View Full Version : Ehh so
..... i got the NST UD pulley today and well tried to install it and omgwtfpwnz:cry: i cant get the bolt off. my impact gun is a 1/2 drive so i couldnt get a good grip
on it to cover the bolt with the socket. I manage some how to get it in a little slanted and a little grip. That didnt work. I am working with a 250 tq electric gun:confused:. Any suggestions???
By the way thats the only gun i could get.

put the car in gear, and get a breaker bar

^+1....That's how I'm going to get 'er done on Monday at Microimage.
$10 breaker bar at harbor freight can "fix" anything.

You should be able to use a short extension for the impact if you can't get it to fit directly on the bolt. Putting the car in gear and using a breaker bar is a pretty abusive way to do it (if that even works). There's another way to do it with a breaker bar, but I don't think anyone who knows wants to give up the secret due to liability reasons.

insane mechanics when I got mine installed could not loosen it by hand either... so one guy held on the breaker bar real strong while the other cranked the engine for a split second... Worked like a charm! Though be careful if you try this, you probably don't want to clean up pieces of shredded appendages from your engine bay...

I was able to get it loose with just a breaker bar and a rubber strap wrench... cranking the engine with the breaker bar on the the nut is insanely dangerous... you could hurt yourself and/or the car.. I would NOT recommend it...

In case you're wondering I wrapped the strap wrench around the pulley, and braced it against the chassis so I didn't have to hold it, and just cranked real hard on the breaker bar... If you think you might have problems with that, get a pipe to go over the end to lengthen it so you can get more leverage... as Archimedes said, “Give me a lever long enough, and a prop strong enough, I can single-handed move the world.”

I should have known someone out there knew an even worse way to do it.

heh notice he never said it was a good way are necessarily recommended it. You can get a tire back on the rim by spraying combustibles inside it then lighting a match, but why the hell would you actually try it?
i gonna see if i can get an extension for the gun when i get off work and try it one more time if not then i see if i can find a breaker bar somewhere...

TOUGEghost,
You're telling me putting the car in gear and applying the brakes (to keep the engine from spinning), and then using a 30" long breaker bar with a fully seated socket is abusive?
Explain.
got some more tools gonna give it another try

Were all behind you Yoda:smile:
ok i got the bolt off not too bad just needed an extender and some back bone... now new prob i put the alternator bact to the positioned i marked it at but the belt still feels loose
so i tried making it a little tighter and started the engine....it squeals really loud help me plz -_-'
so i put it in the stock position again turned the car on and you kno what only the pulley spins:iono: its just spining there with the belt on it.
i am thinking there is a sweet spot somewhere

sounds like the belt isn't tight enough... if its tight, the belt pretty much HAS to move with the pulley.
i got it to move now but when i push the pedal it sequels a little.

Check the belt deflection at the midpoint between the crank and the alt pulleys. The deflection on a belt used more than 5 min. is 11-13mm (assuming you're using the old belt). The service manual in the DIY section has the specs and a diagram.
Too much belt tension can kill the water pump bearing.
ok got int good but now i have that red battery light. the books says that means its have problems charging...

Is the alternator spinning?
yes it is. do i need to make it tighter just a bit?

What is the deflection of the belt right now (engine off).?
its 12mm then i again i am using a ruler. there seems to be a very very very small point where it will not sequel and have the battery light off the best i got was a little sequel with the battery light off. you thing driving it a bit will make it go away?
well i go the sequel sound to go away on start up and the battery light but when you give it some gas it sequels

Is it a new belt, or the old one. Chances are that driving it will make the noise go away after a little while it it's a new belt.

I didn't even mark the original place of the alternator. Just moved it so the belt was tight and good to go!

the alternator needs to be moved past where it was before you installed the pulley... the pulley is smaller so there's more slack on the belt mine moved about an inch

It's probably your shifting.

If you haven't yet, change the trans fluid to Redline MT-90, or other GL-4 fluid. You'll need 2 bottles.
You'd be amazed at how big a difference this stuff makes!
its a manual tho doesnt just use the engine oil...?
jkuchta
02-23-2009, 09:20 PM
No, the transmission uses its own fluid. A GL-4 spec 75W-90 weight oil like Redline MT-90 is perfect. You'll need 2 quarts for a complete fill.
ok so the dealer ordered a new trans for me yea. o also about the pulley... i notice that my mpg has also increased by 2 and this was while i was WOT 80%. My mpg has never been higher ever even when i baby it. i current sit at 32 mpg WOT 80% of the time total city driving. I love this dang thing
