The current Rio is a badged-engineered Hyundai Accent. The Yaris is rated at 106, KIA at 110. But yes power to weight ratio counts. I would consider a Hyundai Accent but I just can't get over the looks.
Not only the engine and weight but also how the car is geared effects mileage.

HP? who cares... does the Kia have VVTi or anything that resembles dynamic valve timings? That alone will make up for the gap. I'd bet money that a stock yaris is faster than a stock rio... and due to the DFCO, probably a hell of a lot better on gas and emissions too.
There's a lot more to cars than total HP.

Heck, I wish I could have purchased the smaller 1.3 L engine that they get in Europe! I don't need more power, the car is more than powerful enough!

I test drove the Rio5, and liked it. IT came with a lot of standard features and an outstanding warranty. I, however, did not like the engine/drivetrain as much as the Yaris, which is why I bought the Yaris. Hyundai and Kia have moved up the ranks quite a bit in quality and such. I think it's a decent vehicle. The older Rios, on the other hand, were pretty tinny.

i too liked the rio5...was peppy
but i knew the aftermarket would have nothing for it...
the new rio/accents 1.6L has vvt, btw
It's funny everyone wants more HP until gas hits $4/gal, then everyone wants mpgs... how quickly we forget.

Korean cars can't be compared to Toyota !!!
Try to sell a used Korean car and see what you get for it....ha
Toyota's keep their value much longer and are way more reliable.

I don't know about resale, but when my Hyundai Elantra GT was totalled by a red-light-runner the insurance paid me what I paid for the car new even though it had 20k miles on it and was over a year old. Apparently they thougth that was its value.

Exactly, and we're only talking about a difference of 4 HP here anyway. Another factor in addition to weight and those mentioned above (VVT-i, etc.) is torque.

I like my Kia Rondo, yet I disliked my Hyundai Elantra.

I had a Rio before my Yaris and IMO the Yaris drives 10x better. But that just might be because I had no power anything or ac in that car haha. As far as hp goes the Rio seemed to have a little bit more pep but no where close as far as a smoother ride stock.

I'll trade
Oh and I so rarely enter these threads trashing other cars, but seriously....the Kia Rio is so shit. Before I bought the Yaris I rented a Rio. Re-Sale value is indeed bad like someone mentioned, and by next year the Rio will look outdated. It just doesnt have style.

I had a rio 5 door. It trashed the Yaris in a roden-track comparison, as did the Nissan versa (the fit won:mad:). Rio is a MUCH better handling car with better interior fit and finish than the Yaris. I thought the engine was weak - and mine started "knocking' after 1 day of conservative driving. So I dont like Korean engines after my experience with 1 sample:frown: I would like to put the Yaris 1.5L in the Rio - or maybe the 1.8L - then I could have best of both worlds:thumbup:

I was very impressed with the Rio5, especially the interior. However, I liked the engine on the Yaris better, and the fact that there's more aftermarket support. The Rio is now a decent subcompact.

i think the 80mph and 1600rpm cruising rpm definitely help that

Yep. My dad's 2006 Corvette will get 30MPG on the highway. Low RPM and aerodynamics help.

Don't consider a Hyundai Accent. I have an '07 Accent hatch and it's crap!
Bad gas mileage, interior scuffs really easy, a lot less power then the Yaris, and just all-around a cheap feeling car.
