triple blinker?

so the volkswagen rabbit, not sure about the others, has something where you tap the turn signal lever once and it flashes the signal 3 times. is there a way to do that on the yaris, or is it programmed into the ecu of the vw? i tried calling the vw dealership here, but even no one there can give me a definitive answer :iono:

It'd be programmed into a tiny little rom chip somewhere near the steering wheel i'd bet.... I'm sure you could find some way to make your own.... but without the knowledge of how the yaris sends the signals for the flashers it'd be hard to figure out. If its just a stupid contact + relay type setup.. then yeah... you could probably make a button that went to some relays that could do the same thing, but you'd have to do it for both the left & the right.

I have no clue how the signal on the car is wired up tho... never cared to look and figure it out.

There is a company out there that sells these boxes for VAG cars that aren't equiped with them, im sure if you wanted to do it it's possible

yeah the chryslers have this 'feature' too...personally i think it's snobbish as how abrupt three blinks of the light is.. like you're coming over into the lane whether I like it or not.....

after doing a little more reading/researching, it's more than just a simple relay fix. it's programmed somewhere up in there.. a no go. thanks for the info.

but 9 times out of 10, i'm not cutting anyone off, so i don't know how snobbish it can be. highway driving here is way different than that in orlando! if changing lanes requires more caution, of course i'm going to let it go more than a few times. but here, there's more than enough room to have it flash only three times and be in the next lane by the time they're finished.

I like the triple blinker function, sometimes it's easy to press the stalk just not long enough that the guy behind you does not see the blink. BMWs also do this, and it's just efficient in a German way, can't think of any better way to describe it :laugh:

1 way to get them to blink fast and BOTH stil work... but LED bulbs for them.. since they draw lower energy they cause the car to think the bulbs out and it blinks fast vala!

there's no relay we could put in like on old american cars?

I'd have to take a closer look at the electrical wiring diagram, I am not sure where the actual timing is coming from. But seeing the rest of this car, it's most likely an electronic device...

There are two ways that I see of doing this:

1. Modify the flasher module circuitry (or add a microcontroller on top of it that looks for a quick close then open, and then does a tripple flash for you). Doable, but a bit of work.

2. Add two time delay relays (TDRs) in line with the flasher switches (one for left and one for right). TDRs come as either delay on make (DOM) or delay on break (DOB). In this case you'd want a DOB. The relay coil would be wired to the flasher switch. The contacts would be wired to the harness side. When you press and release the flasher switch it would continue to flash for the period which the DOB relay is set for (in this case a number of seconds, rather than a number of flashes).

The nice thing about this method is you can set the DOB for something like 3 to 5 seconds rather than just a quick tripple flash, so it would be more visible, but still have the same effect.

This second method would mean that you would also have the delay when you latch the turn signal, but that wouldn't really be an issue.
