Hi everyone,
I've just bought a 2003 1.0 Yaris. Is there anything that will prevent me from accidentally shifting into reverse when I'm driving? Im worried because Ive only just passed my test and the reverese gear is under fifth gear and I dont have to press a button to get into reverse.

Not really. Just take it easy until you get used to it-- then it'll be like riding a bike. Oh, just don't go speed racer/fast and furious thinking you have a 6 speed manual and you'll be fine.

So what will happen if I do it by accident?

you cannot shift directly from 5th to reverse. you MUST pass back into neutral before reverse will engage
don't worry, you'll be fine

wow, i'm surprised 3/4 of the people on this thread did not that you cannot directly go into reverse from 5th (or from any gear at all)
What if you have a automatic, will you be able to shift back to reverse while driving?
I know that would be totally stupid to do so and no one should attempt, but just thought to ask.

Just memorize the position of the gears and try to remember that after 5th , that's as fast as the car's going to go! ;)
Seriously, it takes a little bit of work to go into reverse. You shouldn't have to force to get the car back in 4th.

Yeah it's like they said, If you shift to R while moving forward, you will hear a loud crank noise, at this point you should freak out and let go of the shift knob, the box should spit the gear the neutral, then place it in the correct gear. The shift box is designed to spit you to neutral when a gear isn't properly engaged. It has happened to me when I don't pull the stick all the way then I rev and go no where. Re-clutch and engage the correct gear and you're off!

let my mini cooper S (6 speed MT) friend drive my car once. Did, tried, done. It won't go in "6th" lol

tried that in a chevy uplander. It felt like the transmission was about to fall off.. tires would squeak like if you brake enough to lock the wheels (no abs). Tried it once... will never do it again, now i know what it is. please, don't do it on your automatic yaris. Wait untill the car is still before you put it in reverse.
there is really no excuse to mistakenly shift into reverse on any automatic cars.

LOL.. good ole chevy. The Yaris will stay in neutral if you shift into reverse on the freeway in an automatic.

I used to do that every time I had to drive someone else's cars. Clutch always feels a little different from one car to the next.
Speaking of which, I think I'm starting to get used to the clutch on my Yaris, finally. Pfewww, about time, too! It looks like the key to shifting smoothly in low gears with that car is to give it a little more gas, otherwise it chokes. :iono:

Well, my brother did this to my dads car when he was young and stupid. 55 mph, slammed into reverse.
My dad was furious but never found out why the reverse gear didn't didn't work anymore.

Well mine does it, if the shifter doesn't fall into gear right, the spring puts it back to neutral. Of course not unless you keep pushing it into gear, hence I said let go.

you said the box spits the car to neutral then puts itself into gear..
probably just poor wording on your part but it made it sound like the gearbox automatically put itself back into gear :iono::laugh:

Ah I see should have put a period there! Yeah it was more like the next step. After that happens re-clutch and (YOU) place it in the correct gear.
