So I ended up getting the new headlight stalk with fog light control on it and something just isn't right. I have rechecked everything numerous times and for some reason the fog lights only turn on when the high beams are switched on. The fog lights are installed, with one wire to a ground, and the other into the proper pin in the fuse box under the hood. An OEM relay was also installed under the dash, and the new stalk was installed. Any suggestions why this would be happening?

Did you already have the fogs wired, and then added the new stalk? This is what the wiring is supposed to look like when using the fog light switch on the stalk:

I don't know if these would be the case, but my car came with a DRL module and when I disconnected it my fogs stopped working. If you've disconnected yours you might want to try reconnecting it and see if changes it.
Hope this was helpful.

have you disabled your daytime running lights.
that sounds like the problem to me .

DRL's have never been touched. I'm in the process of deciphering that wiring schematic. As far as wiring, there really wasn't much, just the ground and and the wire to the fuse box under hood...

I'm assuming that the high beam and low beam wires need to be switched in the plug that goes into the stalk?

If you swap hu and hl then high and low functionality will be reversed. Did the new stalk replace the existing and the factory connector plugged back in?

Yup, ordered it from my local dealer, fit perfect, and the plug went right in. That's why I'm so confused...

Dealer price is like $96.17 USD, fortunately I had gotten a coupon in the mail a day before it arrived.

OK - So, new OEM plug and play stalk. Did you wire up the fogs, or were they already in and wired to a separate switch?

Installed the fogs myself. From the fogs there is a ground wire which I grounded by the driver side headlight, and another wire that I wired into the plug in the fuse box under the hood. Plugged the Toyota relay under the dash. Then installed the stalk and plugged in the harness.

So, the only wires you actually had to connect were the ground and the fuse box connection. In that case double check the connection point in the fuse box to make sure that you're in the right position in the connector.

okay the problem is your fogs are working in reverse to factory ,
the most likely problem is the relay is switching in reverse.
Talk to Garm at Microimage i sent him some relays and
wire set up for fog lights a week ago .

Where did you tie to in the fuse panel?
What is the part number on the relay (1NZ might be on to something with the relay being a NO vs NC or vise versa)?
You plugged the Toyota relay into the open spot in the iside fuse panel right (It's not an aftermarket fog set that includes an inline relay correct)?

I've tried 2 different relays now, one is a Tyco and one is Toyota. I'm still hoping it has something to do with the relay. It really can't be anything else, unless the stalk is bad (doubt it). I'll post pics and p/ns of the relays tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Could I ask: which Yaris are you driving? I bought my 07 hatch from a dealer who has flatly refused to help me outfit it with fog lights.
If there is an OEM light stalk with a switch for fog lights that fits my column, I'd like to know what part number to order.
Thanks!

The part number for the stalk switch is 84140-52150 (06-08 hatch back) Price $96.17 list but can be bought at Sparks Toyota for $77.00
or if you have a 09 hatch back it is 84140-52151 not sure what the differrance is curently looking into it.
So be careful before you order one

Well the headlamp stalk for the 06-08 Yaris (in Australia), has a twistable switch for 'rear fogs'.. while my 09 Yaris does not? This is comparing across the YRS grade we have in Australia.
Here we go:
The stalk in question:

and both stalks:

Back on track here, the P/N for the relay is: 90987-02012...

That part number is listed for many other cars for various purposes, but not for the Yaris. The Yaris fog light relay part number is 90987-02027.
I am not sure what the difference is between the two, but I would check both with an ohm meter to see how they compare.
Looking at the bottom of the relay the terminals are arranged like this:
1 2
| |
5-
3-
On the correct fog light relay:
1 to 2 is the coil and should read somewhere around 100ohms
3 to 5 are the contacts and should be open
1 to 3 and 1 to 5 should be open
2 to 3 and 2 to 5 should also be open

Thanks CTScott, in one of the other DIY guides it says to use part number: 90080-87026. Do you know anything about that one?
1NZYaris1
03-11-2009, 05:21 AM
The differance between the 2 relays is 1 is n/o normally open
the other n/c normally closed , this is the postion the relay sits before being activated ie n/o relay turn on your switch closes relay turning on lights
the relay you have installed at the moment is n/c so it will only turn your
lights on when it is receiving the signal from hi beam , which is the signal
that normally turns them off
if you need the correct relay talk to Gram at microimage as he has a few in stock .
Also the part number 90080-87026 is the only part number that returns as a part for toyota cost $66.67
but on sale at Sparks for $48.00+p&p
Or Garm can supply for about half that again.

Thanks for the clarification on the relay specs 1NZ.
Also, 90080-87026 and 90987-02027 are the same part. Toyota revised the part number from the former to the latter.

I bought this relay a loooong time ago when the other thread was still around (with the DIY fog lights OEM style).
Was the relay the issue? If so, I will order the correct PN. For reference, I have the Denso relay 90987-02012.

I have tried 3-5 different relays, so I'm pretty sure it isn't a relay issue. Still trying to get to the bottom of it.
