I bought a White 2008 Yaris lb. the basic type. It has manual windows and side mirrors... and no radio. I've got alot of S$hit from my friends about it. they always say to me, " its 2008 dude, whats up with your car".... it bothers me.
Anyone got any of those comments from your friends?

Here in New Zealand we do not get the basic models as such.
our basic model Yaris is the 1.3ltr with power everything ,abs , airbags ,
and the rest of the crap . I would give my left arm (because its broke any way ) for a yaris in your configeration.
They make for great autox cars.
Just tell your friends its a work in progress .

I got exactly what you have. Manual windows/locks/ no packages and no radio. It's awesome. However, I did put a cd deck in. And i'm always afraid ill lock myself out of the car (don't got a spare key hidden under the car).
*Do your friends get 40+ mpg? ;)

Amercans are getting spoiled with all the power stuff. It's all the dealers have on their lots and they spread out your payments longer than the car lasts so you can afford it. Now everyone NEEDS power windows, mirrors, locks, remotes...remote starts..heated seats. All I wanted was A/C and a good stereo/CD. I got it on my 2008 base Yaris and I like it.
BTW I went three summers without A/C and that was no big deal either. Could be rough on dates though. hehehe :D
I only get shit from my friends about the speed of the car. Just tell them it will beat their car on a 50mile race...they will run out of gas.

To me the real question is why does others opinions of your choices bother you. Self esteem come from what I think of myself. Not what others think of me. People measure others by the yardstick of job, education and possessions. Buying into those standards keep a person from reaching their full potential in life. I know someone at work who you could call their wife fat but God help you if you call their truck ugly. That’s fighting words. Find friends that value you and not your car.

I believe that your basic car does have 4 speakers installed, It would make for an easy/cheap stereo installation.
BTW: Just tell your friends you intend to do autocross, and the extra weight of these items could affect the track times.

The model with no radio does come with speakers.

I bought the basic one. $5,000 later, it isn't so basic.  :bonk:
My friends questioned me too. I told them I didn't get it from the factory with all the bells and whistles because you couldn't, and the gas mileage was more important to me than power windows. I installed power windows down the line... you can't install 35 MPG.

And I think that is notable. Could I have gone out and bought an $18,000 car w/ alloy wheels and a Bose system and power windows? Sure. However, I'd rather buy a $13,000 car and buy Konig Heliums and an Alpine Type X sound system and put my own power windows in and put the window switches WHEREVER the hell I want. It makes the car unique to me. Take your barebones Yaris as an opportunity to add a little of you to the car.
i tried to find the most basic i could in polar white and it still had the radio, 15" steelies, and floor mats. it had to have it shipped-in from chicago-area because everything in indy was 'power-this, power-that'! like the previous posters have said, it's hard to find a 'bare bones' model. i would rip-out the radio, but i'm not sure what to do with the space(there's already way too many storage cubbies)?

Yeah, I agree with you. People cannot comprehend crank windows; however, my windows will still work in five years. I had a Pontiac with power everything, or more accurately a window that wouldn't stay up and a seat that wouldn't go down. I'm not too lazy to reach down and crank my window open and closed.

Don't sweat the roll up windows. Piss on the "I've got to have it all even though I don't need it and can't afford it" American mentality. That's why our whole economy is in the toilet. You made an intelligent choice so be proud of that.
As for the lack of a radio, go to any electronics store and spend $150 on a decent radio/CD/MP3 player and you'll come out ahead of anyone who paid so much more for the lackluster factory unit. Your car is already wired for it with speakers, too. My car came with a super heavy factory radio that has now moved on thanks to Ebay. I replaced it with a new Sony unit with MP3/CD, aux input, USB input, and remote control for only $140. It was easy to install and sounds at least 20 times better than the factory unit even with the factory speakers. The only thing I don't like about the base model is the lack of a rear wiper. My car has one and I wouldn't be able to see out the back without it. That should be standard on all LB models.

Why, oh why, do people buy the base model and then bitch about not having all the options? SURELY you knew when you bought it that it was basic.
Personally, I love my wind-up windows, and my non-ABS brakes, and my non-heated seats and non-self-locking doors. That is exactly WHY I bought the base model.

I got the base model but I did get the "convenience package" as I wanted the MP3 auxiliary connector. I also got cruise control but wish they could have removed it as I rarely use it in any of my vehicles; even the Odyssey when we take it on long trips.
At first I missed the powered locks and windows as my last car had them, but I've come to realize that much like my Jeep, it is better not to have these things that can be costly to repair. The mechanical aspects of the basic Yaris appealed to me, I prefer to own something that I have some chance of fixing myself before I relegate the job to a mechanic.
Cheers! M2

I got the barest-bones model I could (came with convenience and all-weather, but not power, packages); out the door for $13,700 (new '08). I don't get many smart remarks, because my friends know I'm fanatically frugal and something of a Luddite besides, but I'd just say "yer arms ain't broke" if they grouse about the manual windows; how lazy...

Mine was a 2008 lb basic, The only things it came with were the radio and mats.
$11,800. This way I have my weekends booked for the next year or so putting the accessories I want. So what if it cost me twice as much for them.

Simple, because some options are only offered in some areas. I would have paid for is ABS and the side airbags, but Toyota didn't sell those options in my region. Of course now both of those options are standard on all Yaris' in my region...

I understand what you’re saying, but you’re confusing the knowing of the car's shortcomings when you purchased it with being satisfied with those shortcomings while you drive it; two totally separate animals.

Only if you didn't think very hard while buying. I had a VW Fox for 10 years (bought it for $2500 in a hurry coz the missus didn't want me riding my mo'bike for another New England winter) It was the predecessor to the Yaris as far as fit-out went. Solid, but extrememly basic. Didn't have ANY power steering, for instance, and came with only 81 horses under the hood.
I hated that thing for the first month, then the wife's van had to have a new wiring harness because the windows wouldn't wind up or down, the power-steering pump bust, and so on. I loved that Fox enough after that to keep it for 10 years until it rotted, then went out and found a replacement - the Yaris.
I was under no illusions when I bought it, and 2 years later (anniversary is Feb 2nd) I still love the beast.
If you know the car's shortcomings when you buy it, don't bitch about them later - that's all I'm saying. Instead, complain about how YOU didn't know enough about yourself or your driving habits to realise that they would be a big deal later on. It's not the car, it's you. Sorry - nothing personal, but that's how I see it.

I also have the same car, just bought it 2 months ago new for 10,895 total plus tax and tag transfer fee. I almost bought the 2009 because of the color choice (white was it for the 2008) and it did have the radio installed and a rear wiper and 15" steel wheels, although it still had manual windows. Really the only regret is the wiper and will be adding one in the future as it's a B trying to backup out of my drive on those mornings with dew all over the windows. I've but $1200 in it since so I really didn't save anything but it has what I want in it minus the wiper. And yes the speakers are there from the factory even though it's sold with no deck.

Call it a blank canvas... why follow the way Toyota wants to configure your car, when you can do it your own way (and probably get much better equipment for the same price...)

Don't sweat it. Screw them.... yeah it's nice to have those options... i would love to have pw and pl an pm on my lb but just one more thing to go wrong... can't tell you how many times the window would come of the track in my civic and that had pw. i would have to take the whole door apart. and fixing your window in 16 degree weather is not fun.

I got the same model, got it dirt cheap for $12,200. Bought an IDA-x200 for the missing head unit. Great investment. Wish I had some of the power stuff though, locking and unlocking the trunk is a pain. The power locks don't bother me much since I have a 3 door. And I keep trying to roll up the windows while driving, keep having near death experiences. =/

Tell your friends you LOOOOOOOOOVE your car payments, and your gaz bill. Also tell them that your car is the last one the thieves will break into because there is nothing to steal. And if all that doesn't work and they still make fun, just tell them :middlefinger::moon:
I didn't have stereo in my last car because it got stolen and I never bothered to replace it. I have an iPod, though, so it was no biggy, just listened to MP3's instead. I like having a radio, though, gives you the news and stuff when you're stuck in traffic.
My friends know better than to criticize my new ride! but mostly I heard good things like "hey, congratulations, you finally got rid of that old POS you had before" and "yeah, it's a cute car!" or "Toyota's are good cars" and I even got a "the Yaris is ideal to drive around the Bay Area."
By the way, I'm not far from you! Might see you on the road! :)

By the way, my Yaris is a pretty basic model, with manual windows, and that doesn't bother me. The car I had before was old, so everything was manual and I'm quite used to it. Power everything is great but look at it this way, manual will never break down, so there, one more thing to tell your friends.

But the OP seems troubled.
The OP is happy with his car - it's his doofus friends that make him feel bad that he didn't spend more to get the power options.
OP - Just remember - friends come and go but the Yaris is forever!! Next time they bitch about it stop the car and boot 'em out. See how much they miss power windows then...
