I just put an intake in my yaris. it is a 2008 sedan. when i am driving my check engine light turns on, is there something i can do? i treid unplugging the negitive battery cable and it turns it off but afterwords when i drive for a minute the light turns back on. Also when i am driving the car shifts late.

sounds like you forgot to plug something in. double check your hoses and plugs

i checked over it everything seems to be fine. my dad said that i might need i different mass airflow sensor????

would it do that if there was a leak in the tube?

would it do that if there was a leak in the tube?

Yes... Also, is the intake tube the correct diameter?

the tube i put on is a three inch tube. the original tubeing was i think a two

thats the issue. the maf housing you used it too large.

Niko

so i should move to a two inch intake?

Tamago

would that cause a CEL so quickly?

Niko

? i dont understand?

mass airflow sensor works by "measuring" the velocity and temperature of air that passes past the sensor. if you change from a 2" to a 3" pipe the MAF measures X amount of air and is actually receiving 30% more air. not sure that it would cause a CEL that quickly that's why i asked if you'd wired everything correctly.

Since the tube is wider, I assume that the same amount of air that the engine consumes is moving slower past the MAF sensor. That may skew the temperature that is being sensed.

well i went to check like you said and i found that it was a number of air leaks that were causing the sensor to not read correctly. I used a sealent to fix the leaks and just got back from i two hour drive and the car ran great and no check engine light.

the tube size is wrong. ive tried doing the same thing on my car before i got the trd intake. the car would barley idle and it threw a CEL almost immediately.

If you get the CEl again you need to change to one of the many proven intakes out there.

AFE, AEM, Simota, Fujita, WR.

15 replies and nobody has yet asked "What CAI did you install?"

3 inch tube, I'm guessing ebay noname. With incorrect tube diameter you are definitely asking for a CEL to be thrown.

hes right yoda, dont laugh. i used a 3" housing to try and see if a 3" intake would work...it doesnt

I got an AFE intake and I am having the same problems I went over the hoses with a fine tooth comb, and the only thing I can think of is that the plastic elbow is leaking air, I'm pretty sure I put the MAF sensor on tight, even tho I had to get some extra washers to get it to stop wobbling on the housing. I'm going to add sealant to the hose and elbow, hopefully that solves the problem. Any suggestions on where I should be looking?

What CAI intake brand did you use. I never heard of any intake besides one on ebay that would require you to use sealant on it.

i got an AFE intake, I got it from a reputable parts store in Burbank, it came with all the parts and had all the emblems molded on the parts, it's legit... but for some reason it just didn't fit perfect.

bad maf would stall the car and not even run

check the tightness of the filter and tube

If there is a leak before to the MAF it can read that amount of air and correct the fuel still could cause a rich condition but i dont believe that would throw a code.. NOW if it's after the MAF you have un metered air reaching the engine causing a lean condition and that will pop a CEL quickly... Thus i'd be contacting AFE asking as to why the MAF housing is not providing a correct fit as well as making sure you have not damaged the fillament on the MAF by rigging it in the intake with washers they are kinda touchy oil from our hands can cause them to trip a light... just my two cents.

bad maf would stall the car and not even run

check the tightness of the filter and tube

so will an incorrect diameter MAF tube.

thanx, I'm going to give it another once over and hopefully it won't go off on the ride home.

I am still getting a CEL, but thanx to Garm I now know what the problem is(the bolts that came with the sensor are too long and the MAF is not sitting on the intake properly causing a leak) and will have it fixed A.S.A.P. Thank you again to all, for the help.

yup its the diameter..i ran into this problem.. 3 inch wont work at all..i believe its 2 1/4 inch is the stock... but i ran into someone that had bigger diameter..dont know how he did it..he said it was the distance between the maf and the filter.
