well try going to your local circuit city and see if they have anything left there
as you know, or may not know, all circuit cities are closing down, and so they have tons of things on sale.
here in vb just a couple weeks ago i believe i saw a tomtom gps for around 120
but im not sure what model it was

I have the garmin 760. It's great. Very pleased with it and my mom has the garmin 750. The only difference is bluetooth. I paid like $300, but I think they are less than $230 now. Try Amazon.

I actually don't need directions -- I need a GPS that just shows my locations, for hiking and tracking exercises. Recommendations? If this is a thread jack, lemme know I'll start a new one.

I think it's a crap shoot when it comes to maps and directions. Friend of mine is on his second Garmin. The latest one is the top end 860. Both, with updated maps, did not have my street which has existed since atleast the 1930s. Not only does it not recognize the name, the map itself shows Winston Churchill Blvd to the east of me, and Ninth Line to the west. Tenth Line, my street situated between those two, does not even appear. My middle-of-the-line TomTom has it, and even knows the heritage designation of my area.
BTW, got my TomTom via Airmiles redemption. Can't beat that for price.

^ how can they be pulling/loading two data sets? Wouldn't Garmin send all of its units the same data? Strange.
Maybe someone else can post some knowledge about how these things work.

I have a garmin that I switch out between my two planes but easy enough to say it is out of everybody's price range. I use a tom tom one in my car that was $149 it works fine as long as the road hasn't changed otherwise interesting things will happen.

Just got a garmin 760 from Amazon for 199$ shipped. Nice unit- gives speed limit for the road you are driving on and has settings for bicycles and hiking, bluetooth enabled, and has traffic and detour info

If you have a PDA you can get it all for free. There are plenty of torrents for that out there Garmin and TomTom.
For free maps check out these guys, they seem to know it all and constantly update.

I have my HTC 8125 with an External Bluetooth GPS attenna which is around $60 running tomtom with the US and Canada maps.
Total software/maps cost $0
Pm me for more details or just look around through that forum above.

I have had my Garmin Nuvi 200 for 1.5 years, I use it for my car, hiking, and bicycling. It is pretty accurate, and has never gotten me lost. It gets a pretty good signal anywhere, so long as it has a clear view of sky. I need to update the map though since I'm still using 2006. I paid 160 for this, it has calculator, convertor, image viewer. Very nice easy to read screen (I got the wide version), loud enough to hear. And can take a beating, I have dropped this countless times, and it still works perfect.

can't do this by just "figuring it out":
www.geocaching.com -- I need a portable GPS to play the game.

+1 for PDA (Windows Mobile) w/GPS software. I've used iGuidance for several years now it it hasn't steered me wrong yet.
Plus it's also my cellphone, has wifi, bluetooth and real GPS (not crappy cell phone tower triangulation.) Can load geocaching, topo maps, trail maps etc.
Much better than any standalone GPS out there IMHO.

I have a 7 inch Garmin StreetPilot 7200 in my new 2007 Yaris mounted behind the steering wheel. I like the large screen. But the $1,000 price tag a bit steep.
My second used Yaris has a 4.3 inch Garmin nuvi 255 WV. Some parts of the display is in small print and harder to read. I bought the nuvi at Best Buy for $230. The nuvi is portable, hold in the palm of the size. The nuvi has a built in rechargeable battery. Cover is available from Gramin. But local stores may have something that will work as good. I just put the Garmin in my purse and turn off the touch screen until needed. Traffic advisory is built in and free. But coverage area of the traffic advisory is limited. The nuvi shows speed limits on major roads but has pop up banner ads for Walgreens.

Ellen,
I also have the nuvi 255 and I've never seen a pop up add. Does your 255 ever have trouble finding satellites? Mine often thinks my car is pointing in the wrong direction and/or gives me terrible routes.

ok first off, to everyone who is complaining about the routes, are you going into the navigation settings AND/OR route preferences/avoidences?????
that will help dramatically.
second Garmins are good except for there new scheme of d/l maps either once or forever......
thirdly,
Garm, get the Garmin Nuvi 205 or Nuvi 200 (first is the more updated model of the 200)
it has pedestrian mode where you can take it hiking/off road don't know if it knows trails and such though. <<<I know it's a few months late but still :D

I've owned several GPS devices--Navman, Mio, Garmin. My current device is a TomTom One 140S. It is the most trustworthy GPS (in terms of routing) I've ever owned.

I took the GPS out today and it performed fairly well. Fiddling with the navigation settings let me turn off the expressway, toll roads, and other annoying routes. It still has trouble finding satellites. That's my only qualm at this point.

I have a nuvi 350 that I loaded topo maps on for Jeeping, I have been amazed at some of the trails that actually show up on it! I like the TTS function, so I get a "turn left on Alamo Street" instead of "turn left ahead," and I can recall only one instance where it routed me down a deadend road (to be fair, it appears it did continue through previously, as the road is on the other side of a dry creek where at one time there may have been a bridge). I use it for hiking and whereas it is not as easy to hang on to as a handheld GPS, it works well.
I also got a Garmin iQue 3600 from a bud but I can only get topo or baseline maps to work on it. Anyone know where I can detailed local maps to load onto it? Free works best for me!
Cheers! M2
