A friend of mine has a 2007 Toyota Yaris Sedan. The OEM tire size is 175/65x14 on a 5" width wheel.
My recommendation is to upgrade to 185/60x14 for a better selection of performance-oriented "all season" rubber. I'm thinking Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position. Since I'm not that familiar with the Yaris, what do you guys think?
Thanks.

185/60/14's are too short.

What size do you recommend, keeping in mind the narrow wheel width?

if he wants a little better performance, i would recommend going up to a larger wheel... downside is that with a larger wheel, there will be more unsprung weight, and your gas mileage will take at least a small hit...
side note, after looking up on the tire sizes list compared with a tire sizing calculator, his best bet for a 14 inch wheel would be a 195/60/14
personally, i went up to a 17 inch wheel from OEM, with a 205/40/17 tire(mine is off by 0.65 MPH at 30 on my speedo), but did lose a couple MPG... car handles nice now... but there are options in between for both a 15(185/55/15, off by 0.07 @30) and a 16 inch wheel(205/45/16, off by 0.4 @ 30)...

With a 5" wheel, you can run up to a 195mm tyre. Yes, some have installed 205's on the OEM steel wheels, but that's a bit tight... but doable.
This is from the Official Yaris Wheel and Tire guide: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5021
175/65/14 = 23.0
185/65/14 = 23.5
195/65/14 = 24.0
195/60/14 = 23.2
205/60/14 = 23.7
215/60/14 = 24.2

Thanks.
My only concern is that I can't find a tire manufacturer that recommends installing a 195/60x14 tire on a 5" width wheel. The all seem to say 5.5"-7.0".

Recommended wheel width for 205mm tyres is 5.5-7.0.
For 195mm tyres, recommended wheel width is 5.0-7.0.
Order your tyres on-line and save some money, then bring them to a garage (Walmart) for installation.

14" tires are shorter than the cars that come w/ 15's
i run 185-60-14 fuzion hri's in summer and i love 'em....good treadwear, cheap to buy, and really good wet and dry traction

why not source some 15" steelies used, they are cheap, and then you can run the bigger tire.
Edit: nvm, just saw silver_echo's post above
