I just installed my new springs and was looking at my LB without the hubcaps and thought it looked kinda cool without them... I like black wheels and am unlikely to be able to afford new wheels any time soon, so I am considering running without the hubcaps... My wife, however hates the steelies look and wants me to use the hubcaps which I feel make it look like every other Yari out there... I feel there might also be middle ground where I paint the steelies and/or the hubcaps. I just spent a lot of money on the car and cannot afford to do any thing expensive but if I could find color matched spray paint I think the hubcaps would look good painted black sand pearl to match the car and the Toyota symbol in the center flat black to match my soon to be painted flat black front and rear symbols... what ever the case may be, I'd like to know everyone's opinion and see some pics of cheap/free steelie/hubcap mods if you've done something to your stock wheels...

I like your idea of painting them if you're not getting rims. I think bronze would look awesome too.
Also, try "black chrome" for your emblems, will make it look 10x better than flat black in my opinion.

I was like you in that until I got my wheels I ran the steelies. You can with a little effort wax those flat black wheels producing a decent look to them. It would hold your grief until funds become available. I did just that along with the stock caps and was not displeased.

Or bronze hubcaps. =)
also interesting, but it's so hard to know what that would look like until actually on the car... I'm not sure bronze would look right on the black... also, it sems like most metal spray paints look cheap and fake (they will never look like the actual metal, just a fake matte version of it)

I don't see why not....cheap and I think you would be surprised. I still have mine and would not hesitate to put them back on if needed. I also think that if you did it you would rule out repainting them at least in black. Once done add some chrome lug nuts (Honda type comes to mind) and take a look.

i think steelies rock for a temp look until you get rims ! look ok to me on mine atleast..
IMO the yaris looks very different with the noob-caps off, the grey plastic makes it look very fisher price to me.

IMHO, black steel wheels make your nice Yaris look like a scrapper!
If you really must remove the wheel covers, maybe you could polish the steel wheels, install trim rings and a centre cap.

Steelies + trim rings + chrome nuts.
If you don't plan on getting wheel, I've done some painting on the hub cap in the past.
Maybe they might give you some good idea.

Yea I like Gideons and remember seeing them along time ago. Again wax to shine and check Advance, Auto Zone or the other big name here in NC for Honda lug nuts...they were like a 1.50 apiece. Honda parts wanted 6.50 apiece. Trim rings not to sure of.

Here's a few more before I installed my DFs:
The trim rings you can pick up at any auto store. I got two for free from an America's Tire Company. They sometimes keep old trim rings after people purchase new rims. The other two I bought for around $30 at Kragen's.
The centercaps are from NAPA, from the balkamp catalog #730-2411. They're very cheap, like $2 for a two pack or something I can't recall. They don't fit snugly though, so what I used was some sticky tape for emblems and outside automotive trim pieces and coated the inside with it to close the gap. They fit very well and stayed on for several hundred miles at high speed, until I swapped rims and tires.

Yes, trim rings and center caps is definitely the way to go in lieu of alloys. Nice set-up Gideon!

I think Toyota should take note here: Drop the plastic wheel covers, sell the Yaris with steel wheels, trim rings, centre caps, and chrome lugs, and offer factory alloy wheels as an option.

DO NOT ROCK TRIM RINGS ON SALTY ROADS
won't last a single day. seriously. not even a day.
well. maybe a day. if you cleaned them afterward. but not two.
I painted my hubcaps matte black. And then i put red lining around the edges. It looks pretty cool to me. Tell me what you think...

haha learned this the hard way now i have salt spots on my new trim rings, i swear though the salt was only on there from over night :iono:
they dont bad enough to remove though..... going to try to get some dust caps.
I went the other day but they only had two and one was dull as compared to it's shiny companion...

I painted my stock wheel covers flat black
i really like the hubcaps flat black. I didn't spend much on it, but the effect is amazing...unlike the stock, which looked soooo plastic. The lining gave a contrast to the all black wheel and tires.
Redhorse, i like the blue line too. Whiteghetto, post some pics of your baby! :)

Get some Simichrome Polish. If the salt hasn't burned all the way through the chrome plating, this will shine it up a treat. And you could probably shine up the dull one from the store too.

Mine look similar to Gideon's, minus the cap and trim ring. I took barbecue paint (1200 degree) flat black, then hit it with clear coat enamel. Not a real good paint job, just to cover up the rust star patterns that form. When I was looking at rims, I liked the black Motegi rims 16 inch is on my wish list, combined with Michelin pilot sport A/S 3's. I don't have pics, but if I remember, will do and upload by the weekend, if wanted. The cans were pretty cheap and layin around really, from an old purchase or 3. At the same time (I used the lift at work), I took that same bbq paint and hit the front of the exhaust, and took gloss black to the rest of the exhaust. I also bought 2 cans of 3M undercoating and sprayed the underside a bit better than the factory, not only for rust prevention, but also sound deadening. When I change out the speakers, I will also put dynamat or a facsimile thereof on the doors to quiet the road noise. But, painting the steel wheels is the cheapest route.
