?

i do mostly city and traffic i realized and im still netting around 32mpg with 1700 on the odometer

why?
02-09-2009, 11:46 AM
When I broke mine in I got about 40 US mpg on the first tank, and the 2nd or 3rd I got 44. I drove like an old grandmother though because that was when gas was ridiculous and I wanted to see what this thing could do. Mileage really is all about the driving habits. I now get from 35 - 40 depending on what mood I am in.

That is amazing. You average over 40mpg. The best I ever got was 39.5mpg on a road trip. I get 32-34mpg on daily driving. In the summer it's 29-31mpg with the AC.

The best I ever got on a road trip was 51 MPG from Reno to SF, but that was going from 4500 ft elevation to sea level-so mostly down hill, but I sure loved it. Even when new I got 42MPG and that's pretty much what I average now with 17K miles on it.

I had similar results. The more I drive, the better the mileage gets. Today I filled up and got almost 37 MPG. That was after driving at 70 MPH with my cruise control on. I also have an automatic.

Just to update...

I filled up again and got just over 38 MPG. The only modification I have made was to put a K&N air filter in and use Lucas fuel lubricant. I was thinking about putting some Bosh quad spark plugs in, but waiting for better weather.

I've got 2 bars left before empty and I've just hit 325 miles if I remember right...is the Yaris tank 11.1 gallons? If so I'm planning on getting about 380+ miles. So that puts me at about 34.2mpg or so on my first tank:wink:

But this being my first automatic in a while I often find myself going 80mph without relaizing it. Whereas with my Mach 1 I'd usually ride at about 2000 rpm in 5th gear. I was actually getting about 25+mpg with that...anyways I guess my point here is that I could probably get a lot better with the Yaris if I was only doing 70 as opposed to occassonally touching 80mph:iono:

I rarely get over 33 unless it's mostly highway miles.

I get 26-28 mpg city miles. I'm disappointed.

That's even worse than MY mileage; that's amazing!!!

Are your tires property inflated? All the junk outta the trunk???

I don't yet have 5k miles on mine; an hoping for improvement as time goes on.

And I drive as carefully as I can without being absolutely ridiculous about it...

I got 38 mpg from jump. I got over 40 driving like grandma. I still average about 38. I drive about half road/hwy and half freeway about 40 miles per day....to work. I also keep my freeway speed around 60.

My first few tanks were around 32. As I neared 10K miles, I got up to 36 average. Now at 18K miles, my gas has dropped to 29-30 average. I can't figure out what's happened. This came just after I put on 17" wheels with high performance tires.

I get around 32 mpg I drive mostly freeway sea level to around 2500 feet and back around 110 miles a day and do about 80 to 85
I did try 70 max for a tank and the mpg went up to 38
So if your looking for great miles drive like grandma.
Anything over 42mpg I assume your going 65 or less..
But the way I see it anything over 31 mpg is great

I've been averaging 36-38 for the few tanks I've put in so far (1,600 miles). Pretty much 60/40 highway/city.
