I'm going to buy an external hard disk drive....

which of these two, is the better option?

WD 1tb Elements color=Black (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136321)

-OR-

Fantom Drives 1tb GreenDrive color=Silver (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822204079)

I looked at the reviews and

I want a drive that I will be able to move my 150+ gigs (right now) and dump it to the drive in one move. then do that everytime i 'refill' the internals.

My concern is that I never hear of people 'storing' an external drive. I want to take all of our important documents and make a digital copy of them put them on the drive as well and then store it... I want to know how well they hold up after not being used for 'years at a time'

or is that not feasible?

IMO as long as you keep it in a safe place away from risk of shock it should be fine

They both have solid reviews, WD has always been good to me, never had a bad hd from them, i would say either or is a safe bet, just preference at this point.

WD has the rep for being reliable, I've never heard of a stuffed hdd with them.

WD has been doing great. But all manufacturers have up and downs.

Some have said nothing is safer than a HD stored in a safe place for long term storage. But just beware that all HD do error out on certain bits once in a while. When that happens, the data is lost. So, there isn't a truly SAFE place to store all your data; there are just some ways of doing it safer than the other way.

My WD external drive crashed a while ago. Funny thing is, it was DOA when I bought it and this one was the replacement unit.

Now I'm going for Samsung drives. And improving my backup habits.

I'll definitely recommend the WD over the Phantom. It's slimmer and overall is a great brand for external hard drives. Something you can rely on it.
