just a simple poll on the yaris gas mileage. i posted here instead of the fuel economy forums because i would probably get more views.
I bought the car mainly because of the advertised fuel economy. i have about 3000km's on the car now. i'm not happy with the gas mileage im getting.

my average full tank from empty was $36 CDN last me around 560km. needless to say, i expected more.
heres what i have;

09 yaris ce
3000km
base model
no power/no ac
running 205/50/15 on 15" frd wheels
pretty cold winters here/ low -5 highs 10
short trips around the city/pizza delivery
80% city
20% highway
89 octane gas used
have yet to do my first oil change

I'm getting between 33 and 40. Can't complain about that - my last car got 27 on a good day.

To be honest, for such a small car and engine; I was expecting more. I get ~33MPG but note that I have larger wheels and tires on my Yaris (215/45ZR17s, stock tires are 175/65R14s). But for such a relatively light vehicle I would expect ~38MPG even with the larger wheels.

Oh, and I don't know if the dealership that put the wheels on adjusted the speedometer; but according to my GPS it is pretty much spot on. Has anyone ever checked their speedo against a GPS while running the stock tires? I suspect it may be a bit optimistic.

Note that I still am at less than 3000 miles on my Yaris and that it is an auto, but considering that there are larger sub-compacts and even compacts out there that claim similar mileage, I thought I'd be getting better...

Cheers! M2

I'm pleased with my numbers. I'm no hypermiler, nor am I a full out tuner looking to some how squeeze my 1500cc engine into submission. I average between 34 to 37 in mixed driving, in a very hilly area with lots of fun roads. I have a 5 speed that runs on 205 40 17's. My wife has an auto and she averages between 31 and 34 in mostly stop and go trafic on the same wheels and tires as mine. Temp, altitude, driving style and any number of factors can change that number.

The mileage of my Yaris D-4D is between 43-49 MPG.
My right foot is heavy on the other side so it's good for me.
It all depens on my driving style to get 52 MPG.
If i had to drive at roads where the Vmax 50 MPH i should be able to get 59 MPG but i doubt if i (in person) can get that mileage.

i used to have a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. i got between 35 and 41 city mileage. i really liked that, and got used to it. the thing wouldnt start in the cold, so i got rid of it.

my new '09 yaris liftback, with just over 1200 miles on it, can get over 38 if i drive it carefully it in the city. i am getting those readings from a scangaugeII on the trip meter, not momentary.

some times i get over 38, sometimes its advertised 29, sometimes its 26, so i average out at arround 31 or 32. i just have to fill more often then the jetta since the yaris only has a 9.2 gallon tank as opposed to a 14.7

i love this car more and more.

3 dr 5 speed stock with crappy PAO synth oil, geting high thirties on a 65 mile round daily commute, with 2 cold starts in the 0-10 deg F range. About 65/35 city-highway with 70-80 MPH on highway and no ecomomy tricks other than leaving a reasonable distance between the car in front of me and NOT using the brakes. If you use the brakes, you are wasting the fuel you ate to get up to speed (converting momentum into heat). Now, I can waste that "saved" fuel hammering the li'l bugger off the stop lights!

I love the car, and the gas mileage is not bad, but I am jealous of the people that are getting above 40mpg. I get 32-34 with mixed driving, and I'm very careful and have a very light foot, so it sounds a bit strange when people say they drive without being careful and with a heavy foot and get around 40.

I also had a jetta TDI, and was getting about 36mpg with the same route I drive now, I will still try to break the 36mpg mark though.

I was hoping for slightly more. I'm averaging about 36 MPG in Southern California. It's not bad, and should be content with that, but my old CRX was getting about 41 under the same driving conditions. Makes selling that CRX a tought thing to do (I still have it).

I'm a new owner. After 3 tanks of varied driving, I'm consistently getting 36-37mpg which isn't bad by any measure but my 2000 Civic HB consistently got 38-40 and was much faster. I thought the Yaris would easily beat the Civic on mpg's. Maybe it will improve over time. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the car.

Same for me. I am averaging almost 34, but it is pretty much all city. I can do a bit better on the highway, but have never seen 38, much less 40. I still love the car though and have no regrets. Well maybe wish I'd waited for the 5 door.

I chose other, because while it's more than I expected, I'm not happy about it since we should have access to the smaller engines available on these cars in Europe and Asia which are capable of even better FE. Then I'd be happy.

32 to 34 MPG, city driving. 39.5 MPG on a road trip doing 80 MPH with AC.

During the winter I usually get what was advertised on the highway, a little less in the city. Mainly it's because my commute is very, very short and my car doesn't even fully warm up by the time I get there. I ride my bike unless it is below 30 degrees F or there is ice/snow/slush on the ground when I leave in the morning.

During the summer, I get better than advertised, and am satisfied with it. I'm not sure about in Canada, but here in the U.S. we get a different blend of fuel in the winter which is not as good for gas mileage. So if you combine the cold temps (longer warm up time), winter blend of fuel, you get worse mileage in the winter. In the winter if I drive mainly in the city, I can usually barely get 300 miles out of a tank. In the summer, driving in the city I've been able to get 370 miles out of a tank. It's like night and day.

Don't make your judgment until at least driving it for a year. Also, your MPG should increase once the engine breaks in a bit at maybe 10-15k miles.

I have had mine since September of 08 and average between 41-43mpg. That's about 80% Highway going about 65mph on average. If I run 70-80mph I usualy average aroung 37-38mpg. No FE mods except synthetic oil and tires at 36psi.

I'm only on my 3rd tank of gas, but so far it's been 36-ish mpg with 60/40 highway/city. Can't really complain about that (my last car got 30 under the same conditions) - but hoping for more when it breaks in.

More than I expected during warm weather. Now disappointed at how it has fallen off come winter. I did expect a decrease, but not so major. I've lost 80-100 kl range per tank.

I'm getting more than I expected based on the 2008 EPA rating. Although a lot of cars get more than advertised.

My Kia Rio had a small 1.5L engine and weighed about the same as the Yaris and I always got 26-27mph in town. Now almost consistently 36mpg with the Yaris and I haven't tried switching to synthetic oil yet either.

I get 35 mpg and this includes using a/c all the time and driving up steep mountain roads. I'm perfectly happy with that.

28.6 low (pulling a 4x8 trailer on bad roads in winter) to a 45.5 high in summer.
Usually 34 winter/41 summer.....for a 38.7 average over 54,000 miles.

Very happy with it, just hate winter here.

I've always managed a little over EPA ratings but on this `08 LB I'm really clobbering them. The summer peak was 45.5 mpg and so far this winter (with total grille block and synthetic lubes) I've kept it from falling below 40 MPG. It all depends on how, when, and where you drive.

Fuel economy and net worth have something in common for me. No matter how big the numbers get I always want just a little bit more.

Seeing as the Yaris is the most fuel-efficient entry-level vehicle little money can buy, for what it's worth I would say I am quite satisfied. I average 48mpg when driving very gently, about 45 when just driving sanely, and even if I thrash the car like mad, I cannot get lower than EPA (31 combined). I've driven 90-100mph on a whole tank and still averaged 32.5 mpg.

But as Voodoo said, a lack of better choice of engines and transmissions is all that stands between total satisfaction. The new Euro Yaris-spec 1.33l engine comes with a 6 speed manual and start/stop...now that is something we should have here!

when it was below zero and hovering around zero degrees Fahrenheit I was getting consistant ~30MPG, the temps went back up to around 20-25, and I was back at 41.5MPG, it seemed to me that in the summer or whenever its above 50F I get right around 44, but Ive gotten as high as 51.

My lowest MPG ever was 35mpg. Most tanks consistently get 37.5 to 38.5 mpg year round. Highest was 43mpg on a 300 mile round trip running the ac some.

Stock tires, manual transmission, sedan, sensible driving, very infrequent braking and a small amount of coasting. Average speed of 60 to 65 mph on the highway. I have fewer than 5 stops on my 20 mile commute.

Um, how can you be unhappy with your mileage when your driving conditions are the prime recipe for the lowest possible mileage??? You are aware of this right?

Pizza delivery type driving is the worst thing for gas mileage. Adding cold weather kills it even more. You'd probably get better mileage driving 100 mph.

Take a 350 mile highway trip and see what you get. You'll be amazed.

38 hwy, 36 city. A slight drop from the 40/38 I was getting when it was still new. No complaints though. It's noticable only when you whip out the calculator.

BTW, what kind of answer does "other" imply?

getting what we expected . The little engine that could . Both cars ( '08 sedan w/ auto and '08 L.B. w/ 5 sp. man. ) get an overall average of 36 m.p.g.. Both usually have 2 passengers majority of time and is smaller engine that works a bit harder to carry it's weight . Keep tire pressue hovering around 34 p.s.i..

why?

I tend to get around 39 mpg when I don't pay attention, a little more when I do. pretty sweet stuff. When I go really hard it does drop a bit, although I am sure my really hard is much much different from most others. I didn't buy a sports car, if I wanted one, I woulda kept my Viggen.
