I live in a hilly area. Some 4 cyl cars get great gas milage in flat areas but when you put them in the hills the gas milage gets as bad as a V8.

Other cars get almost the same gas milage on the flats and the hills.

Where does the Yaris rate as far as hills and gas milage ?

Depends how you drive... if you downshift and mash the pedal to race up the hill, then race down again then sure, you'll see some pretty bad mileage... but if you moderate the load on the engine on the way up, and then ride the engine on the way down (the ECU cuts off fuel supply in the case as it is not needed, aka DFCO, there's a whole topic about it here :wink:), you can still see some great numbers

I live in a very hilly area of Wisconsin and my mileage usually wavers around 30mpg for city driving...and i'm not the most conservative driver :)

if you tried, i'm thinking you could get better mileage than what i'm getting, it kind of depends on how patient you're willing to be.

I found a dealer with a silver hatchback with the 15" steelies and rear window defrost package for $12,300 including destination. I am thinking I should jump on this deal.

I love my old 93 Civic but Honda just doesn't make a 2200 lb 2-door anymore. I think I could grow to love the Yaris.

Yes its a new 5spd '09. Real close to jumping on it. The dealer is about an hour away but they can deliver it. I'll probably keep my Civic to restore it one day.

what kind of mileage do you get with the civic? what engine?

The civic is an EX with the 1.6L. I get exactly 30 mpg. My commute is hills for 8 miles then flat interstate for the last 8 miles. I don't drive fast, but I don't slow down for curves, I push my car's handling to its limits :smile:

The Civic is in need of bearings, shocks, springs, clutch, and the worst part all new bushings. Too big a project for my old age.

I drive on a lot of hills, and have never gotten below 30 mpg(probably average around 35-36). I'd say my driving is ~40% hilly city/30% flat city/30% flat highway.

Hills? Google any part of BC and watch the altimeter go nuts, those are hills! We have mountains as well, one of the kids lives 2 ranges over, two more 2 ranges the other way. 5500' passes are the easy route. What does this have to do with mileage?

Our sedan runs in the 50mpgUS range on trips, 40-odd locally, but this has to do with driving style: never pull below 2000, never go over 4000, never floor it, yet I have no problem keeping up with traffic. I always gear down rather than apply full throttle to maintain speed up a hill. The car is peppy, and I enjoy its performance, but it has been some years since I lost the urge to race...

Sounds like a good deal, no way can you go wrong.

I've driven in the hills of Belgium and Germany and my average mileage 47 MPG.
But i have to admit that i tried to be the first going uphill and i've driven 122 MPH for a few minutes in Germany and 87 MPH average in Germany.

regal, what part of PA are you in? My folks are around York, have a 5spd Yaris, and get 36mpg. I know the biggest problem with hills there (especially around Pitt) is the traffic lights 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of the way up the hill, as well as all the bends, so you can't just accelerate smoothly up the hill, you're always braking and accelerating. A long low grade hill is a lot different than a curvy start/stop city hill. Keep that in mind when you buy.

I'm in York too. I picked up the new Yaris today, it was a good deal at $11.7k w/ convenience package couldn't let it get away. The white color is kinda utilitarian but it will grow on me and white is easy to repair if I hit a deer or something. Really like the car and thanks for answering all my questions.

Like I said on your other thread, 11.7K is a GREAT price. White is OK, gets dirty but so does black. Enjoy your car! :thumbsup:
